@@michellemooresings it's been a well-known story here on Long Island, but like most awful things - they tend to become far more important in the States and areas where they take place. In the Gilgo Beach murders, the remains were found spread out over an uninhabited tract of wild land on Fire Island (off the Coast of Long Island). So not really in any specific 'town'. There have been so many truly awful comments locally about the occupation of the young women victims which turn my stomach. I don't give a damn what they did: they're VICTIMS of a vicious MURDERER and that's all that matters to me, personally. They also deserve justice as much as anyone else's daughter would. Shannan Gilbert (whose mother kept up the pressure and is now dead - I believe she died at the hands of her other daughter more recently) was the impetus to find other remains. Another awful tragedy for that family. Shannan was eventually found in a marsh area but with no way to tell if she'd been murdered or drowned (at least, that's what we were told).

Just to let you know, if you are a psychopathic/sociopathic killer, you want to be able to blend right into your community. Often, these killers will be big church-goers, or volunteers doing some good for others so that no one will suspect they are who they REALLY are. There is a true crime series on Investigation ID channel called, "Evil Lives Here." The show always starts with the person closest to the serial killer/rapist & is narrated by them. Repeatedly!!! you find mostly women married to these men for decades and all the while they ALWAYS dismiss all the many red flags these serial killers exhibit! Even when the killers is caught, with solid proof, some women married to these killers, refuse to believe the man that nearly strangled them, or beat them up, or threatened to kill them is actually that serial killer the cops have been looking for in the area for years. Denial is a very strong emotion that some people refuse to give up no matter the proof. And most importantly, the killer KNOWS his wife will look the other way, out of fear, or ignorance.

How is it that there is absolutely no coverage of his wife or his 2 adult children. One of the podcasts mentioned finding one of the wife's hair connected to one of the bodies. What about the other bodies that were found? The toddler's body??? So many unanswered questions. It must rattle any serial killers who have thus far got away with it to see so many long-unsolved cases suddenly spark to life like this, with a suspect. I hope this guy was forever anxious after genetic genealogy came into play. Not sure it was used here, but he must have been looking over his shoulder after hearing about cases like the Golden State Killer being solved. Good. His wife’s hair was found inside the burlap around 2 of the victims. They did familial testing and it came back to her. He was already a suspect but they couldn’t link him until that. His wife was out of town and out of the country at the time of the murders. Poor woman…as bad as it is for her… maybe she finds some peace in knowing her DNA helped find him.

Actually, I'm from Ellenville & Shannon Gilbert was born & raised in Ellenville. Ellenville residents are still mourning her loss. In fact, my nephews went to Ellenville High School and knew Shannon Gilbert. To make matters worse, Shannon Glibert's mother was killed by her youngest daughter, who had mental problems that compounded this tragedy.
