That was a crazy cluster of rescues Team. The deep cuts on the seal with the cotton entanglement were horrendous. Also the overgrown fishing line is a huge problem so I'm pleased you found the tag. There were a couple of tiny pups in this cluster which is very worrying but at least you were able to get them fairly early. ❤ PS: Does Denzil have bionic vision as well as super human speed?! How he can see so many entanglements so quickly is freakish. ☮❤🦘🇦🇺

Cotton tread is very hard, when knitting or crocheting with it, it can burn the fingers after a day! It's kind of stiff, it doesn't stretch like wool, so I guess a seal with a strand of cotton around it's neck will have horrible wounds...

@Asherah 1147 -- you must not have seen too many of these rescues ... MOST of the time, the seals are caught in huge tangled balls of line that DON'T have fish, OR bait, in them ... seals are playful, and enjoy playing around with these discarded balls of line, often swimming through one or more loops, and the loops get stuck around their necks and chests and the seals can't get rid of them ... there've even been videos where, because of the entanglements, the seals can't feed as well, so they lose some weight, and the entanglement becomes loose, moves around, and becomes entangled AGAIN... hence the double wounds on some of the poor seals' necks

Of all the channels on KZbin, this one is: - the most interesting - the most exciting - the most uplifting. Thank you again, team members. ----- For the next version of nets, might there be value in having hand-hold-sized loops of webbing sewn along each edge of each zipper, i.e. one continuous length of woven webbing the full length of the zipper, securely sewn onto the zipper seam or the netting beside the zipper, with un-sewn hand-hold gaps somewhat wider than a man's hand. Team members could grasp the hand-holds and pull the sides of the zipper together, to facilitate re-closing the zipper, thus reducing mechanical stress on the slider unit and prolonging the life of the zipper. Also, when attempting to roll indignant seals over to expose the alternate zipper, team members could grasp the handholds and apply seal-rolling force. The attachment points of the notional hand-hold webbing would be subjected to high localized tensile forces which might tear the zipper strip or netting material. To avoid such damage, an additional continuous reinforcement webbing should perhaps be fully-sewn the full length of each zipper and the hand-hold webbing be sewn to the fully-sewn reinforcement webbing. The fully-sewn continuous reinforcement webbing would distribute the tensile loads along the length of the netting.
