He needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Join the ranks. RIP Mr. Scott-Heron. Nobody did it any better than you.

What does Gil have to do with rock. Wake up people is he doing rock and roll. That's like saying Malcolm was all about civil rigjhts. Gil had a message and his jazzy music carried it. Damn

@@jerrybracey19 rocknroll hall of fame doesnt mean it has to be poopy rock music, its to honour great musicians

@@carioca56 i only got to see him once- right before he left this earth. He was telling so many jokes, and me and my friend were rolling. The man was hilarious! The jokes were lost on the rest of the audience. He was great, but so the show itself just wasn't that great (the whole environment makes a show for me). i'm so glad i got to see him though. It was on my bucket list for many years. i always thought of him as my uncle (in my mind).

I first heard Winter in America in 1974 - I was 18. His music was nothing like anything else being produced at that time. I was hooked. Have almost all of his albums before and since. The most under-celebrated genius of all time.

Sadly we did lose Gil Scott Heron... though thank God he lives on thru the music he left us !

If you haven't heard the 1970's studio cut of this tune check it out, it's the best version; it's got a spacey keyboard flourish at the start, the drums are low key but in the pocket, and at the end when the horn section enters the groove I get tingles up my spine every time without fail. "Odds are we're gonna lose someplace, sometime... damn near totally destroyed, one time..."

This man was a Hero to me. He spoke truth to power and made music that changed the way so many of us viewed the world. I owe him much of my political mindset including my NEED to speak out against injustice. You will be missed, but your music will continue to inspire. RIP GSH.

I saw Gil on a beautiful summer day two summers ago in Central Park. It was one of the most fondest days of my life. He didn't have to try to be soulful. He WAS soul! RIP Gil! Music with meaning. Thank You!

I was at Tuskegee Institute in 1975/76 and saw Gil Scott in concert. It was a truly moving experience becasue after that I was sold on him, his music and his message. His unique and unparalleled voice and words makes him truly irreplacable. Thanks for the memories Mr. Scott-H eron.

I was fortunate enough to see Gil Scott back in 1979 on Tulane univ. campus. I was 19 student . He made an impression on me and the crowd. Very introspective and observant of the ways society is influenced.🎼🎹💫

Holy shit he's still layin' it down! I was slammed to learn Gil got cracked. His words and authoritative voice were a rock 4 me coming through some sh*t. Heeded his positions against drug life and stepped outa that world years ago. Makes it all the harder seeing him slip. The mind & soul are still there though. It's effin awesome how he recalls all these words w/out a teleprompter & breaths life into them with that soulful voice. Too bad no one makes music like this anymore. An American Treasure

I saw Gil on both his Australian tours in the 90s with essentially this band. Amazing the first time... unbelievable energy, soul and skill... but second time, sadly Gil was too messed up to hold it together. Watched this great band taking 10 minute solos while GSH nodded off at the keyboards. Hope things are better now for Gil. A great prophet and musical originator. Eternal gratitude and respect.

Used to go home on the weekends - Dam Neck VA to Chester, Media, and Philadelphia PA. 1970 Buick Le Sabre Custom. Good tape player and stereo. This song, this album, played on the 8 track over and over, all the way back to base; big bottle of Cribari and Old Gold or Chesterfield filters. Oddly enough I was Nuke submariner. Safety yes, No Nukes, no. Still, Mr. Gil Scott Heron, thank you for al the music. the lyrics, and life lessons, RIP brother, C U some day.

I just feel in love with this fine man and his music, I have been searching for lady day and the bottle for some time now, my oldest brother use to play all types of music, and so did my parents, but no one could tell me that this was the man behind those songs, I got the names mixed up that is why, my brother has been sitting on a gold mine for all these years, and now he is going to make me a Gil Scott cd, I can't wait.

I was never considered a revolutionary but I always looked at Gil Scott Heron as an international jazz man of enormous appeal and ability. He came down to do a concert in Washington Square. NYU. in1968.I have always admired his music. I never felt that it was imperative to buy in to this theory.

A Great Loss today. He was the same age as I, yet influenced me somewhat in the 70s. He had an eloquent vision to identify and decry problems he saw with American society at large as well as problems particular to African Americans. If only more people had taken his advice to heart since he started out . . .
