Louis Jordan. Swoon. Perfect for the part. Loved his entire Gigi segment at the end...the way he sang the song and acted it out. So romantic. They don't come like him anymore.

These were the musicals we all enjoyed, special actors and times long gone. Where we would enjoy these films and dream we were part of them. Nostalgic feelings and sadness for a different kind of time that we thought as magical. Glad to have shared this magic with these wonderful actors.

He was a classically trained actor, but he had virtually no formal training in song. And yet the rich quality of his baritone in the closing lines makes the hairs on my neck stand endwise. He was a rare and tragically underappreciated talent.
@michaelhuck4 жыл бұрын
actually this might be true for the Academy and the mainstream press but certainly not by the audience. His career was incredible over decades, he worked with the best from Hitchcock to Minelli and even when he grew older got very good parts ie in Columbo and at 60 (!!!) he became the first Bond villain who looked bette than Bond! And even the smaller Horror movies he did like Swanp Thing are just great because he is in it. He is one of those actors like von Stroheim or Stewart you just can´t take your eyes of, he is simply too good.

Wonderful musical! Loved the actors and songs! It's a shame Hollywood doesn't make musicals like this anymore. But, when I think about it, they don't really have the actors like this anymore either! Maybe I'm just getting too old! LOL

Dominic O'Flynn Agree. Enjoyed the ones you mentioned. I also loved the Sound of Music (a favorite), West Side Story, Mary Poppins, and more recently I did enjoy watching Dreamgirls with Jennifer Hudson when it came out.
@lbroderick7839 жыл бұрын
Dominic O'Flynn I do like Julie Andrews. It's been a long time since I've watched Thoroughly Modern Millie. It's funny that you would think that's her best performance because I thought you had made a mistake in her being in it and had to look it up. You're right she was in it but the actress that I remember starring in it, and evidently was the one that made an impression on me at the time was Mary Tyler Moore. I didn't remember Julie being in it. I'll have to watch it again.

I was in love with Louis Jordan when I was a teenager. What a handsome man and a good actor too. He was good in “Can Can”. I wish you could find him singing, “You do something to me”. He sand it in “Gigi”.

I just found it, Jackie, but he sang it in "Can-Can", not "Gigi". I suspect you may have had a crush on M. Jourdan, because I thought his rendition of the song was pretty ordinary.

Muffett53 The film has a "red" color splashed around the frame for some reason. I remember it being extremely red in theaters.
@Muffett539 жыл бұрын
Was this recently? The films that are old...don't last. I don't know if they can make it so that it can be seen on a big screen again That would be nice tho. I'd have tried to ignore the red.
@Pimp-Master9 жыл бұрын
The last time I saw it in theaters was 1965 or so. (The Conejo in Thousand Oaks, Cal.). The Gigi LP sound recording also has red splashed around it on the cover art; so it's not just me making this up. The movie would likely need to be restored digitally, which helps clear up the sound track immensely. I've seen restorations of The Music Man from '62 on the big screen (The Egyptian in Hollywood, Ca.) and it's sometimes better than anyone could hear originally. Visuals are not always improved. Singing in the Rain (from '52) made it to Blu-Ray, and I saw it projected. Seemed perfect to me. If Gigi is on Blu-Ray, then that's the closest you'll get to 35mm projection these days.
@Muffett539 жыл бұрын
That's odd. The red. OH I'd LOVE to see those old movies on big screen. I remember seeing Blue Hawaii. I was young then. lol Incredible Mr Limpit...very young then... so it was cute/kid friendly/silly. I sure love the old musicals. A couple of movies that would be awesome... Gone With The Wind and How The West Was Won. I can make out the dividing lines on the latter. Panoramic views.

Película maravillosa. Música excelente, fotografía, vestuario, y decorados maravillosos. Muy bien dirigida e interpretada. Leslie Caron, Louis Jourdan, Maurice Chevalier, H. Gingold, Zsa Zsa Gabor, magníficos.

This is one of my favorite musical numbers from movies. It is so well stage and advances the story in ways most movie songs do not. And Louis Jourdan handles the song so well. It always amazed me that he did not become a super star after this movie. But, even Leslie Caron only had one good role after this (my opinion) -- in "Fanny." A tough business -- movies.
