Translation : My beloved lad
1. O I will sing a song to my beloved boy
Who came passing this way yesterday.
His eyes were warm and his countenance was cheerful
He is my treasure amongst the hundreds.
2. Although you are at this time so far from the land
Where once your ancestors lived
The Gael is in your heart and that won’t be extinguished
By anything but death.
3. Though the green branches have been scattered
That came from the people of the hills
The spirit is as it was, and will be for ever
Flowing through each generation.
4. Every flower of heather that is spread over this land
When it reaches the side of the mountains
The thoughts of the heart return willingly
To the time that was.
5. Farewell to thee for now my beloved lad
Return swiftly to us from the north
We shall welcome you warmly and with love
With warm hearts praising you.
