Stupidity! I can never figure out why these idiots stay in the boat, or stand on the dock watching the tires spin instead of using some common sense, and climbing into the bed of the truck, to put weight on the back wheels, so the tires will grip the ramp. They’re totally useless, including the operator of the boat for not knowing this, so he could tell, them what to do! These morons just added more weight to the boat so the truck add more excess weight to drag up a slippery ramp!

Because the Captain doesnt lay down the rules. People always knew the rules of my boat and what job they had when coming and going, they also knew that when the boat came back to the dock that their boat ride ended and get the hell off the boat. Lay out the ground rules for everyone to follow. It amazes me to watch a Captain pull up to a dock and watch 3 people in the boat do nothing to help, those people were not told what they needed to do by the Captain or they are to F-ing lazy.

Kind of reminds me of my old coworker. A bunch of us from work were heading out to the river so we all met up at a grocery store on the way out. I looked at my friends tire and it is low on air and cracked really bad. I mentioned this to him and he says it's fine, he'll put air in it. Half of our group left and we got to our campsite at around noon. The other half rolled in at 2am, seems my coworkers tire finally lost air, disintegrated and road on the rim for 100 yards when the rear hub failed too. They had to wait for a flatbed to arrive, then load up the boat and trailer, drive back 50 miles, find a trailer shop and completely replace the axle assembly, rims and tires. The bummer was there was an RV dealership and shop within 5 miles of the grocery store we stopped at. Never rush it.

Personally, my thought was to simply jack-up the axle, and put the wheel back on if the wheel-nuts ( lug-nuts to you yanks) have been removed by some arsehat or just ‘come loose’. Of course you would need to get some extra nuts to use, but it’s not hard to remove one nut from each other wheel you have and have enough to be able to get home at reduced speed and with caution.

if the bearing is completely gone the wheel can slide right off, it's best to keep an extra bearing, tube of grease, tools with you at all times. I agree he should have re floated the boat. If he had an extra bearing, grease and required tools if could replaced the bearing in ~30 minutes. By dragging that trailer out with the boat he likely destroyed the threads on the end of the axle and won't be able to get the axle nut off may have to replace the axle.
@Thunderbyrd.
@Thunderbyrd. 2 жыл бұрын
No doubt, that's what I thought. I thought to myself that by leaving the boat on the trailer he most likely destroyed any possibility of a less time consuming and less expensive repair. He likely destroyed the hub and/or studs, spindles, etc.

@x-man5056
@x-man5056 2 жыл бұрын
NO. If you lose a bearing and your wheel actually falls of that way you most likely will need to replace the axle also. On a tandem axle boat trailer, you can run it with just the rear axle having a good wheel and tire (not far and slower). Been there, done that. But he should have taken care of that before loading the boat obviously. The pickup driver must be pretty oblivious to do that kind of damage and not notice. It had to have smoked and screeched for many miles before the attempted boat recovery. And no more that one person in the boat for pull out, if that.

I did the same thing to a one time so called friend who was sneaking around with my now ex wife. A fishing buddy spotted them launching his rig for a day at the sandbar while I was at work. After he called me all it took was pair of pliers and a flat screwdriver. I went to the ramp, popped the dust covers loosened the axle nuts to only the last thread, put the covers back on and let motion and gravity do the rest. They got their love boat out of the water OK, but at about 35 mph and less than a mile later 2 of the 4 wheels ran for the exit door. Soon after I "just Happened" to come upon their unfortunate situation, the boat was half on the ground and the two gawking muts were having a what do we do now moment. This was before the time of camera phones, but the look on their faces will live in my memory forever.

Intentionally causing property damage and potentially endangering lives because you make bad choices in friends and women? You must be proud. I'm all for revenge, but this is not the way.

My uncle told me on the ramp, 4 wheel drive in low, and use wheel chock when truck isnt moving. I've never had any issues. But i laugh at everyone else spinning tires at my ramp. I love when boats are way bigger than the souped up truck thats towing them, thats my favorite.

To do an emergency repair when one wheel falls off provided the studs are ok, you just take one nut off each of the other wheels to fasten the wheel back on. Only senseless people stay on the boat when it's being recovered from the water, surely they know their weights going to cause problems with the traction of the prime mover?

I don't understand why people let friends stay in the boat while pulling the boat out. It just adds extra weight. To me... It's a no brainer.

As we had a 23 foot hydrosport with c-drive and 3 foot pulpit. We trailers it everywhere up and down the east coast. I would always put the suburban in four-wheel drive everything I was pulling the boat out of the water. Never had an issue unless I didn't have it in four wheel

This happens more than it should because the same people who pore over every detail when they spec out their tow vehicle and new boat don't pay the slightest attention to what trailer the dealer chooses to put under it. They know what sound system they want on the boat, right down to the last decibel and number of speakers, but will never take even the most cursory peek at the weight limit for that rig. And maintenance, don't make me laugh. I learned when selling boats and yachts that there can be no halfway measures in maintaining a boat trailer, Especially for salt water use. Use the finest marine salt-water grease for hubs, fittings and slathered on every bolt, nut and washer before your first launch. Coat every fitting on that trailer like you want it to be showroom new after the last payment is made, and keep it up. Flush out the trailer after each use, including every cross-member, the wheels, chains, light fixtures, Everything. And never, Ever overload your trailer.

From a 12 foot aluminum boat to a monster boat, get some boat ramp practice in on a slow weekday somewhere. Many things can and do go wrong until you figure out the routine. Don't wait until Memorial Day weekend.

I had the misfortune of watching one of my tires float. The factory weld that held the axle to the plate that holds the entire wheel mechanism failed. Fortunately I was launching and not retrieving. I rented a slip and pulled a trailer to A repair shop. Upon inspecting it, only one of the four spot weld actually formed a bond. The other three were just there for the ride. Thankfully it didn't let go while I was driving down the highway. And the trailer was only 2 years old.

Third choice. Block and jack the trailer up and put the tire on. Take one lug nut from the other tires to mount the tire.

I've had a tire disintegrate on a tandem axle trailer and I drug it about 80 miles, that's why you choose the extra axle. I had so many people try to flag me down while I blew past them.

I have not read into the comment section. But I believe that the other engineers (most) will agree. If they take a significant chunk of wood and strap it to the axel. They could continue to either the repair center, or house which is closest, and proceed with repairs. Or they can back into the water, reliving the trailer from the weight, of the boat.

Addition; As with off road expeditions. Sometimes trucks get stuck in deep sticky holes. One truck pulling out another, isn’t enough. Sometimes they need to dasychain multiple vehicles together. Then they can pull, gently away.

i've lost a wheel on a dual axle trailer before - ratchet strapped the broken axle up to the trailer and drove it home on three wheels. - i've also lost a wheel on a single axle trailer - had to put the boat on stands in the street and bring another trailer down to take the broken trailer home - then came back and picked up the boat. In case you didn't know - i'm poor.

It is sure obvious that nobody launches or trailers their boats by themselves like a lot of us. They sure make a lot of unnecessary work for themselves. But then again if they did, we wouldn't have this entertaining channel to watch 🙂
