I've just been through this with the computer. It's not clear, but as soon as the position sharpens up, your opponent plays with an uncanny agreement with Stockfish 8.

Simon would beat me like a stupid drum but I'd be so embarrassed to have cheated in order to beat a GM. Or to even play past move 15. That's such a loser tactic :( Respect the game, dangit.

I agree that chess com has plenty of cheaters, but after playing on chess 24 for a short stint and finally settling on lichess, imo all sites have plenty of players who cheat (for whatever reason). What this means is that anyone who is trying to play online to see how strong they compared to other human players will be disappointed, so playing online is strictly for fun and practice.
@xtra9996
@xtra9996 7 жыл бұрын
Players of this strength might be most exposed to cheating. Weaker players don't really benefit from cheating, really strong players know that they have some skills. It would be interesting to know if there's a statistical analysis concerning the number of cheaters in correlation to their rating. However, one fact is for sure: all cheaters have a psychological problem that needs to be addressed.

I find that on chess.com 1300+ players seem to some how play like a master at some point of the game. Its disgusting to lose to a player rated that low. I don't take chess.com seriously any more.

This kind of explanation does LOT for my understanding of the game. Thanks so much. And thanks for sharing the losses, too. I get really discouraged when I can't seem to win.
@nards656
@nards656 7 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's so annoying. I'm assuming that the "cheating" would be running an engine simultaneously and duplicating the game so that the computer moves are used as the opponent moves? I understand that's illegal, but the only way to catch it is to compare the game after the fact to all the engines out there, right? I just really don't understand why someone would even want to do it, but I guess there are people who want a high rating very badly so that they can place bets and make money based on it????

GM Simon Williams, it looks like this time control is very inviting for some people to use an engine. However, may be some of your fans/subscribers (or people who have bought your DVDs) would like to play a 15 + 10 game against you and after that watch your thoughts during the game here: how you assess the position, your thoughts behind your/their moves, where you think they went wrong, etc.? I know this is probably a lot to ask for a video that we get for free, but basically you will be doing the same as before, but against people who are interested in improving their chess. Best wishes and thank you for the excellent content you are producing!

For me, I disagree with some of the comments. I like this time control and I am really taking a lot from your amazing vocal evaluation. So what there is an engine, you are getting better in the process, we are getting better, you are exposing cheaters. It is a WIN WIN scenario :) The point is we are seeing what you are seeing and withstanding so long against an engine is an admirable feat,.. cheaters will eventualy disappear when you will play on. I am for continuing the series :)

it sucks to wait the entire week to watch Simon playing longer games just to know that there's a 50% chance that the opponent is going to be using a engine. regardless of that, it's awesome to see Simon playing against stockfish 8 and commentating as it were a human. there's a lot of value in that.

Hi Simon. Like some other people commented, for 15 minute games, it probably would be best to only play against premium members or only play against users who have played at least 50 or 100 games. The computer cheaters probably would be banned after a few games, so someone who has played more than 50 games is likely not to be a cheater.

When you played O-O-O, I thought for sure that might be a mistake. I checked my engine to see how wrong I was, but I was surprised to find that it completely agreed with me. It says O-O-O is akin to dropping a pawn. It's hard to explain why the move is so bad though, I think it's just anti-positional. I've learned over the years that you never castle into the side where your opponent already has the a6, b5, c4 configuration set up. Even with the losing O-O-O, the position is so sharp that it would be easy enough for a GM like yourself to outplay your opponent, so it's annoying that you were playing a cheater. I would recommend checking your opponent's profile before playing them from now on!

This video series is really amazing, please don't stop!!!!! The cheating is regrettable, but it's your approach to these games and explanations that really make the difference - and not everyone will use engines. It may be worth creating a second account without your GM title so that not every second-rate low-ball cheat recognises you and fancies a pyrrhic victory with Stockfish. Either way I'm loving the series. Never been able to play a GM in my life (just trying to improve) so maybe another thing you could do is pick a random person from the comment section to play the next game against. I know that I would appreciate the opportunity (and certainly wouldn't send ridiculous messages telling you to hurry up in a 15 minute game).

Are people so obsessed with winning or having a high rating that they can't take the honor of playing against a GM (someone who actually worked to earn the title) for what it is? How does turning on a computer help you become a better player in an actual game? Simon, I appreciate these videos of longer time controls and the chance for you to fully explain your thinking. Yes, you have been the victim twice of cheating, but look at the bright side - you have cleared 2 cheaters off chess.com.

I don't get why people are so butthurt about playing against an engine. I LOVE watching high titled players play against engines, in longer time controls. Yes the result of the game is always the same, but the analysis of the game is absolute gold for me, to see what move or series of moves lost you the game, where you could have improved, etc, I don't know, for me it's magnificent.

I'm no GM for sure but I have to question the wisdom of allowing black to keep that pawn on C4. As the game showed White not being able to bring his light squared bishop to an aggressive post fatally flawed his piece coordination and in my opinion doomed his attack to failure. I agree that the extra pawn wasn't a big deal, but the restriction of that bishop certainly was. That said yeah I'd agree the opponent was using an engine. And yeah, that's why you'll probably never crack 2000 much less 2500. Sorry Simon.

How big are chances that a player (who lost against 1100 rated player in his first games) would - all of a sudden (just 12 days later) - find the best Computer suggested moves for ALL of his moves? That's at least what "chess.com" analysis is telling. It's not a "believe" that he's cheating, it's just a simple matter of fact. Too bad he made you feel bad.... you don't deserve it. Your videos are so instructive AND entertaining.... please keep on going. You're the best!!! Maybe chess.com should add a "cheater alert" while the game is running.... it was so obvious and should be easy to detect by an algorithm while the game is still running.

Simon, I think if you continue to play these longer time limits, you should start off by checking their profile - if they have a high rating for standard time limits but a low rating for bullet/tactics/3min etc., just abort the game... Move on to the next opponent. Life's too short for twats. Also, I would recommend adjusting your search settings to only play people who have been a member for a certain amount of time. This guy only joined a few weeks ago - in his second 15-minute game, he got mated in 13 moves playing like a beginner. He then wins almost every game... www.chess.com/live/game/2012054368?username=banduryst

Yes, Black could have done this. But after *1.d5 Bxc3* White has the "zwischenzug" *2.dxe6* (not losing the d-pawn). Or he could have chosen to sac the d-pawn to get a pin on the d-file.
