very good review, I am 65 years old and have owned many cars. The best of all (that I still drive) is the 2006 sedan 9-5 aero 2.3L. It has 175,000km and no body noise, rattle or loose parts that bother. Quiet and performs like a new bmw. Only the air conditioner and cup holder don't work anymore, ask me if i care. yet it has a hard life here in Quebec with our big winters! Conclusion, driving feeling is no compareson, i love it.

Hi, I'm based in Toronto. Is your 2006 9-5 aero the final facelift version? I was looking at a 2004 9-5 aero, which I believe is the first facelift version. Would you recommend it? I came from three 9-3s, three Volvo XC70s, and two modern expensive Mercedes. Now I just want to go back to simple true driving pleasure with somewhat reliability.

@@agnesf2659 Hi, I'm based in the Netherlands and used to own a 2.3t SE from '98 tuned from 170hp to 235hp, so like the blue one in this vid. Current I own a '08 Aero with 260hp (EDNA nickname) AND the latest edition in this video, a 2.8 V6 Aero from 2010. The best quality goes to the '98, everything feels solid and even though tuned, it never missed a beat besides a trottle body (fly by wire) and a few Turbo's. I traded it in for my '08 Aero at 254.000km. The '08....., what a car, automatic with a lot of goodies, this is THE car I will pick if I need to drive more than 250km, these ventilated seats....., never found anything better, not even in a Audi, Merc or Bentley Continental GT, the build quality however is another thing, not great, overall it has 105.000km on it now and no major issues at all. The 2010 NG is a very nice car to see, large (for European standards) 4-wheel drive, sport seats, on board entertainment system, just 103.500km, but....., had to change the timing chain, problems with the x-wheel-drive, lot of road noice, it's not a real Saab anymore in feeling, seats look great but don't even come close to the '08 and maybe, just maybe in the shadow of my old 1998 one. Overall my choice would go to an '03-'09 Aero (with or without facelift). My '08 is now 15 years old and I still enjoy every single ride in it, even though I have to accept the poor build quality of this facelift edition. The maker of this video does hit the nail pretty good.

It’s such a shame that the quality of the 9-5 got worse as time went on. I’ve got a 2005 2.3t (shark nose, currently tuned to about 240bhp) and my mechanic mentions every time I see him about how mine is better built than a Dame Edna and the earlier ones were better than mine.

Its funny, I start reading your words and see 65 and think 'some old bloke' ... and here am I 67 years old ! Yes, the 9.5 is a brilliant car, I have the two Aero's, one '02 sedan and an '04 wagon. And even at 200,000 kms that 250hp seems an understatement. Reckon my Saabs will see me out, and what a way to go !

I’m also in Montreal. I drive a 2004 9-5 Arc manual. Same engine and turbo as the Aero, but detuned to 220 hp. My A/C also stopped working, there was a leak in the evaporator, possibly because the previous owners never changed the cabin filter in 16 years, it was completely full and would retain moisture. But fortunately, replacing the evaporator is not that hard of a job, it doesn’t require a dashboard removal like in many other cars. I did it myself along with replacing then condenser, drier and expansion valve and filling the system with gas and oil. A/C works great now and I learned a lot about how A/C works. I love the car, but being a northern car, rust is starting to become an issue because of the salt we use on the roads during winter.

Great video! My late father sold Saabs for 43 years. Been a Saab freak from birth❤️🇸🇪 That "Faster than a Porsche" however was first introduced with the 1993 2,3 Saab 9000 Aero, not the 9-5. Now that car is something special! To me easily Saabs best car. I have a -94 in the garage together with my daily 2009 9-5 Griffin.

Since the publication of the Emily EVs this year, there are noises recently about a gathering of investors in the revival of NEVS and hopefully the rise from the ashes of the Saab name. Also the Saab factory in Trollhatton has commenced the manufacturing and supply of new parts for all Saabs. Here’s fingers crossed!

I live in Australia and back in 2013 after Saab went under there were various Dealerships with 2011 Saab 9-5 Aero's that had just been sitting in the showroom for 2 years doing the occasional test drive meaning they were effectively 'brand new.' The original RRP of the 2011 9-5 Aero was $95k Aud, the dealers in 2013 were selling them for $35k AUD... If I wasn't a committed convertible driver back then I would've bought one.

I had 5 Saab’s since 1984 , best seats ever, my 15,000 mile road trip across Canada and the USA proved it to me. Tuned 93 255 hp 280 lbs torque with modified suspension, but not hard just tighter. Stock shocks with beefier rollbars, upgraded bushings, shock tower, bracing, and lower chassis. My fav car, sadly gone.

Interesting to see the evolution of the 9-5. Such a shame that cost cutting and the eventual demise of Saab led to the NG 9-5 being a disappointment. It's such a good looking car. If Saab had been around longer and been able to develop the car, it could have been great.

Great video. I've got an Edna and an NG. NGs really do benefit from the right tyres as regards road noise. Put some Goodyear Eagles on there and it will improve a lot, to the point that mine is now better than the Edna with Dunlop Sports on. The ride, however, is way better on the Edna... As are the chairs.

I have my second Saab 9-5 ng now., had a 2010 TiD4 like you had for 4 years, switched to cadillac for a year then went back to a 1.6l turbo4 frpm 2011. I have a few more extras tho, both my cars had the exact same amount of extras. Full leather seats, HUD & LWD to name a few. But i really like the TiD4 above the turbo4 1,6. I had a 2001 Aero with all extras exept sunroof and the nav. =) I will drive my arctic white NG till the end of days.

I actually owned one of the 3 Hirsch Trolls built here in Australia. Basically, Saab Australia took three 9-5 Aeros and put every Hirsch option on them; stage 3 tune, Hirsch twin exhaust, Hirsch front and back bumpers, door cappings, carbon dash and steering wheel, brake pads & discs, and Hirsch alloys. 305bhp and V8-killing torque. What a car, and I've regretted selling it from the day it left my driveway.

The 3.0 V6 did have a turbocharger. It was an asymmetric one and used the exhaust gases of only 3 cylinder to boost the whole engine. Here in germany we call the second facelift „Brille“ or „Chrombrille“ which means glasses or chrome glasses. Didnt know about the edna nickname🤔 Unfortunately you didnt talk about the 1.9 TiD engine. But still an amazing overview about the 9-5 generations. Keep up the good work👍🏻

I hope you eventually get the opportunity to drive the Aero XWD spec of this me 9-5NG. It literally feels super different than the turbo 4 models. There are a few things to be desired, such as the quirky cupholder, etc. I recently was able to pick up one of these about two months ago and out of the five Saabs that I have owned, it has definitely come near the top of the list. Only topped by the 9-3 Viggen It’s definitely a parts bin Insignia, but I absolutely adore the styling and it is a very good one.

Great video! Helped me decide to go after a Dame Edna, instead of the NG. Was always curious about the NG, but it certainly seems to have the heart of a buick. I will totally agree about the NG9-3 clutch. Never had a clutch as effortless and enjoyable. The return spring on the pedal makes a huge difference, as you will find out when it falls off around 150k miles. Easy to replace, but man is that clutch stiff when the spring is gone.

Wow, finally someone that knows and truly appreciates the OG 9-5 hot estate, or Aero Sport Combi….. You are right, these are highly under appreciated and overlooked but the best car ever and they, to me, are by far better and more utilitarian than any brand new tiny/small/medium X-over that everyone seem to be so crazy over! Holds lots AND a blast to drive and with basic mechanic knowledge and skills can be made even faster! Love my ‘02 Aero Combi and though my plates aren’t personalized, they are genuine Sweden plates, and yes, I’ve made a few mods/upgrades….314mm front brake/caliper swap w-HEL steel lines, stage 2 tune, ‘06+ turbo/king cobra intake pipe, with a stainless down pipe in the future! The oil sludge issue that were common with these was luckily avoided with mine, so I can only assume the original owner maintained it regularly, but I went ahead and did the oil crank case pcv update kit. With the exception of the HEL brake lines, all parts are genuine original Saab both new and refreshed used!

Great vid, thanks mate. I used to have a 1999 9-3 and loved it. I looked at but never bought a 2003 9-5 which I regret. I did go test drive the 9-5 Gen II and was totally disappointed five minutes after sitting in it. It definitely felt like Saab/GM had missed the boat and it felt like the interior was a major step back at launch and then when one considered the high pricing there was no way I was going to buy one. Sadly, probably many felt the same and GM killed off Saab shortly after that.

I bought a 2001 2.3t 9-5 used in 20005 at a bargain basement price. It now has almost 160K miles on it. Worst features: stupid front drink holder (broken spring) and front wheel bearings have been changed twice. Best features: good gas mileage for such a heavy car (keep your foot out of the turbo!) and comfortable on long trips. Amazing for a 23 year old car.

Really enjoyed your video. I had a '02 9-5 Linear, and I currently own a '07 facelift 9-3 Aero. Honestly I really miss the old beast. The built quality was absolutely amazing, compared to my current 9-3, everything squeaks and cracks, GMs plastics have ruined the whole experience. The engine and driving experience is - as you mentioned - waaay more fun in the 9-3, as it's more nimble. Just as a quick question, what MPG do you usually pull out with your facelift 9-5 Aero?

The amount of wires (3 looms) coming out of the Denso unit is intimidating. Would it be possible for you to recommend a $200-ish head unit AND the wiring conversion kits needed to make whatever the unit is into plug and play/ or with minimal splicing? Hi there ! I have a 1999 base model automatic 2.0t which was my dads last car. I love it, but it suffered a serious breakdown a couple of weeks ago and with a repair quote of €1500 is probably on the way to Saab Valhalla. I’m gutted, I’m offering it free to a good home to someone with the know how to repair it. It’s 200km from home so it’s a no no for me. Like you I prefer the pre-facelift cars and I’ve already sourced a replacement in the UK which I’ll be picking up in August and driving back home to France. It’s a 2004 automatic Aero estate with 178k on the clock has FSH and upgraded shocks and suspension. I have a few questions if you could enlighten me? It’s a 2004 model. - will it have the upgraded PCV and so no risk of having sludge issues? - will it be a 4 or 5-speed automatic gearbox in 2004? - since I need to change the headlights for LHD, will the LHD units I fitted to my dad’s 1999 model fit ? As far as my research tells me, they have the same Valeo part number - the seller is asking £1200, does that seem reasonable ? - given current fuel prices (>€2.00/litre in France for Unleaded E5 or E10 at the moment) can it be remapped to take E85 ethanol ? (€0.80/litre) - what sort of fuel consumption can I expect? Any other info or tips you’d have on the 2004 Aero estate would be gratefully received. Thanks, Rob PS Subscribed ! Great video.

I bought my first '89 9000S with 66,000 miles for $8000 in '96 and drove in 100,000 additional miles before selling in privately, but the last few years it became increasingly unreliable and expensive. Then in '02 I bought an off lease '98 with 30,000 miles for $17,000 that a used car dealer bought at an auction which I kept until spring of '19 with 145,000 miles but again became increasingly unreliable with electronics failing and traded for nominal value though it still "looked good" but probably never used again. I really liked them but as you get older reliability is a major must issue.

Nice video. Have a Volvo V50 now. I like it. But the seats look much more comfortable on the Saab 9-5. Which one is more reliable, the 2005 or the 2006-2009? Not sure how I'd feel driving it. They're so cheap used in the US, but I feel like people would see me as driving a luxury car. This is why I like the Volvo V50. It's very modest. But if I ever get a more stable job (I'm a starving artist Naturopathic doctor), it's a beautiful car. Liked it as a kid. Would prefer the Saab 9-3 2010 lookswise, but the seats don't seem as comfortable, and I'm pretty sure the power would feel even less than the Volvo.

Anything after 2004 has fewer issues. But they're all reliable if you look after them properly

Which are best autos or manuals in hot versions?
@SaabUnleashed
@SaabUnleashed 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on personal preference. The manual is obviously sportier, it is capable of a faster 0-60 time and for this reason it's what I would choose if I was going to modify it. The auto is awesome of you want an easy, smooth daily ride coupled with epic acceleration.

I thought the final gen 9-5 was beautiful, inside and out. A shame their time was at an end. I had a 2002 9-3, which is still my favorite vehicle.

I like the look of the last generation 9-5 but don't think I could go for it as too much of the car just isn't Saab. Somehow the interior looks less substantial and less robust - wonder if these age more poorly than the earlier models

Wouldn't part with my 2005 Aero for anything. The best last 'true' Saab ever made. The quality in later versions doesn't compare. GM cost cutting is call too obvious. Sadly, we'll never know what would have come next.

Sorry, but that is not an opinion I agree with. GM had a little influence on the earlier cars and they were brilliant. The 9-5 only exists because of GM, but they are true Saabs

In my opinion, 95 NG has only improved the dashboard which looks complete having clean lines but the seats and acceleration are worse than previous models. The exterior is irrelevant for a driver who spends his/her time inside the car. The 95 NG looks clean but I hate to imagine what happens after even a minor accident (spare parts). I dislike a look of 95 OG rear lights, 93 NG seems to be the best compromise but the interior design is the worst one in history...?

Saab 9-5 was a decided Downgrade car. There were slightly More 9000's built than 9-5'... 9-5 engines were initially seriously reduced in structure and durability Later versions recieved some Crap 4 cyl GM engine. Drive feel of a 9-5 is Markedly tinnier /flimsier than a 9000. Surprisingly so Comparison Drive either 100 feet and the differences are Glaring. Enough of the Bullshit... Saabs in general from 1999 onwards were poor imitations of the previous Saabs. Earlier 9000's were, at one point; Saab Advertised as being Quicker from 50 to 100 than a Ferrari. Again .. New Saab fanboys latch onto the GM era cars as being 'wunnerful' when in reality they were varying shades of Poor imitations. Simply because the newbies didn't know better.
Don’t believe everything you hear about the SAAB 9-5 NG!
