For people that assemble their PC first: Make sure NOT to use the PC power button! Took me 30 minutes to figure this out. Just make sure your PSU is ON. Press the flash button and it will come to life and start flashing. It does make sense since powering up will obviously try booting with the current BIOS, but I didn't think of it until I read it elsewhere. Thought I'd pass it on! 🥳

Much more helpful than gigabytes actual guide. They tell you to rename the bios file but didn't tell you which one is which. I guessed correctly but there's no need for them to be unclear.

Thanks for the guide! My computer just stopped after a couple of seconds after I pushed the Q-flash button. After A LOT of time spent it turned out that it is really important you use the correct version of USB stick.. Had a new USB 3 - no go.. Found a really old USB (no name, guessing USB 1.0) - no go... Third times a charm, found a "mid-age" USB (no name) which I guess was a USB 2.0.. Worked!! I guess it is somewhat dependent on the BIOS currently installed but to anyone facing problems, fiddle around a bit with different USB sticks..

Usually dont comment but this was a life saver! Didnt have windows installed, and wasnt sure how to go about resetting the BIOS after I did the update and got a black screen. Read the manual and came across the q flash button but the manual gave a very bare bones description. This was very clear and to the point! For anyone who has gotten a black screen after updating, do these steps and make sure youre going back to the original BIOS version or earlier.

This was the video I needed to feel at ease about using the Q Flash bios update on my new, but fully built, system. Seems everyone want to show me I can do it w/o a CPU installed. Great, I know that. I needed the reassurance the process was the same with a built system. The comments here also helped to assure me it's done without any boot up, not even going into bios. Just power to the MB and then Q Flash. Since the newest BIOS update has changes for my specific GPU, I'll disconnect that first just to be safe (and because it's easy to do.) PC Jack - since your video is showing Q Flash with a built system you might want to include that in your headline or high in your notes. It sets your video apart. The process is the same as just doing a naked MB, but that's hard to confirm without seeing a video where it's done, which this one does.

So the update process ran for about a minute with the orange blinking light but then the PC turned off. I waited about 20 min to make sure it was not a power cycle and turned it on only to find that the 13900k is still not recognized in the BIOS same debug lightshow with CPU and DRAM. What could it be? I used F22 should I use a different one? I should mention that the CPU DEBUG light is solid red during the flashback process. Is that normal if all components are installed? **SOLVED + PSA** DO NOT USE F22 BIOS FILE FOR FLASHING BIOS USE F20!!!

For anyone having issues where the Q Flash Plus doesnt start with the z690 aorus master board, heres a fix that worked for a friend. Theres a power button on the mainboard itself.Basically what you want to do is plug in the USB Stick (I used an USB 3.1 32gb stick, people say 2.0 works better however) in the bios / q flash slot on the back of the mainboard, turn on the PSU and press the Q Flash plus button. If it works, im glad! If it doesnt, Turn off the board through the Power button on the mainboard itself, dont use the PSU Power off button. Then when its turned off, press the q flash button Again and it should flash! It will blink orange for a few mins (2-5 mins).

Oh, God! Thank you! Bought z690 new aorus master and 13gen intel CPU. Failed to update BIOS using Q-Flash+, tried over 10 different usb flash-drives, F20,21,22 bios versions, read forums, a lot of youtube videos and finally saw your comment! Started MB with power button on the MB, then turned it off with the same button, pressed Q-flash button and it finally began to blink! After 5 min BIOS was successfully updated.

2:04 "And do not power down the system for any reason whatsoever, as you can potentially brick the system" While correct and for the most part you might be in trouble, the best part about Q Flash Plus is the ability to simply do it again if it fails/ if the power goes out etc. It's basically DualBios 2.0, but if it failed without a power outage you will need a second system to download and load a new BIOS with.

The other thing is I could not format my flash drive to FAT32 because it's too large, I only have a 64GB flash drive so the option to format was called exFAT or something... Any tips here please? @@Juhziz00 You can only do a BIOS update if you have a USB formatted to FAT32. You should try to get a smaller USB drive. Borrow or buy a USB with a max capacity of 32GB or it's not going to work.

Are you sure all your parts are functioning? Maybe start by testing each stick of memory, PSU, reseating CPU, etc but besides that I'd maybe just try the BIOS update again just in case.

Hi! Thank you for creating the tutorial and keeping it so succinct and to the point! I'm trying to perform this bios update after putting a new PC together and no matter what I do, the LED for the Q-Flash button just won't light up (like it does in your video). I have an old FAT32 usb 2.0 stick with the renamed file plugged in the correct port, checked the power cable to the PSU, the cable is fine, I removed everything except the 13th gen processor (which was a hassle to attach with a huge fan); no matter what after I press the Q-Flash button, nothing happens, no LED activity. Could you please advise on what else I could try? I'm thinking of replacing the PSU next, but if that doesn't work, I'm at a loss. :(

Cheers for watching! Besides attempting to update the BIOS, if you just try to turn the system on (Not expecting it to post) does it actually power on? If not then it could point towards the PSU being at fault.

@@PCJack thank you for the response! TLDR: I think it was the PSU, but not sure why. I replaced the PSU (PSU1) with an old one (PSU2) and when I turned the old PSU2 on, the card gave a little flash (the thick part between the processor and the ports), then the red LEDs started flashing, neither happened with PSU1. After multiple attempts with PSU1 yesterday I had the wrong bios file on my usb, so q-flash button did nothing at this point. I put the right file on the usb, and then the q-flash button worked from first attempt and the LED next to it lit up. I left it alone for 20 minutes, then turned the PSU2 off. Tried to attached PSU1 again, no flash, no red LEDs. Very suspicious. I went to the store and they checked PSU1, it appeared to provide some power when they tested it with some special device, and its fan did spin for them. Didn't spin for me, even once. Still not sure why. Bought a new PSU3, plugged that in, managed to get into bios, no problem. Still not sure what was wrong with PSU1, but at least they took it back. Some other notes, I initially got the right bios file, but then had paranoia that my card was rev 1.x not 1.0, and downloaded that bios instead. Turns out, it's 1.0 and even though the files have the same name, date and size, they are different files! The motherboard has the revision number printed on it. For anyone in the same situation, check your revision on the card and download the right bios file. Your card won't do anything if you try to press q-flash with the wrong file on your usb stick.

I bricked a motherboard (z690 aero G ddr4 $$$ ) last week trying to update the bios; Not happy about it; got a z790 ($$$) replacement instead to not have to do this; costly human mistake probably. I'll keep it and play with it just in case I can make it work again, there's power (red led on the motherboard, but the qflash led does not flash when I press the button).

Thanks, Jack for the great tutorial. you had a lot of appreciation here already, let me add a little be to it too. Having followed all of this, it still does not boot, and does not give me a display picture, but gives 5 short beeps now upon booting. Different sources say it can be a CPU, memory, or video card with no signal issue ... Tryed other video cards get the same 5-beep problem. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms?. PS: tried both F20 and F21 versions. Prior to F20 was getting 5 long beeps, which I attribute to a problem with the CPU (13 Gen in nonsupported version of bios) I have also noticed, that prior to updating to F20 or F21, the Led lights were not available around the chipset heatsink, however once updated - it's all as bright as a Christmas tree. Yet, 5 short beeps.

One good idea could be to clear CMOS in case but besides that I would check where possible if your memory is working correctly but besides that could just be an issue with the motherboard sadly. Hi, thanks for the tuto. On the motherboard page Z690-AORUS-ELITE-DDR4-rev-10 there is now a note : "Please make sure Intel VMD driver is updated to v19.5 or above before installing 13th Gen Processors. Windows crashes with 13th Gen Processors when Intel VMD (RAID) has been configured on 12th Gen without v19.5 updated." how to install the latest Intel VMD driver (OS installation) before installing the 13th processor. Any idea ?

Hey! No problem 👍 It seems that note was added after I filmed this. I haven't done so and my Windows install has been fine tbh. At the very least if you aren't upgrading from 12th gen, maybe just install the recommended driver after updating in case.

I think that it's when you want to update from the BIOS screen (with an existing working system with windows installed) If you have the Intel VDM (raid) , update the driver in windows before updating the bios.

I am working on the Gigabyte Aorus Ultra z690. Trying to update the BIOS to make it work with 13600K. I am using a 256GB Gen 3.1 USB flash drive. After I pressed the Q-flash button, the power supply was on for around 5 seconds, with no Q-flash LED on, then everything just shut down. I reviewed lots of videos and the comments. It seems like the over-sized flash drive is causing the problem. Now, I am still waiting for the gen 2 USB flash drive at a smaller size and hopefully it will work.

@@federicobottalico7000 If no USB flash driver attached, the computer didn't shut down, the power supply is working, all fans are on, but just nothing loaded and no display on monitor, cause the motherboard can't recognize the 13th gen CPU with the old BIOS.

@@kelvinwu8588 i solve, For example, a screwdriver must be inserted by touching the two pins of the Clear c mos, with the PC off obviously. When you press the q flash button, hold it for 2-3 seconds, and of course be sure to rename well the file of usb pen (put into 3.0).

Hey there! Im stuck at this point. I have my z790 elite ax ddr4,i have no CPU yet but i want to update the bios because im not sure the mobo will work with 14.gen without fresh bios. So my problem is when i plug the 24,and the 8 pin from PSU to moobo,the flash drive is in,and the PSU automatically starts working when i turn on. Ok the readme file says it has to be bootable USB so how & what do I make bootable with DOS UNIX like how? You didn’t make yours bootable???

Before you did this, was your display even turning on? Mine isn't currently, but I think it's because the bios needs to be updated

No I wouldn't get a display out until I completed the update first.

After I formatted my USB thumb drive, I still see a folder called "system volume information". It's still there despite several rounds of formatting. Is that normal and can this drive still be used to flash my BIOS?

Provided the actual format of the USB is still FAT32 then it should be fine.
