Giethoorn Netherlands | The Venice of Holland

We took a boat tour of Giethoorn in the Netherlands. Actually, we took TWO tours. The first one was a guided tour, and the second one was more of a misguided adventure of avoiding the rain and hail.
The weather is crazy this time of the year in Holland - one minute it is warm and sunny, the next minute it's cold and rainy with wind and hail.
The guided boat tour was covered and behind glass. It came with a free hot coffee or tea and the tour guide was cool and had a lot of interesting information. I don't want to give it all away here and ruin their business.
If you're ever in Giethoorn, taking both of the tours is highly recommended! The guided tour first, and your own tour after where you will then be more familiarised with the environment.

As a resident of Giethoorn, I'd like to clarify a few things about punting, or "punteren" as we call it here and the lake. Punting Tradition: Children here still learn how to punt, but the pole you might have seen is likely a regular beam. A traditional "punterboom" is a specialized pole that allows skilled punters to reach speeds of up to 30 km/h. We even have punting contests using these poles! History of the Lake: While the lake might seem entirely man-made, it has a fascinating history. Originally, it was a swamp filled with peat. Around 1400, peat extraction began. As peat mining intensified, practices became less careful. The February storm of 1825 played a dramatic role in shaping the lake we see today. The storm caused significant flooding, washing away the land between smaller bodies of water, essentially creating the lake. Beulakerwijde: Interestingly, a neighboring village called Beulaker was swallowed by the floodwaters. Now, Beulakerwijde lake occupies its former location, with depths ranging from 1 meter at the edges to around 6 meters in the center. Depth and Safety: The main area where you where punting typically has a depth of 1 meter. However, there are deeper sections reaching up to 6 meters. Due to the lake's uneven bottom and hidden potholes, there have been unfortunate drownings in the past. Tour Guides: It's important to remember that tour guides aren't always locals. While they do their best, some information they share might not be entirely accurate. I hope this clarifies some things about punting and the history of Giethoorn's beautiful lake.

THIS! THIS is the real information right here! Thank you so much for this comment! This is really interesting and I couldn't imagine the skill it would take to reach 30 km/h doing that! There's such a beautiful energy to giethoorn, it's really an experience on its own. We are planning on going back and spending a little more time on one of the boats. Maybe bring some picnic food and get some good sun. The nature was beautiful. The people were nice and friendly. The air is fresh, and the grass is green...what more could you ask for? 😎

I consider using those electric boats cheating. Last time I was there, my wife insisted on hiring one, but I prefer hiring a punter (with sail) and I usually surprise quite a few people with that (including my wife the first time she went with me).

Next time visit the coastline of the Netherlands like Schoorl aan zee, Zandvoort or visit one of the islands. The beaches are beautiful. You have great cities like Haarlem or Alkmaar not far from the coast. My favorite cities in de south are Den Bosch and ofcourse Maastricht. Try to avoid places like Giethoorn or Amsterdam.

Lol, I went there today. Glorious sunny day. But it's still a tourist trap. The 'Venice of the Netherlands ' is Amsterdam. Yes, it is a natural lake, formed after the 1825 flood.
