Thanks for this. I really enjoyed it. Holmfirth was my hometown from 1970 to 2000. Prior to the filming of ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ much of the infrastructure was in poor condition. The Woollen mills were all in full swing. The river Holme used to run with many different colours when the dye works washed out their vats This all changed when the series started to be filmed there. The town blossomed and now the mills have all been turned into apartments and very nice ones too! I well remember walking around the town snd seeing the actors in the series. They almost. became part of the scenery and apparently loved. being there. As you said Bill Owen is buried in St John’s Churchyard at Upperthong. He said that he considered it his spiritual home. Next to him now is Peter Sallis who played Cleggy. The countryside around the town is stunning and well worth a visit in its own right.

Thanks Graham! One of the things I wasn’t expecting was the scenery as I drove towards Holmfirth It absolutely blew my mind! I live in North Sheffield so not far away at all but had never known just how amazingly scenic the whole area is!

Now we have had a general tour of Holmfirth, how about a specifically "Last Of The Summer Wine" video? Including you going up the steps beside "Sid's Cafe" that the three main characters often walked up. There are surely several filming locations you could show us like the adjacent homes of Howard/Pearl and Cleggy. Suggest you start at the bus station so that visitors intending to come by bus can get their bearings. I'm from London with a daughter in Leeds and I did visit (or try to visit) Homfirth in the summer of 2018. I was on the 314 bus from Huddersfield and around a mile short of the bus station, the rain came bucketing down. No umbrella. I ended up having to wait in the shelter of the bus station and let two buses towards Huddersfied go before I got on the third one with rain still teeming down. Planned 2-3 hour walkaround abandoned

Hi really loved your "last of the summer wine" video it was my late dad's favourite programme so much so that at his funeral we had the last of the summer wine music playing on our way into the church and dad's cloth cap on his coffin such a fitting tribute to a great man my dad and so watching your video brought back memories of him and the laughter we shared whilst watching the show, wish I could have taken dad to Holmfirth and had a cup of tea in "sids cafe" with him he would have liked that, maybe my wife and I will spend a few days in Holmfirth in the summer and remember dad so thanks again for the video it really brought a tear to my eyes thinking that dad would have loved the tour👍

Very interesting! I see the traffic in Holmfirth is just as bad as when I last drove through the town. Perhaps you could visit the site of Aunty Wainwright’s shop in Marsden? It was quite funny to see the BBC staff bolting the imitation shop front on to the building after it was turned into a house between their filming visits! A very clever idea. The Marsden Mechanic’s Institute Tower is a local landmark and unmissable. One of my favourite locations is the entrance of the railway and separate Canal tunnel at Standedge where Compo had his adventures in the oil barrel submarine (a very clever radio controlled device in reality, I’d love to know more about the skilled people who made the mechanical props). Finally, I always enjoyed counting the number of times that the Emley Moor TV tower appeared in the programme. It’s a beautiful tower and I’ve been privileged to visit the observation deck during my broadcasting days (ITV/IBA) where you could see all over the LoTSW countryside. Yorkshire is beautiful. Regards, Rob.

Hi GimbalWalkTV! I posted the following on an older video so you probably won't have seen it. I hope it's ok to repost here...:- I think it's great that you are focusing on ordinary British towns and villages instead of just more videos of the worlds famous cities! These places deserve to be filmed, and viewed by as many people as possible. Would definitely recommend people try and watch these videos on a good TV screen rather than a mobile device as it's so much more immersive. Love seeing them in 4K as every tiniest detail shows up so it's pretty much exactly as the human eye sees things. This really makes if feel like being there. Judging by other comments, some people prefer the videos to have music, some people don't. Both totally valid opinions. I personally prefer the natural sounds as it adds to the immersive nature of the footage. Could i therefore make a recommendation: that for each of the places you film, you upload 1 video of it with the music, and 1 without. Then viewers can then choose, and it means more views for your channel!.

Hi there and thank you for the kind words!! I"ll see what I can do regarding the sound - although I don't currently have a great sound recorder yet!

Thanks for Holmfirth, I live 10 miles from there and spent 30 years from 1969 working just outside the town on the Holme Moss road. I moved to our Huddersfiel branch in 1999 and retired in 2009, I've not really bben back to look round since, quite a few shops have changed. Trying to park at lunch time to pick up some fish and chips or a sandwich was a nightmare and driving on Hollow Gate you risked running over tourists gawping at Nora Batty's house. It used to amuse us to see them turn a corner in Holmfirth and appear in Meltham or Marsden, somethin non locals probably didn't know. We have a set of 6 postcard photoes of the May 1944 floods which my late father in law had, sadly I don't do Facebook so can't put them on your site.

Like most film locations never quite what it seems on screen much of the filming was on the quiet small roads around the town and no doubt when Places like Sids cafe were used time of the day and week would have been taken into consideration , lovely programme though and has a certain timeless ness about it. SIDs cafe were used

Absolutely enjoyed this video. You describe parts of the town with Summer Wine locations extremely well. I looks a lovely place to visit, indeed. Many thanks for this showing, and may I suggest two other locations - Buxton, Derbyshire, and Denbigh, Wales.

Great tour and video. If your a fan of Last of the Summer Wine i would highly recommend a trip on board the tour bus, which runs every weekend outside Sid's Cafe. The tour guide Colin actually owned Sid's Cafe for over twenty years.

I used to drive coaches for a living and here are my notes for when I went to Holmfirth with my passengers:- HOLMFIRTH An attractive town where cinema films were being made by the Bamforth Brothers only months after the first ever film was produced in 1895. The Bamforths are famous for their comic 'cheeky' postcards, still manufactured in the town. From the bus station looking in the opposite direction to Nora Batty's house you can see Bamforth's factory, easily recognisable by a row of white window frames on the first floor. The town and surrounding hillsides are now familiar to millions of British Television viewers as the setting for the popular comedy series 'Last of the Summer Wine', with its characters, Compo, Seymour & Clegg, (originally with Compo, Foggy & Clegg), see the exterior of Nora Batty's house and enjoy refreshments in 'Sid's Cafe', which really is a cafe. Near the 18th century church is a pillar erected in 1802 to commemorate the Peace of Amiens. On this, a plaque records the extraordinary height to which flood water rose in 1852 when Bilberry Reservoir burst and 90 million gallons came thundering down the valley, 81 people were killed, damage was estimated at £250,000. In 1944 another 5 people died from floods. Many local playwrights lived in the town, the most famous being George Taylor, most of his plays have a mill town background. There is a monument that you can see both from Huddersfield and from Holmfirth set high on the hill called 'Castle Hill'. This was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. It is said that on a clear day you can see York Minster some 35 miles away. The row of houses between Nigel Hinchliffes gift shop and the Elephant and Castle is known as Hollowgate. Not many years ago the houses were in ruins but now there are picturesque shops. Holmfirth is also famous for its worsted cloth. PLACES TO NOTE AND HOW TO GET THERE FROM BUS STOP. NIGEL HINCHLIFFES GIFT SHOP Walk down from bus stop to bridge, shop on corner opposite. Here you can buy a guide to Summer Wine Country. SIDS CAFE Not so long ago Sid's Cafe was only a cafe in the summer, in the winter it was a paint and wallpaper shop. It is situated on the opposite corner to Nigel Hinchliffes gift shop and next to the church. The interior was filmed in a TV studio, If you look or go into the cafe you will see that the interior is totally different to the studio set. NORA BATTY'S HOUSE From Nigel Hinchliffes shop go up towards Hollowgate, past the Elephant & Castle (on your left), after approx. 300 yards look across the river to her house. THE POST CARD PUB Go down hill to bridge across bridge and turn right towards Huddersfield, pub on right, inside large drawings of postcards and reasonably priced meals.

It's funny, I moved to the village next to Holme Firth and only became aware of the LOTSW connection when someone at work told me. Lovely village. Watched a few LOTSW episodes since moving here to see if I can see any familiar sights. Took my family to the Nora Batty cafe.
