I had a character for awhile that I kept bringing into new campaigns, because all my groups kept disbanding before he got to explore any of his backstory, and I kept hoping "this time, we'll get to it!" (We never did, btw 😔) He was a tiefling who was ashamed of his infernal heritage, so did everything to distance himself from it, including focusing on frost magic instead of fire, hiding his red skin and gold eyes behind thaumaturgy, keeping his horns and tail behind his hood and robes, and fighting for justice to offset the evil perception. ...I think he'd have been fine saying "hell", but hopefully the relevance makes sense? Or... maybe I've just rambled on about my character selfishly 😅

I'm in a similar spot. I played also, back in '76 with the original rule set . My wife tolerated our all-night sessions Now, my granddaughter plays after school, so for her birthday, we all played - my wife and my daughter and son in law. I DM'd for the first time in over 40 years. Now we're planning a session for New Year's Eve. Surprisingly, my wife is leading the charge! I just need a session 0 to get everyone on the same page. Just stumbled across this and can only say thanks for sharing, this was great and congrats on having awesome and open parents. Fun fact aside, this was the complete opposite of my parent RPG experience. My parents had read somewhere that RPGs are imaginative and communicative, so they bought a starter set and prepared an evening for me and some friends (I was 10 at the time). It was great fun and after about 3 hours I was slain by a lizard man. Whereupon my parents closed the evening and said that now I knew everything they could teach me about it and from now on I should be the DM. And that's how I got into role-playing and being a DM.

quick tip for anyone who's doing a similar 'teach someone who's not accustomed to tabletop' game. if you have lots of sets of dice, mix them. it's a lot easier to say 'the d8 is the red dice' than describing it's shape or taking it and showing them 'this one'. if each dice looks distinct then it'll be easier, and if they're playing long term over time they tend to be able to recognise them.

So adorable! I also think it was quite obvious how much of a difference it makes who the dm is and how well they know you. You knew what would be boring for them so you did that for them but still made sure they could make their own choices regarding their characters, made sure the game wouldn't last too long, made it easier for them to recognise things on their character sheets, etc. - I think that can make a world of difference for someone who is reluctant to play. Had they just been thrown into a game with less help, they probably would've been overwhelmed and decided it just wasn't for them.

I got my mother to play her first ever D&D last summer, my brother, who had also never played, wanted to play and he wanted to get my mum to play too. So after convincing her, I put together a pair of characters for them, a mother and son duo (a human cleric and a half-elf paladin), and sent them to purify a fallen shrine of Lathander. There were some gnome merchants they met, they fought some imps and a warg, and ended up fighting a hobgoblin fighter based off one of my own D&D characters! Everyone had a fun time, although the session ran a touch longer than I intended (about 4 hours), and my mum was pretty tired by the end, but she understood the game, got into the roleplaying of her cleric, and came away saying the two most important things; 1) she had fun 2) she wasn't bored! 😂

I've re-watched this several times. So much fun! As a small boy, mom got me into Star Wars and the Chronicles on Narnia. My dad read me the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.
