The 20-20-20 game from Russ is still one of the greatest single game performances in NBA history, especially considering the reasoning behind it. It’s really sad to think somebody with Westbrook’s accomplishments is still criminally underrated by the media.

The fans that view Russ in a negative light have never played the game at a high level. This era of fans values the highlight over the skill set. If they knew what it took to do what Russ does night in and night out they wouldn’t be so easily influenced. Russ is truly a one of one. It’s just hard for todays common fan to acknowledge it because it isn’t highlight driven it’s effort driven.

K Marts take about A PG rebound = instant fast break, is why the Lakers thing didnt work. Its also why at OKC, Steven Adams used to box out for Russ. Adams could put 100% effort into keeping the lane clear. Russ would fly in and grab rebound while Adams had a headstart in getting back on the break. It was a strategy that benefited the team, it wasnt Adams giving Russ a rebound.. Adams couldnt really jump but he was strong as f..k on the ground. Those rebpunds turned into fast break assists, which led to triple doubles.

@@Grind2Excellence Thank you! Finally someone who actually watches him. When they were saying it's understandable to criticize shot blockers if they give up too many O rebounds, or going for too many steals and letting your man go by, going for defensive rebounds the way westbrook does also hurts the team because he doesn't guard his man. People equate effort with showing high emotions and running around a lot... That doesn't mean effort. Some people just play with less explosiveness and emotions, that doesn't mean less effort. Westbrook, takes a TON of defensive plays off and often has his man slipping past him without Russ knowing cause he's not even paying attention. He also gambles for steals like crazy. And then, people say Kawhi doesn't play hard because of his demeanor, yet he is one of the few elite scorers while playing elite defense on the best player every game. But because he doesn't yell and scream and looks calm all the time, somehow he isn't playing hard... btw, westbrook is my fav player but his effort/defense is overrated

To be fair they go at him for it because of how blatantly he does it. There have been multiple games where he’s wasted multiple possessions in a row because he needed to get that 10th assist, constantly passing the ball at the last second even when he can take a wide open layup. I don’t disagree with your statement just explaining why ppl use that phrase more so with him than other players. As a rockets fan I’ve seen harden do the same multiple times but not as obvious in comparison.

@kbt33_
@kbt33_ Жыл бұрын
Doing what he did is definitely not easy otherwise more players would do it for the money/attention/accolades. The problem was that his heart and effort didn’t equate to always winning. At times he’ll force bad passes to try and get his assists. He’s good for more than 10 points earlier in his career so he doesn’t need to force up bad shoots. He just wasn’t efficient and it’s showing now in his career. So his mentality to be what he once was, was hurting the team before he stepped back with the Clippers. He had a good run last year with them but still a drop off from his OKC and Wizards days.

@@SummerhillNard You realize it was a 7-game series, right? 1 game doesn't explain it all. That being said, Russ was terrible when it mattered most, especially in the 4th quarter. In game 6 (the game you mentioned), he had 4 crucial turnovers in the 4th quarter alone, made no threes, and shot 37%. And you saying he played well? Now, that doesn't mean KD had a good game either; they both sucked. Great players usually have good stats even when they don't play well, because they have a high usage rate, but if you watched that game, when it mattered most in the 4th quarter, they were trash. You want to say he played better than KD? Okay, sure. Regardless, their two best players weren't good enough. They were up 3-1 and lost because they couldn't deliver. those who watched westbrook in real life know that you just can't win with him. He has ZERO off ball game. And even with durant, he chose to SHOOT MORE THAN HIM. I used to love it when he did that when i was rooting for the warriors. He refuses to be effective without the ball. Thats problematic for a guy with such a high usage rate as his. I just can't respect that style of play. He's talented af. The only time he played well withot hte ball was in houston. There you saw how beautiful his game could be. It's a shame. Russ deserves the outmost respect after all the disrespect he's gotten over the past decade and a half, I'd argue he's a top 3 PG of all time with a ring that's the only thing he hasn't done. He changed the game triple doubles became a normality because of him he did it 3 seasons in a row. Westbrook is a living legend and I'll always stand on that.

A big part of why fans disrespect Russ is his flaws are aesthetically bad. Like boneheaded turnovers or airballing a shot are bad. The problem is people use this to negate every productive thing he does, while also stigmatizing his production as “stat padding”

Bruh I love Russ and he should absolutely be celebrated for what he’s done but when it comes to winning and hof level play he’s at the bottom whenever we start talking about basketball. Like we can acknowledge what Russ has done but let’s be realistic about the actual basketball of it. We’re not gonna pretend Russ was Kobe because he played hard.

Russ for sure is a hall of famer. I don't think anyone has denied that. He's a freak of nature. All that being said, I wouldn't want him on my team if we trying to win a chip. That doesn't mean he sucks. Or isn't a hall of famer. But I've seen him with my own eyes be brilliant so many times and then throw it all away at the end of the game because of his bad decision making. And that's why I wouldn't want him on my team if we trying to win a chip.

And then all this hate came out about him and it was nonstop!!! The dude has been a pure ball of energy from day one and he still is and never stopped. He had and will have boneheaded plays and bad decisions. But man, nobody in their right mind can disrespect him. He plays hard all the time and is one of the most exciting players of all time. What he has been able to do over his career is crazy and pretty much nobody has done that. Just love Russ and enjoy him while he is still around, we will miss him one day. It also shows why balance is everything cuz if your calling card is how hard you play but i costs your team at times; logically you should figure out how to dial it back at times.

The media helped Russ win an MVP he didn’t deserve. James Harden had better stats and a better seed but Russ won because he was the poor victim when KD left and everyone hated him. There’s literally videos of Steven Adams moving out of the way so Russ could grab the rebounds. Russ knew those stats would win the MVP even if he was the 6th seed. It was a nice feel good story. Harden was 2 rebounds away from a triple double and had the 3rd seed.

Ty Lue has a allegiance to LBJ and Klutch sports. Forcing Russell Westbrook as a 6th man with regulated minutes helps create the narrative that Russ was the problem with Lakers. Lue can't have Russell Westbrook ball out as a starter it'll be a media distraction that'll make LBJ & company look bad.

Ppl don't understand yes ofc Russ was chasing his stats for the rebound but really the quicker you can get the ball to the pg after a miss the better because it always gives the bigs an extra step on their defender on the other end. All they have to do is box out they don't need to try and go up for it while the other teams bigs are leaving their feet tryna get over you and grab it before Russ you already running down court. And it's a bonus he's one of the fastest ever with the ball.

When he got to the Lakers is when the hate started. The media wanted him to change his game to fit with Lebron. They wanted him to play slow and spot up shoot. That's not his game so he would mess up alot. Why didn't Lebron get off the ball? How did Russ make the playoffs with my trash Wizards months before getting traded to the Lakers? Powerful ppl on tv who fanboy Lebron or need Lebron to be successful in order for them to be relevant, based their commentary on bashing Russ. Common folk are too dumb to think for themselves so they adopt the media's words. Btw the Lakers aren't doing any better without him than they did with him so that should tell u what or who the problem was and still is.

I think the reason Russ was so upset with KD after the MVP he received wasn’t because he went to go win a ring with gsw, but because he believed KD would ride or die with him until they won together. I understand bettering your situation and wanting to win a ring in your career, but I would personally ride with my best homie till we won together.

Exactly. Fair critiques are valid and needed. Great talent but Gil is speaking about Russ as if he's friend and colleague rather than giving a fair assessment of the good and bad. Give props and criticism where they're due

@@aaronjohnson6622he told his bigs to let him get the board so they can run. Because usually on a shot a guard is the first line of defense. I agree him being at least on a all defensive team. But chasing stats to rebound so you can push the pace. Because regardless as a center the first thing you do is give the board to the pg. Now if he's crashing and we get it we run.
