G'Day Gil, I'm from Western Australia & I'm very new to lasers. Recently I purchased a Creality Falcon CR 10W laser unit & now I'm in the process of trying to find out what settings I need to have set in Lightburn to be able to engrave on stainless steel & Aluminum. I am hopefully going to work out about how to place the keyring (or other items) in the right location to be able to engrave it the right place. Fingers crossed I will find a tutorial to help me with this. I really enjoyed watching your tutorial & I look forward to watching & learning more. 😃

Hi Sharon, Engraving on stainless steel and aluminum with your Creality Falcon CR 10W requires experimenting with power, speed, and frequency settings in LightBurn, and using the 'Preview' feature for accurate positioning. Start with lower settings and adjust based on your results, and consider using jigs for consistent placement of items like keyrings. What projects are you planning to work on with your new laser unit?

2 question's if you will. 1, what wattage of lazer was you using that it didn't fry all that paper? And 2 i have seen lots of reviews on all the brands of lasers and all but one person does there tests up to 100 percent power . The reason I asked is because I have read from the manufacturer not to use 100 percent power because it weakness the lazer fast so why not stop the test at 80 or 90 percent power And I want to thank you very much for your time and effort you put into your videos and I will subscribe. Thank you again.
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream Жыл бұрын
Welcome aboard. Glad you found us. Try to answer your questions. 1. I use mainly a 5-watt and 10-watt laser for my tutorials. Power is not the issue when cutting paper, but speed, power and focus. Understand how to get the correct settings, and you can cut paper with a 100-watt laser without burning it up. 2. There is a lot of information around, and the 100% power subject is one that always gets comments :) Ultimately, I'm sharing what works for me; use as much or as little as you feel comfortable. Laser sources are consumable, and while you want to get the most out of them, heat and cooling are critical to getting the most out of your sources. Many people who run CO2 lasers won't go past 80%; diode laser users hear this and adopted the same practice. In the end, my experience is you get what you pay for. If your laser has a well-designed cooling system for its laser source, there is no reason why you can not use your laser at 100% with the proper settings (this tutorial is one way to work out what works with your laser specs) and get to your next job quicker. That shared, always do what you are comfortable with, and if that's not passing 80% on your power setting, that is OK with me. 👍 In the end, be safe, make something amazing and have fun.

I just came across your channel, so thankful for it! I recently purchased an 80watt co2 OMTech laser. It came with a chart of cut settings for different material. But I have come to see that it’s not very descriptive. So from what I’m getting from the video is you test this pattern on each material. So now if you want that certain shade on material you enter in that percent and remain at the speed correct? And lastly, is there a video on locating placement of material on laser bed without wasting so much time guessing and moving laser to material and running frame option a hundred times?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dianne, glad you found us. I personally always test the martial I use. Every settings chart should be used as a place to start when working out your settings. After all, not all materials are created equal. Run the test that gives you the best shading range and use those setting when running your engraving job. As for working out placement, keep your eyes on the channel, we will have something coming soon. :) Also, join us on the Facebook group! Link is in the description.

You know what? I've always hated people writing on the tabs of folders, or even trying to print the labels and watching them fall off. What an awesome way to make everything look uniform and permanent. Thank you. One of my lasers now has a new life purpose. I own 3. A 10 Watt Ortur, a 20 Watt FoxAlien, and very soon, it's on order, is an OmTech 60 Watt CO2. The Ortur is my enemy, the FoxAlien isn't well made. The Ortur may become my new label maker for file folders.

That's a great idea David! I use the folders cause they are fast and cheap. They also don't have a lot of latitude if you make a mistake, so if you can master the test on a folder, you will almost always get a better result on the material your using!

I have heard that running at 100% will degrade your laser too fast. What’s your view? Love your videos!
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I don't know what laser you are using (Co2/Diode) or what model you are running. While you are correct that if you run your laser at 100% will push your laser components harder than what you would like, the companies that I have worked with actually set their default under 100%. So it's totally your choice. You can set your power to less than 100% if you want, or do so. Either way, your laser source is consumable and over time, it will lose output power. I always try to show my method and ideas, including the mistakes that are commonly made when learning a new process. Let me know if that makes sense :)

I am doing this to make a little extra money since my medications and my disability id not as cheap as one would think with the help of my SS and Medicare lol. Great question Guillaume. For me it is a personal choice but I find that by turning off air assist, the particles of paint are not blown all over my laser meaning I need to clean it more often. As the tile is not being cut, air assist is not really needed. It wont hurt to have it on, but I choose not to use it with when engraving a tile. Hope that explains my thinking. What is the laser power required to engrave using the Norton method. My blue laser has a maximum laser output of 1.8 watts. Tried running it at max power and various speeds but no success. Maybe i need a 5 watt laser.
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
Have you run the engrave test used in the tutorial? I suggest that if you are not getting a result, check your laser focus. If that doesn't improve your results, try slowing down the speed in increments till you start seeing the engraving. Let me know how you go! You should be able to get a result even with your 1.8 watt laser. Worst case, you may need a second pass!

When I do a raster image, th edges burn too dark. How can I turn the laser off when it changes direction? Thanks!!
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 9 ай бұрын
To prevent dark edges in raster engraving with LightBurn, use the 'Overscanning' feature. This allows the laser to move past the image's edges before changing direction, turning off the laser momentarily to avoid excess burning. Adjust the overscan percentage in the 'Cut Settings Editor' under your image layer settings. A good starting point is around 5-10% of the image's width, but you may need to experiment to find the perfect balance for your specific laser. Have you tried adjusting the overscan settings before, and how did it affect your engraving results?

I think you are talking about the materials library within Lightburn. I have a video on setting it up. It is a place for you to keep settings for material that works with your laser. Each laser is different.

Hi....I'm just starting out. I can't seem to get my images to appear. It's so light. Can you please let me know what I'm doing wrong with the power and speed?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know what type of laser you have, but i would start by slowing down your speed and seeing what happens. Try dropping the speed 25% but keep an eye on your material, you don’t want to start a fire. If your engraving is still light, check your focus. Let me know how you go…

what would be the best settings for laser engravings on clear acrylic engraving football players on them and logos?
@2spark631
@2spark631 10 ай бұрын
Depends on many things that we do not know. What laser wattage do you have. What specific laser module do you have. What batch of clear acrylic did you receive? Materials do not always act the same from batch to batch. Just because you have a 10W laser, does not mean someone else's 10W laser will act the same because of laser spot size, focus, laser spot shape, etc. Maaaany factors

You set the speed to 100% How does it know to start at 5% and increase from there? I’m new at this!

Lightburn takes the image and based on the darkness of the pixels, regulates the power directly to the laser as it scans the image across. Your set it up, and Lightburn does the heavy lifting! :) Let us know how it turns out!

I'm confused, one of the tips I read is never run the laser at 100% power that it will shorten the life of the laser tube, is this not true?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
The experience I have had with most laser I have worked with is that even if you run the laser at 100%, they have a hardware limit under 100% to protect the tube or the diode. Always putting in an extra factor doesn't hurt if you want to be extra safe!

Actually not making anything...I just received the laser (Sculpfun S9) unpacked it and put it together and trying to learn Lightburn. I'm having a bit of issues with the fonts. When I burn a word the lines are a bit squiggly - any suggestions? The images are fine though!

Hi Kostantino, welcome aboard. My first guess without seeing your machine would be to check the tension on the belts. Let me know if you solved the issue and did to get the fonts working! You are going to have fun with your laser! :)

Sorry for the dumb question but I am a newbie trying to learn this before I get my laser. When you said you changed the power from 100-80% (14:47) the card still shows 100%. I am obviously not understanding this. Thanks for your help.
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Just Me. On the timecode you supplied, if you look at the lower right hand side, it does state that the setting is at80% max power. Either way, what I am demonstrating is that by changing the power setting, you can fine turn your results. If you happen to cut all the way through, you can speed up the movement, and if you need to to loose just little power, drop the power setting. This will depend on your laser, and how much power it uses in it's beam.

What power laser did you use for this testing?
@LaserLivestream
@LaserLivestream 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, I use a Emblaser 2 which is around 15 watt laser, but this settings test can be used with any power laser. If you are using a 100 watt laser, you can either 1. speed up the laser movement or 2. lower your max power. When engraving an image, you don't need to blast through the material. What kind of laser are you using?
