If you really want to hear that guitar come alive go ahead and turn the Deluxe Reverb up to about 8 and then back the guitar's volume down to about 6 or 7. Turn the amp up louder then you'd normally play and control the level with the guitar. Try playing quiet with the amp almost all the way up. Thank you for the review, a big thanks to Gibson and your Gibson Guy.

When you're paying $6700 for a guitar there shouldn't be a single QC issue regardless of how small an issue one thinks it is. I always feel that many Gibson fans give a pass on small flaws regardless of price. There are some companies out there producing far less expensive guitars with small QC issues I could forgive...I'd call myself a Gibson fan too, but I just can't pay those prices anymore for what they let out the door to customers.

@JokersWild70

Agreed. They've had QC issues for decades, and it's ridiculous. Although I love Les Pauls and SGs, Gibson has no business being in business. Rarely do these issues crop up with Fender and PRS. And yes, we do accept mediocrity from them but we sure as hell shouldn't.

Never buy new. If you're paying new prices then I can agree. But like a new car, the minute it's "yours" it looses 30% (just a guess), but if you go for used, and you can buy it at a fair price you can always recoup your investment. Never, buy new That's my mantra.🙂

A small observation - the Vibrola bar touches the body WITHOUT STRINGS, just like the 355-like tailpiece touches the deck without strings. A pull of the strings approximately 80 kgf over the bridge raises the bar to a sufficient height to float. That's why any experiment with string caliber - ignoring the manufacturer's recommendations - will result in retuning the tremolo every time.

IMO the sideways vibrato and Maestro Vibrola SG Standards and Customs are the sexiest looking solid body guitars ever. The ivory white is lovely but Pelham Blue takes it into the ionosphere. Saw an original Pelham Blue Custom with the sideways vibrato in the local music store in '73 and fell in love, and I am a bass player. Price was $575. It was the most expensive guitar. In the shop. Crazy money for an ''old'' guitar in those days!

@darwinsaye
@darwinsaye 3 жыл бұрын
Love Sister Rosetta, but I'm pretty sure her SG was just a straight off the shelf guitar, so there is nothing to define it as a "signature model". You could call the SG in Trogly's video a "Sister Rosetta Tharpe model", but all that would mean is that it would just cost more money for the name, but have no actual differences to justify a higher price.

I like the finish on the back of the truss rod cover, I doubt they would match it to the guitar just to be hidden unless the black plastic on the front is inlaid or pressed on top and flared to make the screws flush, so is the cover reversible?

I know we’re running out of time but if at all possible can you please do a 2021 Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White? I just bought one a couple weeks ago & having also purchased two 50’s neck Standards over the last 12 months the Custom is hands down the single best quality & highest attention to detail I have personally ever seen in the 34yrs I’ve been playing guitar & 25yrs I’ve been buying Gibsons (I’ve only ever once bought a non-Gibson, it was a Fender Strat & I sold it after maybe a year). It is hands down what has made Gibson a Gibson so I would love to see whether that type of quality extends across all of the 2021 run, specifically Alpine White or if I just got really really lucky. In part my curiosity is peaked specifically because I visited the Gibson Garage about a month ago & they had one hanging in the window with some major flaws. I believe because of it being in the window the fretboard had shrunk and pulled away from the neck so there was a significant “shelf” on the neck to the fretboard along with some other flaws that after receiving mine from AMS made me curious as to whether that really had been a result of where it’s displayed or if the QC is just all over the place as it sorta appears to be with regular production models. I am absolutely IN LOVE with my new Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White and it would be awesome if you could do a video on the 2021 Alpine White run, maybe talk about why Alpine White seems to be so difficult to get a hold of (it took me 25yrs to buy one. I went to buy one in 2001 ended up with just a plain Ebony one). Much appreciated!

Under the KISS (the band) method, it would only sell more guitars if people got the idea to break their own guitars. That's because those guitars either didn't pass QC (for Gibson QC, those guitars were probably closer to fire wood than guitars) or were warranty returns.

Then there's the '61 White Lp/SG Custom that Steve Marriott sold to Grand Funk's Mark Farner for $200 after the 'Pie opened for GF at Shea Stadium in '71. Thank you for reviewing this guitar FINALLY Trogly!! To me the Gibson SG Custom is like the king of the SGs, the one that started it all, such a beautiful guitar in my opinion. Had a hardtail one I bought brand new back in 1998 (for around $1,700 brand new) but eventually sold it when I needed the money and always regretted it. (Same with my midnight blue SG Supreme I used to have ugghgh!) Soooo when I saw these were coming out all these years later I am tempted! Another white SG Custom is on my bucket list and when they reintroduced it with the sideways vibrola 1961 model, even more tempting! Is it a lot of money? Yes definitely. Is the sideways vibrola the best design? No. I've seen how they can go out of tune with just one or two pulls but I think that sideways vibrola unit looks cool as hell with that big transformer looking plate/cover. I'm not a big trem user anyway but you could use it for some warbles and shimmers here and there if you want. I've heard theyre more reliable if the guitar is set up properly. But what's not to like here? Pretty off white color, ebony fretboard, custom appointments like headstock binding and big block inlays, gold hardware etc... And I love the quacky out of phase sound when the bridge and middle pickups are both on. SGs are my fave guitars, still have my 94' Standard (heritage cherry) I bought brand new and a faded Pelham Blue Special with P-90s which I really dig too. Really tempted to get one of these, what say ye' all? (You only live once right?) .

Wesley Alan you're welcome too. Yeah I really dig that sideways vibrola. It'd be hard between that and the maestro with the walrus tooth handle. I think those look really sharp as well but I have an Epiphone Firebird 7 with one of those. So if I do spring for one of these SG customs I think this is the one I would buy because they've never reissued it before with it (sideways vibrola). It was a unique design but as we know very short-lived. I've heard some guys say that if they're set up properly they're actually not bad and won't throw the guitar out of tune every time you use it. I'm not a big regular trem user anyway and have another guitar with a Bigsby on it that is pretty versatile so I'm covered in that department.

It looks really nice and I have never seen one before and didn’t know to be on the lookout for one. I have a Godin twelve string and a Giannini also, a double neck SG or 1275 would be awesome too, but I had no idea that they made 12 string Les Paul’s, I would really like to play on one now. I still need to round out my SG collection as well, one of these would be an excellent addition, however, I would prefer the Vibrola tremolo system, it has less moving parts, and is easier to maintain, it’s also easier to restring. Thank you for posting these videos Austin! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨

I don't see how putting something that looks like an unrolled soup can from bridge to button, covering a third of the lower bout is a visual enhancement.

I was wondering if you’d be willing to review one pre- 1970 vintage Gibson per year, I know it’s not always your cup o tea, but I know I’d love to hear your thoughts on some of em.

They should give it to you. You make them a commercial everyday. You put in more work than their whole marketing department. (If they even have one) lol. For six grand I want my nut cut as best as physically possible and perfect paint.

Hopefully someday you do VOS 64 Or Murphy 64. Cheers! The ummm playing demo with clean was good - when we get to the distorted it always seems to go umm what do you say - DARK.

Wow I didn’t know the lever rested on the body finish like that. Man, I kept 4 new les paul standards that are 2019 and 2020s; I was bummed that they only put that felt padding under the pickgaurd screw for 2 out of 4 of them so 2 have a visible ding/scratch from the screw if you take the pickgaurd off.This is one of the things they need to really address because they’ve known about it; you even mentioned it two years ago in a review of a 60s standard.

I'm glad they didn't send me one of those for free , I would have parted it out ! By the way Gibson , I'm still waiting for my Custom Shop 58 reissue ,in Lemon Tea ( Earl Grey tea of course ) burst ( I'm English didn't want the coffee coloured one !) . Nice choice of a bit of Led Zep to open the test .
