Exactly! There are two phrases that fit Goku's first ever transformation into a Super Saiyan perfectly: *"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in a storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."* and the other phrase: *"Demons flee when a good man goes to war."* Plus, the build-up to this moment was done perfectly. We are only given hints about it, while any further information remains vague, primarily through Vegeta's internal monologues and thoughts referencing the old legend. First, Vegeta mentions the legend of the Super Saiyan after witnessing Goku wiping the floor with Recoome, even hinting that Goku himself could have become that legendary warrior. Then there's Vegeta's clear obsession with said legend hinting that it really may be more than a mere legend or myth. We see Vegeta mention the legend several more times, deluding himself that *he* will be the one to achieve the form, only for Frieza to snuff out Vegeta's hopes at bringing that legend to life by ruthlessly killing a battered, broken, and defenseless Vegeta. But then we see Goku holding his own even against Final Form Frieza, a feat that not even the newly revived and empowered Piccolo could achieve, only for it to later be revealed that Frieza is *still* holding back severely and isn't even using 1% of his full power, suddenly tipping the scales back into his favor heavily, forcing the team to pin all of their remaining hopes on Goku's Spirit Bomb. And yet, even the Spirit Bomb is insufficient to end Frieza, who then mercilessly strikes down Piccolo, before he then turns his attention to the defenseless Krillin, and before the horrified eyes of the helpless Goku & Gohan, Frieza mercilessly slaughters him. And then....it finally starts to happen. Goku displays more rage and anger than we've ever seen from him, we see him turning almost.... *feral* out of sheer rage and fury. The usually laid-back, cheerful, and gentle Goku absolutely seething with fury and outrage as the skies begin to darken, lightning arcs down from the clouds, and the surrounding seas begin to churn. And then Goku unleashes a scream of primal and unrestrained fury as he's enveloped in a golden light, and then we finally see for the first time the birth of this legendary "Super Saiyan" that Vegeta had been so desperately pinning his hopes on....in Goku. With Goku having become, in a way, an "avatar" of vengeance....for Vegeta, for Krillin, for the Saiyan race, and for all of the other helpless lives and worlds Frieza had mercilessly slaughtered without the slightest shred of remorse. And for the very first time, we finally get to see an expression of pure undisguised *fear* and *terror* on the face of the usually smug and arrogant Frieza. All of that build-up was done perfectly, and that is what made this moment so special, especially to those of us who grew up watching it as kids and teens.

This is what made Super Saiyan so great as a story arc. It wasn't just about the form or the power or anything, it was the foreshadowing in the form of the legend that made this transformation such an epic finale to this saga. Also, while the introduction to Broly and his Ikari forms were attempted to be portrayed as the "legendary" forms, it was the thing of Goku that was the legend, as the manga (through the voice of Vegeta) itself narrates the legend about Yamoshi, a Saiyan, who after seeing his best friend slain by the evil Saiyans he was fighting, broke all his barriers out of pure rage and transformed into this form. Goku's situation parallels this legend exactly. He was fighting an extremely evil yet powerful foe in Frieza. He was cornered against his opponent, and then saw his friend being killed by the same foe. His rage exploded and he went "feral" as you mentioned it. So we can say, Goku became the "legendary warrior" who transformed into the super saiyan, as was prophesized by Vegeta. Also, the feral nature could be seen in the fight between Goku and Frieza. While the calm and normal Goku would only seek to defeat and incapacitate his opponent, this time, he was fighting to cause pain, to injure, to kill Frieza, even going to the extent of taunting Frieza when he tried to run away.

I remember this like it was yesterday. I was in the 7th grade, roughly 12-13 years of age. It was a Thursday afternoon, DBZ aired M-Th on Toonami, I forget what replaced it on Friday’s. He went SSJ, and we all had to wait till Monday to see what happened, as the episode ended when he transformed and looked at Frieza. That scene is my top favorite scene in all of DBZ and this episode is my favorite along with the original Toonami version of "Ginyu Assault"! She didn’t know it was Goku! Towards episode 86, she started to realize that it may have been him as a super saiyan but it wasn’t confirmed until this episode! Goku had black hair for 95 episodes straight and the physical appearance of a super saiyan was never described in the show :)

This was really something. I remember in the 90's when this aired, I was still in middle school, so I was really young. I remember sneaking out of bed into my parent's bedroom across the hall to turn on the TV and watch Dragon Ball Z every night when my parents thought I was in bed. I got caught a few times because it aired at 10:00 PM, way passed my bedtime and they happened to walk in on me. For the most part though they were out in the living room and didn't go to bed until later, so I got away with it a lot. One such time was this episode. I'd seen Goku with yellow hair in a commercial but other than that I didn't know anything about Super Saiyan yet or that it was even real. When Goku transformed I started jumping on the bed, so my parents came running in and caught me. lmao Ultra Instinct managed to do the same thing to me when it happened. I have a tendency to try not to read the manga or spoil things for myself by looking at too much online about the anime I'm watching so I actually had no idea Ultra Instinct was coming aside from an interview with Toriyama a while back where he mentioned he had plans for a transformation with white hair. That alone didn't prepare me for the sheer epicness (not a real word), that a legend like Toriyama was about to leave in his wake.

You do realize that if it weren’t for those lines, these videos would be struck down in an instant, right? The fact that he’s able to upload the full episode is already a miracle so if these lines are what it takes to keep these full episodes coming it’s a small price to pay. Hell, in all honesty, this format is way better than what many other reactors will have to prevent getting copyrighted, ie missing video, bits of the screen all over the place, etc

I remember seeing this as a kid when it first premiered on Toonami, and back when there was no youtube or ways to see it dub online like you we do now. So for many of us 90s kids Toonami was our first introduction to Dragon Ball Z and when this happened it was major goosebumps. I've said this many times but the English Dub with Bruce Faulconer music is way superior than the original Japanese Sub and Music, and it sucks cause in most streaming sites it's only dub in english but has the original Japanese music. Also we didn't watch original Dragon Ball until Dragon Ball Z was already in the Buu Saga. I remember how they would premier Dragon Ball for the first time in English Dub and it would aire side by side DBZ Buu Saga.

Bruce falconer is always the greatest way to watch DBZ it's how most of us remember it as a kid anyway on toonami years ago kai came WAYY later and kinda watered down the epic theme songs to go with the epic scene like this and ssj3 theme
