@@MrSlashblade Jordan was winning scoring Champ and MVP both in the 80s and 90s. It's not meaningless because Jordan proved it so. I think Gil's point is that the general basketball fan (and let's face it, they outnumber people who think on a deeper level about the game like you do) places so much of an emphasis on winning that they ignore all other context around the winning or the losing. (unless we're talking about Jordan) The discourse around Jordan scoring 63pts in a round 1 loss or losing to the Magic in '95 would look different today than it did back then. With the '95 loss, Jordan gets the "he wasn't in basketball shape" excuse, but how many of today's players would get that excuse for their losses?

Sorry to Gilbert, but Wilt will always be the actual STAT KING. Best scorer ever, best rebounder & shot blocker, only center to lead the L in assists. Cumulative stats only speak to longevity. Guys in the 60s & 70s didnt play 20 years, bc once they had that big knee surgery (including Wilt), they were very nearly DONE, or actually done. So I tend to compare these things within an era. Old time players didn't have ANY of the advantages today's players have. But you can kind of compare numbers on a per game and per season basis... and in that, Wilt is it for me.

To your point about totals. While I agree, it's not like that's not indicative of greatness. Of all the players that have played as long as Bron, or longer, none of them are close in across the board statistical totals, not Kobe, not Kareem, etc. It's in no way easy to be great at sports for two decades. It's one of the most uniquely challenging things to exist for humans period. No human in history has been as good as LeBron in their 20th year of professional sports participation. In LeBron's 20th season he's being made fun of for failing to carry a team to a championship. While 99.9% of players ever to play at his age get standing ovations just for taking the floor. It's frankly weird that people are so dismissive of what is quite literally one of the greatest feats in, not just league history but sports history & dare I say human history. It's also not as if that's LeBron's only argument in the discussion. On your side note, not only is that an in studio Jumbotron, the "studio" is a room in Gil's house. To your second point about addressing a "corner" of opinions in the sports discourse, I'd agree if people like Skip Bayless, Chris Brossard, & A lot of these old players weren't on National sports networks saying these things. It's not an obscure prospective to constantly hear standards that apply to today's players not apply to (specifically) early post-merger NBA players. Like have you ever heard anyone making a case for Bird being top 10? Like seriously, he's in EVERYONE's top 10 & no one ever has made a case for him. No one argues why he should or should not be there, Duncan, Kobe, Durant, even BRON & Russell aren't universally in the top 10 but Bird is & it's not even something that's ever talked about. Jalen Rose, ESPN analyst has Bird in his top 5, & not LeBron. Skip Bayless Fox Sports analyst has Bird above LeBron in his top 10. My last point, I don't personally think Pippen is salty, at the end of the day he & his ex have been divorced for like 3-4 years. It makes no sense imo for him to be upset at Jordan about that. I DO think he feels disrespected about the Last Dance but the first time people said he was salty wasn't the last dance it was Jordan's HOF speech, that's when Pippen started being pro LeBron but at the same time there was no GOAT debate then.

I think alot of ppl are missing the point.. it’s perception of what the media gives to public.. if the objective is to score the most points on any occasion scoring should be beneficial but the “hero ball/mamba mentality” are from the same tree. That’s why Kobe didn’t win any mvps those years when he was the best offensive player in the league n putting up those video game numbers. The narrative of him driving Shaq out.. and being a selfish gunner but we all kno the team wasn’t that good. Bron comes along n changes the narrative of what we think of as the best player having to be this Swiss Army knife type player.. Curry did it for the standard of all future shooting point guards.. Giannis ..joker… all these guys are look at as unselfish players now. That’s why it’s hard to compare different eras cuz they demanded different playstyles n mentalities to succeed.

To me, Scottie is either over or under rated. He could do a bit of everything, but he wasn’t an elite scorer. He wasn’t a perennial all star. He made a lot of all NBA teams, was probably the best wing defender of the 90s. He was a great passer, great at getting rebounds. He could get 20 plus a game, but he was best as a second or third option. Today he would probably play the 4. He’s on par with Kawhi Leonard to me. Leonard might be better on offense as he has a bag and is a better shooter.

6:24 Solz, bro.. he isn't talking about his MVP year. He's talking about the year after. Correct me if im wrong, but didnt Westbrook avg a TD for 3 seasons straight almost or something? And none of those years was his team top 3... So yes, 100% Westbrook's TD's were most Def was meaningless. Him avg a TD didn't contribute to anything in the playoffs
@tari8134
@tari8134 Жыл бұрын
But it's not meaningless. A player's entire career doesn't become meaningless if they don't win a championship. There's only so much 1 player can do to make that happen.

I agree with Gill tho, they definitely watered down the term “mamba mentality”. i guarantee if they met someone with actual mamba mentality then they would fucking hate that person 😂 now it’s some weak shit.

Shai better lucky he almost made the playoffs. Because if they were low in the west, as they are still susceptible to being, those numbers easily would’ve been empty stats. At least that’s what mfs would be saying.

Scotty needed to promote his book. So he bashing mj 😂 Longevity played a huge role for lebron in terms of stats. Its like karl malone or john stockton being considered a great scorer and great passer. But that doesnt make him the goat. Its still and always will be, mj. Theres a reason why they call you the mj of a certain field if youre the best.

Bron's longevity is the result of the work he continues to put in to his fitness and game, though. Jordan also could have lasted this long if he'd taken his health seriously.

@@herbertdaniel4422 it wasnt a thing back then. If it was, then mj would be playing just a long with more accolades. One can argue karl malone took better care of his fitness than lebron considering the times. The better comparison would be either give mj the same fitness as lebron or take away the same fitness to match mj.

@@Invader_Tim No, he wouldn't. MJ was also a physical freak when he first entered the league, but he drank and smoked and gambled every night. Even during the playoffs. He didn't really take care of himself like Bron does.
