That is one of my favorite moments in all of D20. The crew just couldn't grasp that there was nothing special about him. "Why would you make such a cursed character" "HE'S NOT CURSED HE JUST A GUY!!!!!" Like, Brennan had been trying to get them to stop bringing him along to stuff, but I'm glad he leaned into him in later episodes.

I think that's what makes the character work. Because, especially in fantasy, this premise is often a starting point for any hero; Just some dude,, lived their life, then.... something happen, they discover magic, a dragon comes fucks their sister and doesn't call, whatever call to greatness, evil or good, but Gilear lives in the opposite end. He dealt in diplomacy, he basically balanced the scales between entire nations, then he hit hard times, and he just became... a guy, His story is basically an inversion of the trope, which occasionally align kinda butterflies back in occasionally and, most compellingly, realistically aligns with what a real hero is; Just a person who does their best, with what they got, for what they care about. Whether that be staying in the line of danger to help these kids do dope shit, having a heart to heart with their daughter, or putting himself on the line in only a way he can and later risking hanging dong in public. Gilear is just a guy, but he's a good guy.
