Also, I forgot to mention this. The customer had the dealer "Fix" a leak 1 week after purchase. They were billed for "Replacing the thermostat". Which, clearly wasn't replaced, according to the flat gasket and swollen inner gasket. That may be the only reason the dealer took the vehicle back? Or, maybe they are nice. IDK I'm just glad it worked out okay this time!

I own a shop in Los Angeles and these cars make us a ton of money because they’re pieces of junk. Everything starts to take a crap at 60k miles! The Sonics are the same crap. I recently showed a customer on his Chevy Sonic that he had the same coolant and oil mixture, however it’s due to a bad engine oil cooler gasket set. Contaminates the entire cooling system. I told him to get rid of it because it’s only starting.. it’s always turbos, catalytic converters, valve covers, intake manifolds, shocks leak prematurely, coil packs fail, radiators crack easily, radiator tanks always leaking.. the list goes on and on and on. It’s a never ending story with these cars.

I always found if you use plain tap water, the minerals with destroy your aluminum radiator. Even if you drain and refill with coolant, eventually it will spring a leak.

Coolant has to be car specific also, and if your water don't have minerals (like using distilled water) or it's too hard it takes minerals from the engine and cooling system. Water wants to balance itself.

13k would be the first BIG question. By watching the video there is no way in heck that motor had 13 k on it more like 130k. You can tell by looking at the bolts on the cover they had been off before and oil/dirt build up around the cover and other spots. Plus that should have had dex cool IE orange antifreeze in it. If you mix green and orange it will also do that to the tank. I have seen and had to clean out a lot of GM cars and trucks because the owners put green in with orange. However when you pulled the stat out of it and i saw the same as you did oil that is the makings of a blow head gasket that motor is known for that. She was ripped off big time. I always tell my customers if you are serious about buying a car or truck that is a big investment cover your butt have it inspected by a shop you can trust. We do it here and I charge 250 bucks and it takes about 3 to 4 hours. reason for my time of 3 to 4 hours is I go from bumper to bumper and you name it i check it. That money can and will save you one heck of a headache and pocket book if the shop finds stuff that will make the deal go thru. I always tell my customers DON'T by a car or truck because you love the way it looks you buy it because it runs and drives great and needs little to NO work. Looks don't get you down the road! Please if you buy from the corner auto pop up shops ( that's what i call the shady dealers) Cover your butt with the inspection plus have them put in writing at least a 30 day return policy if something breaks. Here in Arizona the dealer has to give a 30 day 1500 mile warranty per our laws. Most of those dealerships buy known wrecked cars/trucks, repos that have been abused big time, or super high mileage ones. They polish the tird up and sell it like it is top quality. To many times i have had to help a customer out from one of those fly by night places. When i do the inspection I start a video recording from the time i walk up the the car/truck until i am finished with it. I have done that for a few years now since one of the fly by night places accused me and the new owner of doing something to the car when she brought it to me for inspection and it was towed back to them with a blown motor. they forgot to put oil in it during the oil change or never did a change nor checked the oil. The dealership tried to sue her but lost when i showed up with her in court. Moral of the story PLEASE get an inspection!

The coolant in there is green. The oily substance could be a buildup from mixing Dexcool and green coolant. I have heard a lot of issues where people run into sludge when those two coolants are mixed not saying that is it but it's a good possibility

Michael Dempsey- Nicely You are correct changing the antifreeze from Dexicool to non Dexicool in later model cars is a no no. It will cause sludge build up if not completely flushed normally a blown headgasket causes overheating & or white smoke from the exhaust. This so-called mechanic needs more experience. Also the cruze has a self bleeding cooling system.

Big props to you seriously for working on a car in 96° temperature. I remember when that level of heat never used to bother me so much even though I'm still in great shape and great cardio seems like it just does something to you the older you get. 2 out of 3 eco-tec's I've owned have used coolant, no spots on the driveway, no sign of leaks. One was a new car, so no abuse, A 1.8 cruze of all things. I could see headgasket being an issue on them.

bars leaks makes the coolant look like primer paint colored diarrhea ,, I have a 1983 chevy truck that had that crap in it cause of a leaky head gasket ,,i replaced the engine when it finally died and boiled out the radiator and hot water flushed the heater core ,,i finally installed a coolant filter on the heater return and managed to get most of the crap out the yello-brown goo on the radiator cap is engine oil ,i'm betting that engine has a weak headgasket that hasn't blown completely ,,OR it was already replaced and the system not fully cleaned i use Dawn dish soap and strait water and run the engine till it's hot and about 20 more minutes cause it will dissolve the oil

Any salvage / rebuilt vehicle take it to an alignment shop and make sure it can be aligned and is not bent . Have someone drive it while you are behind it . Make sure all 4 wheels track straight . I have seen bent vehicles not track straight on the highway . Years back , there was a " shop " in Brooklyn . His " chassis machine " was a blow torch and sledge hammer . " It looks pretty straight " ! You can't make this stuff up !

Pressure check the cooling system for a leak diagnosis. It takes a few minutes to pressurize the system and the tool is not a lot of $.

That screw type hose clamp is probably your leak. As it goes through heating and cooling cycles, those type of clamps are unable to adjust their tension and will leak under certain conditions. That clamp should be an squeeze on hose clamp.

Had a 2014 Cruze and every 20k-25k miles I was replacing the valve cover. Replaced valve cover 3 times then ended up replacing intake then traded it in on a Toyota

Use a pick to lift up on the clip of a connector to remove it. Using pliers could break the connector. Pocket screwdrivers and small picks will help remove connectors without breaking them. Coming from a gm tech.

Somebody messed with that cooling system before and knew something was wrong. That T-stat is not OEM and neither are the hose clamps on that housing. On top of that, they didn't even use the correct coolant, it should be orange, not green.

Shouldn't the coolant on a Chevy Cruze be orange? The Cruz takes Dex Cool not prestone type antifreeze. What was coming out of that system was Green.

That's an aftermarket thermostat housing, and thermostat. The aftermarket thermostats are infamous for leaking, or failing stuck. Usually they come with a plastic back half thermostat housing.

oil in the coolant on those engines is more than likely the oil cooler seals. very common. my sonic has the same engine, i put a bottle of at 205 reseal in the oil because im cheap. its to rejuvenate seals not swell them like other products. i think its helping.

Another problem with the Eco-Tec is timing. They are notorious for jumping with a small amount of wear on gears or chain. It’s a good idea to change them every 75k miles.

leak , step 1 always pressure test first. EPS code could be wreck related , uses steering angle inputs and g force sensors. Sometimes they set after doing an alignment and need a calibration. Or from alignment being off from the wreck

you should have pressure tested anyway. if there is a blown head gasket you can find it through pressure testing a coolant system IF the head gasket failed and is letting coolant escape into a cylinder or into the oil passages then you will see a pressure drop and no physical leak. possibly even unable to build pressure if the head gaskets blown bad enough. just something to keep in mind.

If she still has the Cruze then check the oil cooler. On that vehicle the gaskets shrink inside the oil cooler like the thermostat gasket did. When the gaskets in the oil cooler shrink the oil and coolant will be allowed to mix.

I remember back in the "cash for clunkers" days someone came in and the RO said windshield wiper fluid bad. It wasn't bad fluid. The windshield washer fluid reservoir was topped right off with 0w20 which was correct engine oil for that TL. People are stupid and put fluids in places they shoudn't. The fact that the oil in this cooling system was used oil means that probably didn't happen here.

My wife had a 2011 Chevy Cruze, the car was bought used with 36k, once we got the car to around 75k it went through 3 turbos and an alternator, the car had severe electrical issues. I thought it was a flood car that did not have a salvage title. We will never buy a GM product again.
