I usually try to find some cons to go along with the pros.. kzbin.infoUgkxnkYCgssg4ZO858cyBdD1JPEaUJ9Up1C_ but it really is a good knife. The blade sits centered in the handle when closed (photo added). It opens effortlessly. Unlocks and closes easily with one hand. It’s a great size for EDC. I wish this exact knife came in one of the premium steels to satisfy the knife snob in me.. but it’s a great tool at a great price as it is. Would buy again.

The Cold Steel Finn Hawk fits right in this category, for £20ish, probably less in the US, Scandi grind, 4" blade, built like a Mora and imo it's Cold Steels version of a Mora. The Finn Bear is also similar and there's the bushcraft folder, the Finn Wolf, but this is fixed blades. All good alternatives if you're on a budget, and if you like knives with Finn in the name.

My only complaint is my fit and finish on the handle wasn’t very good but man that’s a hard to find gripe for that knife. Been very impressed with how well it’s stood up. Not crazy about having my ferro rod on the sheath but that’s an easy fix. Very consistent grind, steel holds up well after a patina builds.

@@seribasI remove the handles and clean them up with sandpaper and then treat them with a few rounds of food grade mineral oil, which I also use on the blades. Works great so far.

I bought my Gerber Prodigy late last year at Wally World for $49.98. I just checked the other day at the knife counter, and they now go for 62.98, and that's in Cheyenne, Wyoming, so you're right about prices. I didn't know it had gone up that much. I do agree with you that it is a great knife for what I got it for, and one of the best knives I've ever owned.

Good job on putting together a nice set of budget knives. As always, the Mora collection never ceases to amaze me. The price point for what you get is just marvelous. I knife snob a bit and go White River and some other rather expensive and well made knives……but in EVERY “kit”…….there’s a Mora of some model. They’re just that good !

Yeah good call, they're a great knife especially as a lightweight "combat" knife. I got one on sale for $25 recently (birthday discount on MidwayUSA). I suppose if his list was meant for more outdoors/belt/companion knife maybe he left the more combat-marketed ones out. The Ontario SP-1 isn't bad for $40 although it's a little bigger and I had to pretty much regrind the edge on mine entirely. There are so many good knives for cheap and despite whatever marketing comes with them, at the end of the day most knives will do most knife tasks pretty well.

Thanks for the overview! I love the Terrasaur, it's a great value. Not as nicely finished maybe as the Mora Garberg, but $30 less and does a good job; has a sharp 90 degree spine for a firesteel. I was looking at the SRK full size and compact, but already have both a Master Hunter and Trailmaster from CS so figure I'm set there. Finally I'm glad you mentioned the Mora Kansbol. They have a version that comes with an orange sheath with extras on it that I really like and plan to pick up. It must have been a while since your last overview, as Buck 119's are getting up there now, especially if you get one with other than a black handle and upgraded steel. Thanks again for the review. 👍

I don't know if I'm happy or ashamed that I have every knife on this list haha. Great list though especially the inclusion of the Drop Forged Hunter which I was seeing on Amazon for $33 for the longest time (maybe still) - that knife doesn't get enough recognition. I'd probably gone with the Bushcraft Black over the Kansbol for general use but yeah the Kansbol can't be beat for low weight and slicing ability. Beats a lot of kitchen knives for food prep. Love the Old Hickory but man do they rust like no other blade I have.

For anyone interested in doing their own sheath or handles, the Terävä Jääkeripukko is available without sheath at less than 50 bucks or bare tang versions at less than 40. With sheaths (which really are premium stuff) the whole kit comes in at around 75-85 USD.m depending on size. Really great knifes from Finland, and an interesting alternative to it’s Scandinavian neighbours, Mora.

Yes it’s a great knife! Also keep in mind that the leather sheath is so thick and high quality that it will probably last through several repurchases of the knife, unless you happen to be rough on your sheaths. My pukko was pretty cosmetically beaten up after 3 years of hard use so I decided to replace it. Popped the new knife in the sheath I still had. Good to go.

Try the Cold Steel Bushman. When I bought it (the drop point, not Bowie), it was 20$ ish and is an excellent wilderness knife. I've carried it to many expeditions in the tropics of India and the coating holds up. Grip is a problem. But you can get some hockey tape / tennis grips for under 5$ and fix that. I love that blade. Easy to sharpen and good at what it does. I have made it a permanent spear to harvest mangoes from my tree 😀

I bought one of the Russell Green River knives from a vendor at a '17th Century Trade Faire' at Fort Loudoun a few years back and he let me read some materials about the history of the knife. The Russell company has been around for about 300 years now and their Green River pattern (eventually copied by other makers) was one of their most popular trade knives - meaning it was used likely by many fur trappers/traders and mountain-man types. Those folks depended on their knives every day. They aren't really heavy use knives but the relatively thin blade can easily be made razor sharp. Unfortunately some lowlife scumbag broke in and stole mine along with several of my knives. I have been replacing some of the stolen ones and exploring new ones but will eventually replace it.

I prefere the higher HT, I use my knives to cut and slice, it is NOT a chopping type of knife. I use a large Becker, Esse or Tops etc. for chopping IF my axe/hatchet is not available. The tip IS for delicate/fine work, stop using wrong tool for a job and tips will stop breaking. I cannot remember the last time I broke a knife tip once I learned how to use knives properly andI use the hard at times.

Another from Cold Steel, their Kobun makes a surprisingly decent woods knife. Aus8 isn't all that great in edge retention but it's pretty tough. Has a sharp spine, good for scraping or fire steels. You get a 5 inch blade in a very slim, lightweight package, easy to carry. Split wood with it? Sure. Slice up onions, carrots, potatoes? Sure. Skin a deer? Maybe not the best skinner but if you have some meat you need cutting... Cut feather sticks? Sure. Carve tent stakes, digging sticks, pot hangers or fire boards for bow drills? Sure. And looks good doin' it (looks better in person than in the pics). $47.

Mora kansbol is the knife I use the most skinning rabbits pairing pigeons skinning a lot of rabbits can get very messy at times so throwing it straight in the washing up bowl is a plus I recently bought a bps knife from the Ukraine love it but I suspect that company will struggle but I hope not

In Australia AU$50 buys even less!! If we want something of reasonable quality from a known brand at this price we really only have Moras (Basic/511/Companion) - which are great value knives for general utility/camping/hunting but lack a bit of punch for survival & harder use. However, step up to under AU$100 then we can find similar knives that you have listed. For me I do love my Moras & Condors for general utility/camp/woodcraft use. Also don't be afraid to shop around - stores often have sales on and you can get a bargain (esp. if you're happy to purchase an older release). Stay safe.

Or you can cold blue the blades with Birchwood Casey's Perma Blue (Paste Gun Blue). There's also a liquid, but I strongly recommend the paste. Better results with considerably less mess.

I own every knife featured bar the Old Hickory purely because they're decent general use knives that I can replace easily without a 2 year lead time if they break to supplement my more expensive ones. I'll echo the sentiment about Condor's quality control being hit or miss but weirdly out of all the blades I own, the edge on Condor's Operator Bowie lent itself to being a fantastic wood processor and camp task knife for me. Opinels will and forever always be my food prep knives and they're cheap as hell. I've heard and seen nothing but good things about Terava's line up which, while a little but pricier than what's shown here (but well under 100 dollars), would still be considered by most to be excellent budget camp tools. In my opinion the Cold Steel SRK dominates the sub $50 field in terms of an excellent jack of all trades knife.

G'day Aaron, still lov'n the Gators, fixed and folding, I assume the base models would be within the 50 USD range. I'm with ya, some scales on the CS Hunter and I'd be in, makes a huge difference on the Survivalist. Cheers Duke.

Milwaukee tools tradesman 4in $25 I've beaten the piss out of this knife and barely had to sharpen it. Only reason it's not on me now is I am trying the Milwaukee hardline 5in AUS, haven't had time to get out to the woods yet with this one.

@@brianm5637 after sanding the handle I removed the scales (handle)and used boiled linseed oil to soak them for about 30 minutes. Then wiped the tang down with olive oil before putting them back on. Used locktight on the screws just incase. I keep olive oil in a small bottle to put on the blade after I clean at the end of each trip.

Moras are always a great choice. I have had some decent luck with my Camillus that I picked up at Wally World. I haven't done alot of HAR testing yet but I have done some batoning and food prep and basic "camp chores" showing my boys how to make tent stakes from fallen branches. Not a bad little knife
