For those who are uncertain on juniper flavor, imagine if a pinecone tried to be a blueberry when it grew up and you get the idea of the flavor. A mildly sweet, piney flavor that tastes FAR better than it sounds.

One of the appeals of the classic gin and tonic is the speed of the drink. It's hot. It's July. It's Saturday afternoon. Frozen glasses in the freezer. Gin, also in the freezer. Tonic in the fridge. Nine seconds later you have a G & T. The most complicated thing is the wedge of lime. I will stick to that first version.

For a clean G&T on a budget, I really like Canada Dry tonic and Seagram's gin. Seagram's is very juniper-forward, but tastes really great and well-balanced with Canada Dry. I also like to muddle some mint leaves and half a lime in the bottom of a pint glass, add ice cubes, pour 3-4oz of gin, and top with tonic and stir. You can scale that up and make it in a giant batch, too. It kills at parties, and it's a hell of a summer cocktail.

Juniper berries taste sweet (when picked at the right time). Crunchy yet "gooey"....similar to the texture of a tiny cranberry but filled with fig guts (texture only). They have a wonderful pine-tree note....which makes sense because junipers grow on desert evergreens.

@pmcnamara1954 5 жыл бұрын
Note from a linguistics nerd: Your local gin labeled "Junípero" is named after Father Junípero Serra who founded the first nine California Spanish missions. A play on words no doubt since the juniper berry is such a prominent botanical in gins. But it is pronounced hoo-NEE-pay-ro (Spanish) or hoo-NIHH-purr-oh (American).

Here in Sweden, we have a local tonic maker that have tonics flavored with elderflower, blueberry, spruce shoots, rhubarb, or cucumber. Cucumber and rhubarb are my clear favorites, especially if you take the cucumber flavored and add freshly ground black pepper and a few cucumber shavings.

I absolutely love the 1724 Tonic, but the Fever Tree Mediterranean with the blue wrapping is also very fine.

Chilled glass. Plymouth Navy Strength or Tanqueray 10, Fever Tree cucumber tonic, tiny dash of lime, plenty of ice. Plymouth regular or Greenall's if other choices not available.

Great video! I recently acquired some Roku gin and have been making fantastic gimlets with it. The Japanese botanicals are really nice. I enjoy the simple-to-complex approach of this video. As a FYI, a few passes with a blow torch helps knock down the foam on a liquid.

Hey, have you tried Aviation Gin and if so, do you think it's worth it?

I used to think I hated gin until I tried different kinds (secifically, more expensive gins). They do range from crazy grassy to smooth, slightly sweet.

I just got into Gin and I made one with Gray Whale Gin with an orange peal and some light tonic and it was really great! I used like a 1 to 2ish ratio

If I can, I'll go for Fever Tree or a rosemary tonic, with Ha'penny Dublin Dry Gin (my all-time favourite gin), or Tanqueray (if I can afford it, Monkey 47 or Turicum Dry Gin). Working at a fairly expensive beer/liqueur store (for my fellow Swiss people here, Drinks Of The World), Tanqueray is the lowest priced gin I'd really buy, the only two cheaper options we have are Gordon's and Bombay Saphire, both of which are not really good...

Fever Tree Elderflower with Beefeater 24 almost a 50/50 mix, cracked, clear ice and lemon twist. not too fancy, but strong. hope to see use of that Ransom Old Tom, so far have just used it for a Martinez.

Fever Tree and both you sampled. When I try a new Gin I go with the Indian, afterwards I'll try Elderberry (slight preference for) and use the tonic I like most with the Gin on hand.

In Sweden we have a gin that is called Hernö Gin from Härnösand just south of the High Coast area and I find that their regular Blue Dry Gin works very well with a swedish brand of tonic called Nordic Tonic from The Eco Bewery (Ekobryggeriet) and specifically with their tonic that is flavored with Spruce Shoots.

My go to G&T includes a teaspoon and a half of simple syrup, a bar spoon of rose water, and the juice of half a lime. Especially with that Elder flower tonic, nothing beats it on a hot summer day.

My favorite gin is Gentilly Gin from Seven Three Distilling Co. in New Orleans. The Terroir Gin from St. George is also very nice. I've had gin made with cedar berries which is just a different species of juniper, from Jug Creek Distillery but they have closed so that gin will only live in memory.
