Includes underwater footage from a moving school of dogfish and rare historic film from a 1922 longlining trip to George's Bank on the schooner Columbia.

Wow, how cool is this? 2 yrs ago, they shut down flounder in NC. I started doing this same thing for catfish. After a year of every fisherman I knew laughing at me everyday, they came to ask how it was done. Two years later, everybody has lines. I've heard estimates of over one million hooks around the sound here. I surly didn't invent this, but it is a miracle to see so many still be able to make a living fishing. Everything this man said in this video is exactly how I feel and look at things. Guess fisherman are all about the same no matter where in the world you are. Great video. I'm surprised he doesn't simply have two sets of rollers, a set of wide and narrow ones, allowing the fish to come in the wide ones and the narrow ones dehooking them, you'd think just running the longline through that would work fine and have a table to sort them.

Nuss, huss, rock salmon, rock eel and numerous other names these will be known by in the UK fish shops. But Spurdog is their "proper" name over here. When I used to work on a local liner, with no hydraulic hauler, it would seem that after a whole winter of fishing for cod with no mishaps regarding shooting the lines without a whole bath of them going over in one heap, we'd then be faced with spurdog as spring approached and you could almost guarantee that at least once that spring, some of the baited hooks would shift and end up taking a whole bath of hooks over the side in one big mess. Of course the real pain came when hauling the lines back in. If you had found the dogs, you would have the ugliest heap of fish, line and rope imaginable and if their spurs managed to find your leg or arm, you would have a hole that would seem to take forever to heal up. Sadly though, the local fishing around here has been hammered to death. Where once a couple of dozen local registered boats plied their trade locally, there are now only 2 or 3 and they seem to spend more time working either ashore or for the likes of dredging companies or those employed in the wind farms, which much of the sand banks locally have been turned into. I hope this guy and those he works around manage to keep going and stay safe too.

then dogfish met the same fate as cod in 1998 but it came "back" in 2010. Vicious cycle.

It does indeed merit long term study, considering the long gestation period for dogfish, as the captain says here.
