A enduring mystery has been handed down to us through the decades.
On January 2, 1935. a man checked into room 1046 of the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri under the name of Roland T. Owen, it soon became clear that even his name was a fabrication. In just two days' time, he would be dead.
Hotel staff later observed that the mystery man was acting strange from the moment he arrived. Whenever maids or porters went up to his room, they always found it dark, with the shades drawn and a single desk lamp providing the only illumination.
When he was discovered in his room, he was already dying from injuries sustained in what was obviously a brutal attack. The question was: Who killed Roland T. Owen, and why? But the man known as Roland T. Owen brought with him more mysteries than answers. Who was Roland T. Owen and what did he do to deserve torture and a brutal death? We may never know all the answers, but the pieces of the puzzle are as haunting as any solution could ever be.

Some of the topics discussed on the 'blah blah' towards the end of video, because of the upload date, may no longer be relevant. (these videos reach KZbin two years after publication on Patreon) Some videos are classed as graphic in content by KZbin, (which is quite frankly baffling, but no surprise with today's culture)...and will most certainly be demonetised by KZbin; nevertheless, thanks to my loyal Patreon patrons, I will eventually post them here too despite KZbin's policy. Link to my Patreon page and other sites under the description :)

I’m right in there with ya on affordable entertainment. Plus, I refuse to go to a ‘walk-in sit-down’ movie theater because of concern about bedbugs. So, until drive-in movies come back, I watch KZbin. And I love “Oddie”. I been following his channel for quite some time. I love his postings for several reasons, but mostly because he lives up to his name by posting videos about, well, ‘odd’ things/subjects. 😄😄

@mirandagoldstine8548
@mirandagoldstine8548 8 ай бұрын
To me it feels more like an abusive relationship that resulted in death. Of course that is just my point of view with the fact of the victim’s reluctance to name names. Back then it was a very dangerous time to identify as a gay man. If his partner was a prominent member of society and this person, Don or Mr. X, was physically and mentally abusing him “Artemus” might have decided that he was going to tell “Don”’s spouse the truth only this cost him his life. Perhaps, clinging onto some remnant of affection and also a large amount of fear and worry that “Don” wouldn’t face his just desserts, “Artemus” might have not told the police his attacker’s name knowing that he, as a person who might have identified as not fitting in the “norm”, would have his name smeared and his family’s reputation ruined. Gods this makes me so mad. And what’s worse is that according to BuzzFeed Unsolved, in the early 2000s, a journalist got an anonymous call from a person who said they found documents relating to the case and yet they never came forward with more information. This is why I think the case is tied to a prominent family. Someone has wanted to keep the truth a secret for a long time. But here’s something, in the end, Forseti, the god of justice, will reveal the truth and then the killer’s spirit will be punished. Don’t mind rambling this case just makes my blood boil.

@@mirandagoldstine8548 this was my thought as well. It was quite common during this time for male sex workers to rough up their johns, or for men to pretend to be gay and best up men who picked them up. Or you're right, it could have just been a relationship with the wrong person.....

What a strange story! My first thought was maybe S&M games gone too far. Surely someone would have heard groans or a person in pain at some point. The person who was in the room with him didnt want to be seen or heard. Obviously he didn't want anyone to know anything either. Fake names .....he was running from something this is for sure. And sending money to the funeral home and a supposed love note. It was probably code for something that the job was done or whatever message was to be sent. The person to receive the message would only know. Certainly a case for the record books. Great as always!!

I think you are right about possible involvement with the mafia. I'm from this area. Back in this time period, this area was saturated with mafia. I do find it surprising that this guy would have even checked into the other hotel, the one that starts with an M. That hotel housed many Presidents when they were in town. Presidents and celebrities. And, well the mafia were given free ride here because their boss ran the government. I'll put it to you this way...there was not one arrest during the entire alcohol prohibition in these city limits. The secrecy behind this also speaks volumes.

Good morning friend! I do hope you and Oddette are well and happy! This was a very strange one! I kinda think Mafia as well. At first I was thinking spy but soon agreed with your surmised idea due to the torture of this man! The funeral arrangements were ‘odd’ Someone knew more about this and informed the wife? Or that was just a BS ploy. You’d think after some time had gone by the truth would have come out. Thanks so much Oddie I’ve missed your content! It must take you Days on end to produce these amazingly graphic ( I don’t mean violent) videos! Your olde photos and newspaper clippings always add so much to a story. Hi 👋🏻 Oddie (& Oddette & fam). I’m still here. I’ve switched to a laptop recently, though I still have my phone. I need to sign into hubby’s Patreon of your channel again, as I’ve likely missed some content. I tend to still rewatch the older content when released on YT, as well, though. I remember this case & it definitely is a head scratcher. So much involved. Feels mob related, even if boxing or wrestling could have been part of it. People fixed matches al the time for profit. Some by winning, some by losing. Perhaps Don was a manager to him but could also be a mob contact. Could also be the culprit or one who ratted him out & got him whacked. I wonder though, if they were unable to finish the job because of the hotel employees? Mob doesn’t usually let you live when teaching a lesson or for double crossing. And what was that vial of unused acid in the room supposed to be for? Maybe dissolving the victim’s fingerprints on his hand or something? So he wouldn’t be identified? They definitely meant to finish him off, I think, but we’re unable to by interruption. Why else have the acid and removing all clothes & personal items of the victim. Maybe Louise was in a mobster’s family & loved him though he did something wrong. Possibly cheating, whether on her or with her? Or they were in a relationship but he messed over her family at large (mob) in some way (could be not conforming to a match set up in boxing/wrestling or as some kinda muscle for them failing to do what was required?). Out of love of this family member, Louise, perhaps the funeral got paid for, even if it was their mob that offed him. She was family, after all & his final dues got paid, so they wanted to lessen her suffering in some small way. It seems most plausible regarding him hiding his identity at 2 different hotels & keeping “mum” on who did everything to him. Especially if he cared for Louise & didn’t want to hurt her by having it lead to her family. He might have even thought he’d live through it and so didn’t want to be a rat. I wonder if there’s any progress in the case by now? Have you checked? I’m hopeful, since many older cases are being solved these days like the Aussie lad on the beach in s suit that was thought long time have been a spy, but was just unhappy in life and marriage. And the poor boy in a box. There might be more on his story in the future, but I think there were family members that were still living, so too much wasn’t released publicly yet. If this man here was cremated, there’d be no DNA available, but it was mentioned he was buried. If we’ve wrangled older samples, it’s still possible they could get some from his bones and could compare to living descendants in the Ogletree family or just other ancestral hits in large databases to see if there’s familial matches to narrow down or confirm the claims. The first step to figuring out what happened is identifying him. I hope it happens. I was very glad to have lived to see the other cases I mentioned get solved to some satisfaction. There are always more long-standing mysteries I would love to find out about. Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Hoffa, lookin at you! Kidding I doubt we’ll find out truth on those fronts. More hopeful for info on the former than the latter ever coming to light. Love ya, Oddie & will check in on Patreon soon.

Well, thank you so much for your kind feedback, Lora and your very interesting insights. Yes, I remembered you’re telling me that you had a new laptop, can’t you just download the Patreon app onto that? Yes, there hasn’t been an attempt to recover DNA from his remains, if there’s any left. I guess there’s just not enough interest in the case to get things going. Plus, maybe they feel that he was identified by the woman who said she was his mother? You’re right, if they can identify the poor baby in the box, I’m sure they could identify this guy. Would that bring us any closer to solving the mystery?! Hope you have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

Oddie, I just love your channel and vintage crime stuff! Your voice is nice and clear, and you are always polite when speaking to your fans. Which is much appreciated. Plus, I agree with some other commenters here that the lady named "Louise" was probably a code name. Not her real name. My best guess is that she truly cared for Artemus Ogletree and wanted to see him buried properly since she paid for the funeral and sent flowers. Possibly this "Louise" was a mobster moll. But really loved Artemus but when the bigwig found out he had poor Artemus killed. But who knows. Baffling case indeed!

I agree with the mafia theory. For both hotels he had different names and acted as if in hiding. He had a cauliflower ear and at that time, boxing was SO popular and very much run by the mob. I think he got mad during a fight and either did not win ior did not throw it the way he was supposed to. I think that’s why they were after him. I think the girl was used to lure him out for them to find him. Of course I have no idea. It’s just a theory.

Oddie, that was a fantastically presented story! I agree due to the brutality I would think it is mob related. I doubt a pimp would go that far because I think he would say or do something like give him a day to come up with the money, unless he was a total psycho that thrived on violence. I also doubt a family member of a wronged female would go to those lengths. I really loved the whole pictorial presentation as well. Especially the cat😊 and the rain outside that dismal looking room and those depressing bare windows. I just thought this was a masterpiece of your always great work and I thank you for it.

I agree that there must have been some “mob” involvement in this murder. He either knew too much, or ratted on someone. He checked into the hotel with no luggage, only small items you could “grab and go” if needed. How did he pay for the room? He was only 17 at the time according to the woman who claimed to be his mother. You didn’t have a lot of money during the 30’s. So where did he earn that money? He obviously couldn’t have a job with him being as paranoid as he was in his room. He had to have been on the run since he was 15 1/2 to 16 according to his mother. I think he was locked in the room because they either found him and wanted to kill him later, or maybe the screaming and yelling was from the person who had been looking for him. Great story, got my brain cells working!’ Can’t wait until the next one!! Much love

Layla, I agree about Mob/Mafia involvement or very dangerous people. My best guess is Artemus Ogletree threw a boxing or wrestling match he was supposed to win or lose, and they wanted payback. Or he was secretly dating a gangster moll. And unfortunately for him the mobsters found out about the affair, and he became a marked man.

I would offer the suggestions for future segments on two interesting Kansas city women. First is Nelly Donnelly. She occupies an interesting part of Kansas History, contemporary to the time of this murder. She definitely had mob ties and was a force in the fashion industry in the early 20th century with her Nelly Don fashions. Another interesting Kansas Citian is Anne Chambers. She was a well know local wealthy madame who at the end of her days gave her fortune to the City Union Mission.

Wow... What an interesting case! I agree, the sheer brutality is not indicidive of an angry dad, brother, or any relative. Blood on the ceiling and walls is not normal, that takes a lot of force. He could have all the same injuries without the excessive splatter. This seems to me much more like a mob hit, but a personal one. Even the mob doesn't usually leave a mess that extensive. Furthermore, I'm impressed that he managed to invent not one but TWO names that no law enforcement could find any evidence of ever existing. I suppose he had almost 100 years worth of names less than we do. But still it's impressive that the names sound legit but didn't really exist. So much about this is fascinating! Thanks for another head scratcher, my friend. 🙂💙 Edit: typos

So, here's my take on the case: The victim had been involved with criminal activity along with someone he deeply cared about. The victim was on the run separately from the other so as to protect the other individual from "the mob" or some kind of criminal organization (maybe Hillary Clinton's Grandmother 😁). Once they found him, they tortured him to tell where the other was (and possibly a lot of money). Naturally, even though he was tortured severely, he did not divulge the info desired. He also refused to tell Police who had beat him even while dying because he thought his killers would be found by Police and then eventually lead them to the other missing person(s) AND the money! Protecting his love at ALL costs.

I have often wondered about this case. There is obviously no way this man beat himself up trying to commit suicide. I have thought that perhaps he was gay and met with someone who took advantage of him and that’s why he would not say who hurt him. Just so mysterious!

Hi Oddie, very interesting case to be sure. There seems to be a dichotomy in this situation. An individual stays at 2 different hotels with no personal possessions and obviously in hiding. He gives false names, as if trying to lay a false trail. He is later heard in argument with a man then a woman. Even when mortally wounded, he gives no absolute information to anyone. Secondly, there is his initial appearance when checking and then later. He is described by the clerk as having a scar on his hairline and a cauliflower ear. I am wondering whether he was previously a boxer. Later, he is seen outside the hotel with a bleeding cut on his arm, still not seeking medical attention or giving details. The reports of arguments first with a gruff man and later with a woman in his hotel room indicates he was visited but no-one remembers seeing these people. He was finally found, bound hand and foot, skull bashed in and stabbed. The room was swept clean of all items of clothing and toiletries. He still refused to name his attacker. My theory is that he was involved with the mafia or another illegal fighting organization. He could not name his attackers because he was protecting someone he cared about. I agree that he probably threw a fight and the people in charge were furious because he cost them money. He was tortured to try to get the name of the person who had him throw the fight. He had already been tortured by the time he verbally fought with the woman, she tried persuasion and then probably was the one who did the stabbing. The gruff man is the one who cut him, followed him back to his room and bashed his head in and tied him down. Both the man and woman were his killers. The funeral and roses were paid for by the person he was protecting. American Beauty roses are bright red. This person cared about this man but took measures not to be identified by anyone looking. Sister Louise is a code name. Jane Owen could have been connected. Her testimony is suspect. The woman who claimed he was her son might have been telling the truth, but 1935 didn’t have DNA testing available. In the end, he died alone probably because of a fixed fight. It’s a shame. ❤

Nana Bren, I agree with your thoughts! Artemus Ogletree had a cauliflower ear so he probably was a boxer or wrestler and may have thrown or won a fight he wasn't supposed to, and mobsters dealt with him. Or he was going out with a lovely mob moll, and they dealt with him? I think something like that.
@BrendaPenepent
@BrendaPenepent 8 ай бұрын
Chrissy, I also thought about the mob moll theory. They don’t have a sense of humor about that stuff. My husband’s great uncle Anthony was killed by the Sicilian family. He tried to save his brother in law, so they were both killed. I actually have a picture of his headstone.

His lover was Dan who he met at school perhaps. He tried to break it off seeing how homosexuality was a criminal offense at the time. He was going to return to his wife Louise and was there to break it off under the guise of a tryst. One day turns into two and then longer. Their relationship is passionate but forbidden, that’s why the curtains are kept closed and all the secretive hiding. His wife growing impatient for his return shows up at the hotel and Dan is livid when she announces his plans to cut their relationship off. She walks away leaving her mysterious husband to finish the breakup. Instead embraced, jealous, jilted and enraged Dan beats him senseless and slashes him with a razor. He hadn’t even had time to get dressed everything had happened so quickly. Dan escaped into the night and Louise, embarrassing and ashamed went home never reported his transgressions or claimed his body.

It has something to do with the woman. Her connections didn't set well with the people she was involved with. I would say someone in a government position was involved as well. At least the cover up part. The underworld, as I call it, is one NOT to tick off. Why they tortured him is another all in itself. Someone wanted to make a point.
@mirandagoldstine8548
@mirandagoldstine8548 7 ай бұрын
I have a theory on this case which I have mentioned in two other posts on this video. I do think the killer had connections which would explain the victim’s reluctance to name names. I think Louise was a close friend, maybe a person who gave Roland/Artemus/whoever the victim was the courage to get out of a toxic situation, possibly a hooker with a heart of gold, and he unfortunately paid the price with his life. The fact 13 roses mean eternal friendship in some interpretations indicates that Louise might have felt a bit of guilt over her advice being the cause of the victim’s demise. I think we need to look at the prominent families who were active in that area at that time and see if any of them had connections to Kansas City or else its seedy side.

I have a similar theory as you. I personally think he was in a rather abusive “relationship” with an older man who would constantly beat up “Artemus” (as evident by the cauliflower ear which can be indicative of physical abuse) and then lure him back with honeyed promises of changing. My theory is that Artemus’ “lover” was a person with a bit of power and money who did not want his secret that he was in a same sex relationship public. However something changed, what that catalyst was, I don’t know, but I think “Artemus” finally had enough of the abusive behavior of his “partner” and told him that he was cutting all ties with him. The older man, Don, panicked and in a fit of rage and desire to keep his secret hidden attacked “Artemus” to the point of fatality. “Artemus” didn’t dare tell police his “lover’s” name as he probably knew Don would likely never face justice due to his connections and he, the victim, would end up in jail on convictions of sodomy due to the rampant homophobia in 1930s America. Louise was probably a friend who encouraged him to break ties with Don while Don, perhaps having a guilty conscience, secretly arranged for his ex “boyfriend’s” burial hence the anonymous phone call. Unfortunately I don’t have the evidence to back up this theory, only my knowledge of 1930s America and domestic violence as gleaned from watching multiple forensic shows. However there is a tidbit that might support my theory. Apparently according to the BuzzFeed Unsolved video on the case in the early 2000s there was an anonymous phone to the Kansas City Library from someone outside the state. The caller mentioned that they had been working on creating an inventory of a recently deceased person’s possessions when they stumbled upon a box filled with newspaper clippings relating to this case and an item mentioned in the articles. However the caller never identified themselves nor who owned the box. Who the person was who collected the items could be an important key in resolving the case. Well that and confirming the identity of “Artemus”
