Gill Net Cuts Deep into Seal's Head

We never know what to expect. We always hope for easy cut and release scenarios, but sometimes we have to deal with very painful and technical situations. First of all, gill nets are illegal in Namibian waters, and secondly, they're irresponsibly being discarded into the ocean. It was a huge relief to finally rescue this seal, but the entanglement shouldn't have happened in the first place! 🦭

This literally brought tears to my eyes seeing that poor pup suffer. Thankfully OCN is highly trained and patient to remove this horrible painful gill net. This may have been graphic, but the team did the right thing. So glad there was a documentary team on hand to spread the awareness of this problem. The poor pup would have perished if not for the removal of this horrible trash!

Out of all the graphic seal rescues I've seen this one is the most anxiety inducing because you can see how much the skin has grown over and how just trying to remove the net is causing more trauma and blood flow and pain. God bless these guys 🙏😇

I've probably watched well over a hundred of these rescues, and this is easily the worst injury I've seen thus far. While I feel for the poor seal's suffering, perhaps there's a silver lining here -- the documentary crew got to see the OCN team at its best, handling one of their most difficult cases with patience, persistence and professionalism. As always, great job!

I've watched every single one posted since over two years ago, when COVID hit. This is the bloodiest I've seen, also. Most debilitating injury might have been when a flipper was half sliced off or something like that, but this was definitely harrowing for the poor girl.

Definitely the bloodiest, not the worst injury though. She ran away strong looking like she'll be okay, while some others have limped away looking like skin and bones. But the sounds she was making were a unique anguish, I've never heard them make sounds like that before.

Poor, poor thing! It's hard to watch this, but a real reminder of why you do this-- because we see how badly gillnet can hurt a seal. I am SO glad you were able to help her. BTW, I have to say, I LOVE that you're using a Tunisian crochet hook to catch the fine netting. Any port in a storm, eh? But I hope she survives and recovers from this-- the salt in the ocean water will keep her free of infection, anyway. Thank God for small mercies. And thank God for you, OCN. She was trying so hard to hold still, even though she was in horrific pain. She knew you were trying to help her. This brought tears to my eyes. I don't know exactly what a gillnet is; I DO know that it is evil and cruel, as are the fishermen who use them. At least now she can heal, and get food. That poor seal was frightened, yet you could see how calm she became when she realized the humans were helping her rather than hurting her. Yes, we can all see where the wound was painful and she was wiggling to get free but she didnt attempt to bite. Bless you all in helping these animals.

Oh that must have been extremely painful. I cannot imagine how she lived with that pain every day. Now even though the wound is going to take time to heal the tight gill net is gone.
