Giants of Jazz - Dizzy Gillespie in Concert

This rarely seen live concert of famed Jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993) was recorded in 1985 at Long Beach (CA) City College. Besides Mr. Gillespie personal include: Lanny Hartley-piano, Sherman Ferguson-Drums, Harold Land-Saxophone, Frank Potenza-guitar, Leroy Vinnegar-bass. Dr. George Shaw, Music Director.

I am honored to have been on the L.B.C.C. Media Services TV crew for the taping of this concert. I was Camera #2 and I also edited the whole concert... What a great time it was, learning my craft at LBCC!!! If you have this concert on DVD, I would love to get a copy. Thank you!

David, nice camera work on the video. The U-Matic tape masters were in poor shape and the college was getting ready to toss them. My company acquired them and through a process of baking and using a high end U-matic VCR we were able to get one last play out of most of them. I don't have any DVDs of these shows but if you have the free MacX KZbin downloader (or a PC equivalent) you can download the concert. Incidentally, I was an LBCC student about a decade earlier.

@@zebraradio1610 Thank you for your response and compliment, Zebra! Yea, I remember the Director telling me: "don't redo the edits, if possible, as it will strip the magnetic tape!" As a perfectionist, it was hard to follow that rule! :-) Anyway, thanks for the tip on downloading the concert from your page with MacX KZbin. Since I am on the subject of concerts... I also worked on the Bill Watrous Concert and The Making of the LBCC Studio Singers with Tom Dustman as Choir Director... and a few I really can't think of at the moment. Anyway, if you have Bill Watrous, it would be great to see it... Thank you so much!

We didn't see any tapes labeled 'Bill Watrous Concert.' Too bad, that would have been a great concert to show. I'm sure the tape is long gone. We do have Ronnie Laws and Patrice Rushen concerts and a portion of a David Sanborn concert. Not sure if I'll ever upload those.
