I learnt something new today. I never knew about the origins of "The Lion sleeps tonight". When I watched Black is King, I felt inspired and emotional too. The production, the execution, the visuals...damn. My favourite scenes were the mummification scene, the mood for eva and my power.

What's very interesting is that when Beyonce was riding the horse while wearing the cow horn headdress with the solar disck inbetween I definitely think that she was referencing the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor who presided over love, beauty, music, dancing, ecstasy, intoxication(as she is credited for creating the first beer and wine) and the patroness of musicians and artisans. Also the feather that she was holding was a reference to Hathors husband the god Horus who was said to protect the pharaoh and the sun itself.

As an Egyptian, I loved Black is king even though I am not Black or even dark. Most Egyptians are not, we are not a Black majority country unlike the rest of the continent. I think because she called it Black is king, she did not have to include the North African countries due to the fact that we are not largely Black. However, I loved the Egyptian references as we can not talk about Africa without mentioning Egypt. I LOVED learning about the rest of Africa or at least the regions she showed and look forward to learning more.

True, I don't like that she does that. Africa is a very varied continent, that has many different people with different histories. Religion, class, culture, and many different countries have their own very complicated histories, cultures, etc.

Oh, to answer your question. The beginning message stood out to me. As you said, the imagery of Brown Skin Girl makes me cry every time. The song is beautiful. I loved the fact that she allowed African artist to eat with her. And they used their own music. I've not been a fan of Beyonce but this video movie was so unselfish and educational and will live forever for her children and ours. So many people shun giving homage to our ancestors due to Christianity. This movie was actually brought to me by my ancestors because I would've never watched it on my own. This was was the first year that I actually really gave thanks and offerings to them and during that time we watched this. It was amazing. I can watch it over and over. Like I said you said everything that I feel.

"Beyoncé is considered a Creole, passed on to her by her grandparents. Through her mother, Beyoncé is a descendant of many French aristocrats from the southwest of France, including the family of the Viscounts de Béarn since the 9th century, and the Viscounts de Belzunce." Not only is she mixed race, but she's also mixed with aristocrats, *not* slavers, her mother and her people were NEVER slaves. She came to the USA after slavery was outlawed. So she's not like most African Americans, again, she is Creole, and from an aristocratic family. She's done/from a better lineage than many white people in the USA

I wanted to hear more about the various symbolisms of a variety of African culture she touched upon like the various gods and goddesses and ancient stories that can be found throughout the movie. But a fair review in my opinion but not really one of a critical viewer but more of a fan. But hey imma fan too👊🏿

I sooooo agree, too many of us don't know our worth and wait on outsiders to teach us or show approval. We suffer the same fate as Africans on the continent and those in the diaspora. But when do we unite and stop acting like idiots towards each other? Black is King!

They said she was doing satanic rituals in this movie so I did not watch it.. then my mind just clicked like (they) must know who we are so (they) don't want us to know who we are or what we believe truly.. I have been robbed for so many years of truth about who I come from and I'm not ashamed to say I'm learning. I want this information in our schools.. everywhere!!
