I'm shocked there's no reference to the song _"Strange Memories of Death"_ in this sequel. Despite going unused in the original, it still ended up becoming one of the most popular songs of the original, and would've been awesome to see return.

The remixes of Gimmick 1 by Bille is sounding something with less impact than the nes ones. Really liked the David Wise ones but he now composes music more like atmospheric than the time when he composed music for Battletoads for example. Sounds more like DK Tropical Freeze and DKC3 GBA than Gimmick.

The soundtrack has oddly grown on me over my playthrough, and I've found a couple favorites I've come to love. But it really is such a vast departure from the original ost that I really understand those that feel a little alienated, because it really is going for a different style. I love the more atmospheric take David went for, but I would be lying if I didn't say I still prefer the original's upbeat, genre-hopping energy. Getting various bits of pop, jazz, rock to work all in one ost (let alone on the famicom) is still such a hard act to follow 💚

This game is SOOO GOOD!!!!! Just FULLY beat it today...though for some reason my file says 95% complete so I'm not sure what I'm missing for 100% (got all treasures so all the map Ohagis are waving pink flags and played on Switch so there shouldn't be achievements...at least in theory). SO FUN AND INCREDIBLY SATISFYING THOUGH (and the TRUE final boss is AWESOME)!

I haven't seen anyone mention the use of leitmotif in this soundtrack. In almost every song David Wise composed here, you can hear a recurring melody. It's super catchy! I haven't known him to do that much in his works.

While David is a great composer, don’t think he was the right choice for this games ost A lot of the original songs sound like DKC, which means they are well made, but it doesn’t seem to fit the style and pace Gimmick is played at. A lot of the remixes us p weird instrumentation. Sounds like he tried to make the songs sound more child like. Sorta like Yoshi music, and I don’t think it sounds good.
@Rivalseeker2 ай бұрын
I suppose his compositions lean more towards the atmospheric side than the original game, but the original did have some atmospheric tracks (like the opening ice area of Stage 6 before entering the castle). Personally, I can look past it.
@jennyfox26122 ай бұрын
I have to agree. I feel like a lot of these original compositions should have been used in a different game tbh. They're really good tho.
@KetsubanSolo2 ай бұрын
@Rivalseeker I think it kinda works because Gimmick 2 in general is a bit slower-paced with more emphasis on solving puzzles. Also I'd argue it harkens back to how Gimmick 1 had all of these setpieces that weren't gameplay-focused at all and just meant to make the game world feel alive. The soundtrack here is basically doing to Gimmick 2 what the visuals and Easter eggs did for Gimmick 1.
@RivalseekerАй бұрын
@KetsubanSolo That's a good point. It also helps keep the player in a calm mindset when analyzing an area of how to manipulate Yumetaro and his Bouncing Star. I see both sides of the argument, though.
@Chop23Ай бұрын
I think Tee Lopes would have been a better fit. Then again, I think Gimmick 2 as a game pales in comparison to the original. The original was pure platforming, while this one is way more puzzling and almost too "fair" compared to how brutal the difficulty was in the original. Not to mention, the levels in this drag on for wayyy too long. There were some levels where I just wanted it to end more than anything.The boss fights are also a joke - some aren't even boss fights at all but chase cutscenes.

I love David Wise but he was an attrocious choice for this game. His music is very subtle and atmospheric which is the polar opposite of what a Gimmick! ost should be.
@MarioBros275682 күн бұрын
I dont think it was really his choice tho. Some studios heavily limit composers on how a soundtrack should sound and which kinda vibes they want from it. Wise definitely can put out catchy bangers if he is rightfully directed.

In all honesty, both games work well in their own ways, Gimmick used catchy songs due to the more cartoony locations, and in Gimmick 2 its more atmospheric due to the locations being more… atmospheric? It just makes sense Also this comment seems kinda rude but I cant put my finger on as to why

@Chop23Ай бұрын
While the original tracks are good on their own, it really doesn't match the energy of the tracks in the original game. The original tunes were upbeat, and very melodic - carrying a distinct tune that is easy to remember and hum to. While Wise's tracks are almost completely atmospheric and don't match the hecticness that the game's mechanics provide. Barring maybe Lava, you could almost instantly tell which track is an original and a past remix. So while far from being bad tracks, they just don't seem to fit well with the game itself for me...
@jennyfox261218 күн бұрын
I think I may have a theory as to why Wise phoned it in. Basically, he was scoring another game at the time called Nikoderiko. I have a feeling that his addition to the game was last minute and he ended up just repurposing some unused tracks from that game along with the eh Gimmick remixes. That's just my theory tho.
@MarioBros275682 күн бұрын
@@jennyfox2612 It is very much possible, however i dont actually believe that. Would a ambitious composer like him really be that lazy nowadays? I mean he literally created a whole new OST of DKC3 on the GBA in just about 3 weeks! On HIS behalf and without any order from the higher ups. Its just hard to imagine for me. Personally i think it was more of a forced direction of the dev studio. To get a certain cinematic-atmospheric kinda style for the game. However that is just MY personal theory.
