Awesome upload. This is my first year gill-netting out of Chatham and it is, without question, the best job I have ever had in my life. Even though the fishery has been reduced to skate and dogfish, it is still amazing. I wish the season lasted all year. As Masefield said: "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by [...]" One's pure, unsullied self arises while you are on watch and both the Atlantic and the stoic rumble of the diesel are your only interlocutors. The point from which you view the world shifts; it ceases to be a point and instead becomes the sheet of paper upon which the point was marked. Your walls dissolve. It's incredible. I feel like I have finally found my dream job. I finally understand why my father has devoted his entire life to the briny blue. Sure, the work is exhausting and the hours erratic, but the rewards (physical, spiritual, and monetary) outweigh any negatives by a long-shot. Again, great upload. Thank you very much.

@@danielbloomer1095 I fished on the Mobster for a few years and now I fill in when needed on the Anne Marie. My back took me out of the game (2 surgeries). I can only do short runs now.

My first time of seeing a video how gill netting is done. You hard working fishers really show how its done and you should be proud. A great well put together video thanks. This is a post three year ago video I sure hope that the fishing is still good.

Good vid. I gill netted hake in the Northumberland Strait for many years. Nice selective fishery. We fished shallower, about 20 fathoms, and used drum rollers, (net reels We had about 60% hake, 20% cod and the rest a few pollack and Winter flounder.)

Good vid. I worked on a forty footer (day tripper) for couple three years back in the early 90,s. The very first day in February out of Portland Maine, as a greenhorn, was a flesh pick of redfish and only a couple totes of good reds and a couple more of cod and Pollock. I says to the capt , " you gotta be kiddin', this is how you make a living, this is a joke, right?" He laughed out loud and said, " hang tight, that was the first set( up inside) and it was a 4 day set". I says to may pal on deck, who got me the job, " Allen, this don't seem good. We just hauled gear up that was like 20 miles long only to get 4 totes and they are not even half full, and I do all the flaking and my face is burning with jellyfish from the net." It was so ephin cold and I dreamed that night that all of my fingers had been frozen off! Then we went to Jefferies ledge for the other three 20 ephin miles of net. It was not much more of a catch, by any means. We did get lots of spider crabs and cappy split 'em up for the 3 of us. They are really good. After awhile I became sea-legged and never sick once. The winter was awful but the next day on a one night set, we got fish that didn't have slime eels inside and I felt much better about the flesh pick issue. Later on, I got my cousin on the boat and since I'm a fun person, I took some carbon from the coleman stove pan and applied to binoculars with my finger, then I told Jerry (cousin) to check whats that with the binos. He did and when we got back to unloading fish, the gang on the pier laughed like mad! One day I didn't go on the day trip and Jerry put a sharks head on my back porch. The wife was furious, so I took the head to Jerrys house, put it in his truck box that was leaning against a tree in the back yard. Two weeks later, I went over and he was pissed. He said , you owe me the cost of the box, the maggots were just spilling out and it is ruined. I laughed and said, you shouldn't have scared my wife. ( I wish now she were eaten by the shark). So a year or so later, the cappy said, in a concerning tone, " get the 5 gal anti freeze, we need it now." I got the bucket and took a hammer n knife to get the cover off quickly, I didn't mess with the individual tabs and I sunk the knife in deep. The bucket poured into the large funnel and the motor was saved! Next day, the cappy used that same bucket as a sitdowner and came back to the wheelhouse very upset. He got pinched in about twelve spots and we laughed like hell. He tried to blame, but the source I blamed on Jerry and we rolled with laughter. My blog, I guess. I had great fun on the job and we caught so many dogs and two by fours (bluefish) once that it sucked. Once or twice we got a shark that twisted the net and in was an hour to get the twist out, let alone a 40ft basking shark where we spent four nets and twisted miles of net for two freakin hours. I enjoyed the experience and my share was not bad for the years when they started to limit the catch, of course the cap got more share. I went fishing with a pal on 26 ft Mako to Jefferies and goT CODFISH WORMED UP HEAVY summer time worms :) I picked around 55 worms out by tweezers and fluorescent light. Pollock has no worms but the cod is riddled with 'em. Monkfish (goosefish) is great in seafood chowder but my bro sends me halibut fro Kodiak and is the best fish by far. Cheers, thanks for having me.

Do you still need twesers to get the little worm out or has he grown now? Does he grow when he gets excited? Do you ever just dangle him out to see if you get any bites?
