My 2018 Les Paul traditional has the exact same covers and made the same noise when I touched the plastic. Plastic! Your method fixed it! Thanks!!!!! My guitar also has several other problems that I've never seen on any guitar before in my entire life. Not even on a $100 guitar. I got it used online for pretty cheap price, but when I got it, I realized why it was so cheap. One side of the headstock, the edge of the open book was sanded a little too much at the factory and is a bit thinner than the other side. 3 nibs were filed wrong and they don't even match with the frets. Most of the nibs are not flush with the frets so the high E string catches the frets when I do pull offs. Only gibson would invent something that inhibits a technique, but looks so good! The fretboard right after the first fret is sanded down too much on one side and there's a quite noticeable depression. Nevermind the sanding marks and file marks on the fretboard. The neck binding is caved in a little, so it doesn't feel flush with the neck. There's also a tiny hole on the fret board that has been filled in with wood filler. They tried to match the color best they could, but I can definitely tell it's wood filler. This is my only 2nd les paul that I've owned in my life and my other one was stamped "2" which was a factory second. Gibson used to do that with their not so perfect guitars. That "2" guitar, I could not find any flaw at all. I looked all the time in the 2 years that I owned it, and I could not find a single flaw. Gibson definitely needs to label factory seconds again. But this 2018 les paul is not a factory second, but a redo. This guitar never should've left the factory. No wonder why they went bankrupt.

I purchased a 2016 LP Traditional that did the same thing. It had other issues/flaws so it was exchanged. The replacement ALSO did the same thing, so its something that’s originating in the factory in my opinion. In my case it wasn’t just the covers or screws.. literally the entire rear surface of the body, the sides near the binding, strap buttons... all produced audible static when touched, rubbed or casually grazed, etc, and seemingly louder and more pronounced than what I’m hearing in your video, Dave. The plastic covers on both were the same as this one as well. I replaced them with the normal flat non textured version. Also shielded and grounded out everything, included pup cavities, switch cavity, knob cavity, and plates themselves. For what it’s worth, there are threads on some LP forums I’d read then (this was 2016 upon discovering the problem) that mentioned the possibility of the nitro sprayed on the guitar having some effect or impact on the severity of the issue. I wasn’t aware of this when I read it, but apparently guitar bodies can be electrically charged to help when spraying lacquers and such? Helps adhesion as the paint is electrically attracted to the surface being painted? I honestly don’t know. Perhaps that’s a piece of the puzzle, especially if it’s a brand new or recently built guitar.

Try experimenting with dryer sheets. Run one lightly over the back and neck of the guitar, and stuff one inside the control cavity so that it's touching the ground wire and/or metal case of the pot(s).

This helped me figure out a similar problem on my Epiphone Les Paul. I had a new switchcraft switch and CTS pots installed, and it was buzzing like crazy. Turned out there was no ground between the switch cavity and the rest, so a bit of ground wire was all that was needed. Quiet as a whisper now, even on full gain / master volume!

Yesterday I received a brand new Les Paul Standard 50's and it does the exact same thing. I'm glad I follow you Dave because now I know how to solve it. I was going to just put the copper tape on the backs of my (correct plastic) covers. Knowing that I need to put the tape down in contact with the components as well as bring it up to the screws is what makes the difference. Now, don't get me started on the crappy nut work on this guitar. Unbelievably bad!

Thanks for this. I have a Peter Frampton LP Signature, the most expensive guitar I ever bought, and it has always had 'static' handling noise on the strings - I have lots of other guitars included a 76 LP and never had this problem before. I know nothing of guitars' innards but having seen this I'll at least check out what's under those covers and maybe put shielding on them.

I’ve got a 2018 Paul Standard that develops a ton of static when I glide my fingertips along the pickguard. It was driving me nuts, so I applied a piece of clear surgical tape along the area my fingers touch, and no more static. Not an elegant fix, but it was cheap, and it works.

My 2016 SG has that pebble finish cover on it but has shielding on the inside surface. I've always heard that polishing the lacquer at the factory can cause a static build up on the whole guitar. My remedy is the spray "Static Guard" onto a rag then wipe down the guitar with it, works for me.

Dealing with it on my Les Paul. Base model below a Studio. Been doing it past several years and playing 3 other electric guitars I’ve purchased in the last year I finally realized it was as much an issue as it is. Annoys me. My Les Paul has same plastic covers. I use to have a better Les Paul decades ago so I know exactly the difference you speak of. It’s just a production company looking for cheaper ways to build a product to keep consumer cost low and higher profit margin. My guitar came to me without top correctly clear coated. 2 dry shot spots. Can see it in picture Gibson sent to me when It was brand new. Still have that pic. I liked the look though. I’ve rubbed away all clear coat and stain on corner where my forearm rests all the way to original bare wood. I love the look even more. A guitar with a worn out finish has many stories to tell.

I have bought over a dozen Gibson guitars in the last ten years. Every single one of them had static problems. I live in Colorado where there is a very dry climate. I came to the conclusion that when I buy a Gibson guitar I have to shield the cavities inside of it. I know that Gibson should do this themselves, especially with what they cost! The only reason I keep buying them is because I love them. They are the coolest guitars on the planet and I will always love my Les Pauls and SG’s.

Had this very same problem on a Gibson SG not too long ago. The cavity cover WAS the problem, though it didn't have the same textured finish. For whatever reason (cost?) They used a different kind of plastic for the cover. It had a different feel when handled. When I called Gibson support ....Yes! ..."dryer sheets" and or a humidifier was suggested. WTF? I shielded the stock one, but out of curiosity, I cut another out of some older standard pickguard material sheet, and even unsheilded, there was not the static noise. You'd think with something so simple, and probably not all that cost effective, they'd just go back to the good material.

I'm late to the Party. I have a few Gibson guitars that do the static thing.. I found it to be that the plush Fabric of the case was charging the plastic on the guitar causing the static sound. Kinda like when you walk on some carpets and the zap someone with your finger. A few dryer Anti static sheets in the case really helps also just rubbing the plastic with the dryer sheets works. It may wear off of the plastic from use but a box is cheap enough to last a year or 2 depending how many guitars you own.. Also it keeps you case smelling real good and clean...

The p90 sounds great, but the frets are sharp, the action is highish (yes the bridge is to the deck), and the bridge is a set intonation. Gibson used to be well worth it but now i just cant see buying a newer one for that price. Guitar Center right now folks listed at 550$ a cheapo depot les paul jr. Needs a setup but sounds great!

I bought an SG faded 2 years ago and had the same problem. I took it to a tech and he finally sorted it out. I don't understand why Gibson don't put copper sheilding inside just to make sure there is no static going on especially considering they arnt cheap guitars. I never had this issue on any guitar even far cheaper ones like squires and epiphones. There is no excuse really.

Kiesel is the only company I've seen that copper-shields everything as part of their basic electric guitar building.

Kylie McInnes Ibanez does it as well... my Ibanez RG920 Premium has full copper shielding in the cavity.

Very few companies provide copper shielding in their builds, so clue in and quit trolling on Gibson.

I have exactly the same problem right now with a 2017 SG faded lol. Think I‘m gonna try to fix it with copper tape too. Maybe this will work.

The textured style plastic covers are shielding. They’re usually accompanied with routs covered in shielding paint. Those metal plates need to go man, nothing but trouble in any Les Paul Ive dealt with.

I’ve got the same static issue with a Paul I bought new in 2018. I just haven’t been playing the damned thing and no one seemed to have an intelligent solution. Hopefully this will work for me, although I get static pops and crackles even from the strings. I had had the problem emanating from the original pick guard, so I switched it out and put in a genuine tortoise shell guard which eliminated that noise anyway.

Glad you got yours working ok . I had very similar issue on a brand new 2016 Gibson LP classic a few weeks ago. It was way worse than yours . I did a ton of research on this. I tried all those things you did and tested everything 10 times . Nothing helped at all . The more I moved my hand along the back of the neck the worse it got . I believe it has something to do with the coating material or how it is being applied . And also that it does not happen to every guitar they coat . Just a percentage. Which is why , when the phenomenon began to occur in late 2015 or early 2016 Gibson quickly introduced the apparently new "Shielded " back plates . And they started making a these cockamamy claims and statements about humidity and rubbing dryer sheets and basically saying just about anything to deflect the issue from them . I read about people going through the warranty nightmare and or replacing every electrical component only to have the same problem with static noise generated by the player . Got lot's of guitars and gear , and 35 years exp.... Never has anything remotely like this happen . I just returned it for a full refund ... To old for nonsense like this

Gibson has been installing those pebbled plates on their Les Pauls and SGs for a year or two. My guess is they're using it because it's cheaper than the old-style 2x mirror finished plastic material.

No, they're actually supposed to prevent the very issues this guitar had. It's an easy fix, so all you Gibson bashers can calm the fuck down.

Shield the pickup cavities. I've had a V and a strat that did that. I'll emanated it by completely shielding the the body cavities with shielding paint

The buzz isn't static, it's RF, sounds like it might be AC power hum. It changes when you touch it because your body is acting like an antenna. It's not just the covers, if you grip the wood you're getting a similar effect even after you shielded. Something in the wiring is acting like a radio antenna due to a lack of shielding and/or grounding. Shielding is a good plan and of course the shielding is part of your ground plane which will help ground the whole thing but to properly shield everything would require entering other parts of the guitar. I suspect the shielding & grounding on the cabling is incomplete or ineffective somewhere. Shame Gibson support assumed it was not faulty wiring.

I believe that the plastic covers were acting as a capacitor and storing a charge as a balloon does, when you rub it on a sweater and you hold it above someone’s head and it makes their hair stand up.
