New technique woman in the blue shirt reminds me of my senior canoeing instructor: "Try to keep your ankle dry, get your leg wet" - the amount of effort people put into trying to keep their foot dry is usually the reason they fall and get totally soaked, or hurt. He ALWAYS encouraged people to step into the water on a sure thing instead of heroics. She committed to dropping off the bow into shallow water, landing on her feet, and having very precise control of the boat from that point. Seeing where her feet are landing, and having such precise control - not sure how she could beat that.

Was a coxswain in navy on motor whale boat. If you take the bow line and secure to a dock bollard. Then apply power towards dock the stern kicks in to pier and you tie off. So easy. Yes you have to allow moderate slack in bow. I dock my boat single-handed in all kinds of weather.

My wife and I do the same thing when we're trailering. We don't power load and the wind/current pulling the boat away from the dock makes it easier to walk the boat onto the trailer. So in actuality, it IS a brilliant move!

I used to bring my Hardy 20, with a 75HP outboard, alongside on my own. The secret is: 1. to have all your lines ready and running aft first, 2. Come alongside and tie up your stern line from within the boat, 3. Put the engine into fwd tick over and turn the wheel hard over towards the jetty. This tightens the stern line and gently brings the bow in to the jetty. 4. Grab bow line, switch off engine and step ashore looking cool and tie up. Similarly, if the bow line is tied up first, then turn the wheel hard over to the jetty and go astern on tick over. This brings the stern in nice and slow.

The number of boat captains that just leave the helm as the boat is floating away just blows my mind. I sit here screaming at my computer "DRIVE THE BOAT". So much could be solved with the use of the engines to, you know, control the boat.

I have a 19’ boat (in the movie Grownups) and also dock by myself. However, when I use my forward spring line, with a little slack, and put it on the cleat, I put it in forward gear, and turn away from the dock, bringing in the stern. These people drive boats like I see people drive cars. As long as that can aim it into a spot, they don’t care about anyone around them.

Miami Boats, I know you don't response to questions, but, that jet boat launch is a classic example of the need to use one continuous line tied bow to stern. The girl on the dock had no control of the stern and I couldn't believe she drop the bow line and then grabbed to centre handrail, very lucky boat didn't draft away. How can this single be better than a line tied to bow to stern, please explain.

Is there some sort of dock line shortage in Miami? I have more than enough lines on my boat to put one on every single cleat and still have some leftover. They're not all "proper" dock lines with an eye splice, but I just can understand why you'd put a boat in the water with only one line on it

@@Renegade040 since I solo on my boat I have a line tied on the bow and on the stern. The bow is pretty long and tied to a tie in the bed of my truck. Back down the ramp and when I see the boat release, I slowly pull out of the ramp until dry, stop, parking brake, get out and get my line. I then walk around onto the dock. The stern line is tied at mid point of bow line so once on dock I can pull on both lines and secure to dock tie downs. Yes, two bumpers are deployed. It’s a piece of cake. I just don’t understand the struggles. I don’t drink so that helps.

That's exactly what my wife and I do! It's easier to hook the bow and use the drive to pull the stern into the dock. Did you ever try to push a boat away from the dock (against the tide/wind) to get it out onto a trailer? Since we don't power load, the wind/current pushing the boat AWAY from the dock makes it MUCH easier because we can control everything with dock lines. We've been boating/launching/loading for 40+ years so, we pretty much have it down to a science that works perfectly for us.
