Nice to see you back Oddie! Excellent presentation, as always. I have read about Gilles de Rais and to this day, the historical consensus is tending toward his innocence. Indeed, why would his corpse be bathed after its destruction, and young women keep his body's fragments as keepsakes--almost like holy relics--if his contemporaries believed him of such monstrosities? I'm glad you've reintroduced this subject, as the mystery remains relevant today.

I had always questioned the idea of the Bluebeard side of Gilles De Rais. He never seemed like the type, especially with his care for someone like Joann D'Arc. He actually saved her on several occasions, and I'd also suspect that he pretty well retired and was most likely broken with the betrayal towards his fellow countryman and her ultimate death as a false sacrifice. Also, if we look at some of these older documents about several men and women who were considered terrible creatures or abominations were often used as a means to an end. Also, the fact that we have several other people attached to the supposed "crimes" that are well-known con artists. All suspicious to me.

In spite of the possibility of forced confessions, I think there’s too much specificity about the details of the crimes, and separate witness account uniformity, for it to be a complete fiction. That’s just my opinion though

Excellent video, Oddie👏 Whether he was guilty or not🤔 I would first look at who would gain the most from his death. Occultism and alchemy was being practised actively at that time and much if it was banned by the Catholic church, but knowing today that monsters often hide in a cardinals clothing...then there is also why people did not throw things at him when he was being executed. Usually the people would throw discusting things when one was truly guilty. He was with Joan of Arc in battles against the English and he was definitely being hated by the English for that. As far as confessions...they would torture people in most brutal ways until they either sign and (falcly) confess or continue the torture untill very slow and very painful death.

Well, those were fairly terrifying descriptions of torture and death. I was going to stop listening and I'm happy to have continued because I had forgotten that you have explanations at the end. There is always a thorough recounting of events. I would say that the Catholic Church is far more horrifying than we think under the secrecy of their ''holiness''. In Canada, we are well aware of what they did to native children. Thank-you and take care. 🙂

Every time I had to watch a video saying that anyone who follows any other religion is going to "the bad place", my animosity grew. I don't know how I feel about the baron. He confessed to the horrible crimes but only after being threatened to be excommunicated from the Catholic church and the country of France. That is a threat that no mortal man at the time would be able to tolerate. And there's another reason he confessed. If he confessed and died repented the law said that most of the wealthy Left behind would go to his family. If he did not confess and repent then the country and the Catholic church and other powerful groups would have took everything. I think at this time he knew his life was 450 anyway and the only thing he could do was make sure his family received some of his money. Although the Catholic church in the Duke got most of his land of his family got the money and suffered no ill effects of his alleged crimes. It is said that he was buried in secret. That is interesting back then witches were burned they were not buried on church grounds. Although there's no proof that he was buried the evidence circumstantially is there that he was buried. What would that prove if it was found out he was buried well that would prove the charges against him would have been made up otherwise he would not be allowed to be buried. As far as I know not a single bone fragment or anything was ever found on any of his properties. Even if he burned the bodies bone fragments would be there and they would be easy to find. I think they accused him of sorcery and communion with the devil. Say he wanted peace but there's no money in peace. So his in-laws were angry at him for that and they were also angry of his spend crazy ways even though it was his money to spend however he pleased. It was not family money they were very wealthy themselves but this was his own money and he was it was said more wealthy than the king of France. It was said he participated in homosexual activities. Although today homosexual activities are thought to be inconsequential in his day it was considered an abomination to also in those days there was no such thing as a gay man that was what was called homosexual activities.

@morbidmorag6 ай бұрын
Where is the evidence that any crime was committed? The testimony is either hearsay or extracted by torture. There is no indication that any more children went missing than you might expect, or that Gilles or his household were connected with them. There was no forensic proof, which is odd given that he supposedly collected severed heads.

I think there are good arguments for both guilty and innocent. They say that “money is the root of all evil”. he was really obsessed with getting gold. But at the same time, I don’t think he would have done it for favor with Satan. He didn’t want to be excommunicated from the church!! So I’m kinda leaning on the innocent side, and I agree the Catholic Church has always been one all about the money and power. It was clear they wanted his lands and castles!! The peasants knew he was framed for the crimes of murder. He was finally found innocent centuries later. By the way nice pronunciation of the French names, I wouldn’t even begin to attempt it!! LOL. @@morbidmorag I read that book, in the 70s, I only have vague memories but it was my first introduction to Gilles and that the Beast of Jersey, claimed some connection to him. It was a very strange book.

Great video. What films did you show clips of?

Very glad you enjoyed it! I made this video over two years ago, so I cannot remember the film name - but I believe it was only in French. If you have a look on Google with the search ‘Gilles de Rais full film’ - I’m sure you’ll find it.

I guess we can’t really know what happened with absolute certainty, it was just too long ago…but as with Elizabeth Bathory, I think the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Regards testimonies, I can very much imagine people being too frightened to legally report or go on the record with their witness accounts, because of the fear of retribution. Even if a new landowner came on the scene, there’d be that fear you’d be marked as a troublemaker. Our rights were just non existent. These terrible things happen and I bet they happened back then too. I don’t find it that hard to believe, given what horrors we’ve learned were common with the religious persecutions of the times. I often think, shudderingly, imagine if Ted Bundy or Richard Ramirez were wealthy, important figures way back then, with all the power and privilege inherent in that. Terrifying. Excellent programme Oddie and I do hope you’re feeling much better! What a shock! Please take care, won’t you? God bless ❤️

"We can't really know what happened" is a bit of a cop-out, isn't it? We can't know from online pages & videos & poor-quality books, certainly. But if you can be bothered to go through the trial record, taking careful note of anything that's contradictory or impossible or highly unlikely, & then study the politics - then you get a damn good idea. Start with the fact that Gilles de Rais was THE French war hero, after Jehanne, & was on trial in Brittany (not France) which inclined to the English side & signed a treaty with England halfway through the trial. Another thing that tends not to get mentioned is that Jean V LOATHED the Lavals (Gilles' family) - at one point he dismissed all his cooks because he was convinced the Lavals had suborned them into a poison plot.

Hello there, I’m impressed by your work on this video. The innocence or guilt of Gilles de Rais may never truly be known. If he was, indeed, committing these atrocities upon children, then I believe that he would have been accused much earlier. Especially since the accusers stood to gain from his defamation and death. So, why wait so long? I’m no historian, but this many children disappearing from areas around his property is surely going to raise some questions. Elizabeth Bathory was caught because she began taking girls of minor nobles. How then, could he not have been exposed as a child murderer if nobles were being warned to protect their children from him? Many murderers go years without being caught and punished. I feel that it’s because they seldom kill famous or wealthy persons children. It is also unusual for a killer to be famous or wealthy, though it certainly does happen from time to time. The rich can afford the best legal teams to protect themselves from prosecution. As for his service with Joan of Arc, he was appointed to guard her and that’s what he did. His overly lavish lifestyle was likely the reason why he was charged. The family needed to stop him before he lost everything and they wouldn’t get any of his estates. Greed is a powerful motive. He “confessed” to horrific crimes because he knew he would be tortured and killed anyway. The confession was to avoid torture. The actions of the people who witnessed his execution is very telling. They prayed for him instead of pelting him with stones or offal. Had he committed such acts against children, they would not have been kind. Of course, it’s just my opinion and changes nothing. The subject is fascinating and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤
