I am always amused watching the reactor's face when this song starts. It starts with such a happy bouncy tune, then suddenly gets dark. It is such a beautifully, heartwrenching song.

I remember when "Alone Again (Naturally)" was a big hit. "Gilbert" O'Sullivan is an Irish singer-songwriter who had some great songs in the 1970's such as "Clair", "Get Down", "Nothing Rhymed", "We Will" etc.

My only claim to fame is that I was in the "Get Down" video when I was 10 or 11. It was filmed in Trafalgar Square.

The most upbeat,.. sad song you ever heard. If this one doesn’t move you,..nothing will. Gilbert is a great writer. He said in an interview that he merely put himself in the position of someone who felt this way. That is genius. Grand reaction Shawn.!!!😀🔥✌️

The song is not about his niece, the song is about Clair Mills the daughter of Gilbert's manager Gordon Mills.

O'Sullivan's manager at the time was Gordon Mills, who changed his first name to Gilbert; and who changed the names and also managed Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. 😊

This is definitely not the studio 45 rpm version that was played on AM radios constantly in the summer of 1972. But it's pretty close. Awesome song. This tune, and 'Day by Day" were huge radio hits in August 1972.

Other hits by Gilbert O'sullivan Happiness Is Me And You, Get down and Clair. Another great song about lost love or pleading about someone not leaving is believe it or not Wild cherry-Hold On (yes the Play That Funky Music band). The song Hold On was played constantly on the radio on Ohio stations in 1977-very soulful and good!!

Gilbert O'Sullivan was a great songwriter, he produced some brilliant stuff. His first hit was Nothing Rhymed, I really think you ought to do that one. He had a couple of number 1s, the best one is Claire, it's got a bit of a twist in it. There were half a dozen other hits in the early 70s too.

Remember this came out in a time when we weren’t really allowed to talk about depression or basically any mental health issues. We were told to buck up and get on with it ,. Instead we had music to let us feel. Of course if anyone saw weeping you would get the piss taking out of you for being stupid. This stuff was everywhere but we had to power through . If you ever wonder about how ornery older folks can be think about growing up like that. ☮️
