"Welcome back" sounds so sweet coming from the great Cary. I can't imagine how sad it was for Ingrid when Hollywood and USA were so bad to her.

@@ballwreck1139 I'm sorry to disagree with you Gigi was an overblown musical film with charm and at times it was entertaining, however The Big Country was really a bit better, however Hollywood wasn't ready for a sprawling Western Film to get the Oscar, and sadly it wasn't even mentioned in nomination, Burl Ives Won for Best Supporting Actor in a role that was twice as good as any actor in Gigi! Many people think that The Big Country was robbed of many awards including Best Score(Music) that Jerome Moross should have Won, you may not believe this but now after all these years many people believe this to be true!

@@scottmiller6495 I agree about "Gigi", but I think that "The Big Country" was overblown, also! Plus, I can't even recall "Separate Tables" which won best actor/actress!

"Gigi"'s Oscar is a tribute to not only the film but its producer, Arthur Freed, whose MGM unit was responsible for several superior film musicals for several years. This was his career climax. Tastes changed and the original film musical was basically dead after the 1950s. "Best Picture" musicals were stage-to-film transfers ("West Side Story" to "Chicago") after "Gigi," although its tunesmiths were Broadway's Lerner & Loewe. Gigi deserved every Oscar.

dr strangelove let me get this straight. You’re ripping her for slipping on a single word in English, in front of millions of people, yet you write this mess: “I wish Mr. Grant or Mr. Lewis would have presented the Oscar instead, they where both soo funny comideans! :D And I have NO IDEA how Freed could be serius when he won his Oscar beacuse Gigi is a so hatedfilm. :) “ Get the fuck out of here. Ingrid Bergman spoke Swedish, German and French fluently, and was damned near fluent in English and Italian. I don’t know what third world shit hole you crawled out of, but you sure as hell can’t write in English.

I just watched Gigi and the question is..how that movie got 9 statuettes besides the best picture? I didn't watch all 59's films, but they had Vertigo which it is amazing. That's disappointed Academy.

I always have to wonder how much better the film "Gigi" would have been if Audrey Hepburn had reprised her title role in the 1951 Broadway production. I believe that the producer and/or director offered her the role but that she turned it down. Leslie Caron's singing voice in the movie was dubbed by Marni Nixon, who would also dub Miss Hepburn's singing voice in "My Fair Lady" (1964).
