I was born in America and come to Serbia every year and I wish I could live here forever.. fuxk the money and all those bs reasons people want to be in America.. the LIFESTYLE and quality of life here is so much better and there's actual soul and culture here.. I came to visit my fiancée for a couple months and now I ended up staying for 6months. Yes, healthcare here is better- I always get all of my medical things done here cuz it would be 10x more expensive in the US.. my favorite things are - food, the fact that people are relaxed and hang out at cafes and can actually just chill and life isn't always on the go and fast, healthcare, traditions, people are nicer, there's culture.. there are always downsides and of course money is one but people here figure it out.. we don't have a bunch of money but we value life and happiness... everyone that comes here say they love it! People don't think of Serbia as a travel destination but once they come they never want to leave! I fucking love Belgrade! 💕💕

When you have a ton of money, its cool to live ANYWHERE
@lazar29496 жыл бұрын
Living here is perfect if you have enough money. If you don't have, you will need to work, and working here is not really a good option. Most tourists like this place mostly because they came here with enough money to enjoy in everything that this country can provide them. But there is a lot of serbians who have not traveled anywhere, sometimes not even outside their cities. Sad reality, but WELCOME :)
@azureablaze87216 жыл бұрын
That is so true. But they do not realize that (most of them, because they only see what they want to and those are only nice things) and if they do realize probably don't care...
@snakechrmr63986 жыл бұрын
+Lazar.....Living anywhere is perfect IF you have money. If you don't have skills in demand working anywhere is not a good option. Yes, wages and salaries are low in Serbia. But so are prices. A nice furnished flat outside Belgrade costing €200/month ($245US) would likely cost $800-$1000+ (€651 - €815) in the US. A fruit salad I buy in Belgrade for 250 dinars would cost $8-$10+ anywhere in the US. Won't even bring up comparison cost of healthcare and health insurance. Everyone should embrace the tourists. Hope they stay in the most expensive hotels and rent the most expensive cars. Eat at the best restaurants and spend as much money as possible enjoying their stay here. Hopefully, they and their friends come back many, many times leaving even more money in the country. Serbia is a beautiful country rich in culture and history. And the ćevapčići and rakija? Yikes!
@dejana19766 жыл бұрын
The prices are not that low actually. If you want to buy clothes, you will pay as much as you would in the US. Same with food prices in supermarkets. Many Serbian people work for 200-300 per month and with that sallary you can only rent an apartment and pay your electricity bill maybe.
@snakechrmr63986 жыл бұрын
Those same people earning €200- €300 in Serbia would be making $7.50 - $8.00/hr in the US. Many times having to work 2 different jobs because of the 32 hour per week limit requiring employers to provide benefits. 40 hrs X $8.00 = $320/wk. Less 25% for taxes and other deductions leaves $240/wk take home. $600/mo (maybe ?) for a small unfurnished 1 bedroom apt. $50/mo for elec, $25/mo for water/trash and at least $200/mo for barely there medical insurance. $240 X 4 wks = $960 - $600 = $360 - $50 = $310 - $25 = $285 - $200 = $85 to eat, buy clothes and live. Maybe 5 work holidays a year and probably none or possible 3-4 days vacation/yr AFTER the first year of employment. You still have to buy furniture and there's cable/internet which I have friends paying over $100/ month for. Cell phone plans are expensive IF you have sufficient credit in the US to qualify. What about a car? Car insurance? Public transport isn't as popular of as efficient as in Europe. And we're talking USD which right now $360 USD = €292. The grass might look greener from here but once you get locked into life in the US you'll understand why people say in the US people live to work and in Europe people work to live. Don't believe me? Only cost $1300 or so to get there. Write and let everybody know how great it turned out.
@dejana19766 жыл бұрын
EuropeOn2Wheels An Office Assistant in an audit company in the US works for 8$ per hour? Nurses? People in bookkeeping agencies? Even if that was correct, the salaries are 4 times bigger than here, but our prices are not 4 times cheaper than in the US. I don't think the money grows on trees in America, but sure it is easier to work and live there. I have a friend in the US, she is struggling with 2 jobs, but she says she would rather die than come back to Serbia. My electricity bill is 40eur, trash and water 60eur, single room apartment 150eur. 40+60+150=250eur 300-250=50eur I have 50eur left for living and clothes. I need 20eur more for my cell phone bill, and 30eur more for my cable tv/internet. I need 30eur more for public transport too. With all my respect, I can't believe that office assistant in an audit company in the US struggles this much and has to choose if she is going to eat this month or pay for her internet connection.

Hi Girl Guitar Passport, I hope you wont mind my input on the subject, 1. I am 6ft6 (198cm) Serbian-Canadian, when I was living in Belgrade even though I was among the tallest there I would still see other guys that are almost my height or taller than me on a daily basis. Then I moved to Toronto, (been to NYC, Miami, Chicago, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Milwaukee as well), I am yet to see an Indian or Asian dude that is taller, and I only saw very few white or black dudes of my height.. So no question, Serbs are darn huge:) 2. US, the culture of individualism and privacy, Serbia, the culture of collectivism and socializing. Bashta = Patio in the open (kind of) One major difference is that patios in US are meant for exclusive group of friends in the backyard while bastas are for pretty much anyone. 3. Health Care in US... a place where you can become sick and go bankrupt at the same time!! Go Bernie, what else could I say:)) 4. Nothing compares to the energy of Europe! Nothing! Making money in North America is usually not an issue ( I understand that's something most of my fellow Serbians struggle a lot with) but finding and doing things for your soul, seeing friends and feeling fulfilled very often is an issue. Cant wait to spend 3 months this summer in Serbia and Spain to recharge my batteries:) 5. Serbia is positioned great geographically but still not as well connected to the rest of the World as it should.. weird, eh? Pozdrav:)

Here is why...With a monthly paycheck in USA you can live a normal life in Serbia for one year
@snakechrmr63986 жыл бұрын
You could live a year on $1000USD (€811, 96,220 RSD)? Don't eat, drink, have electricity or water and with a €100/mo apt you'll run out of money a few days after 8 months. Or maybe give yourself €11 to eat for those 8 months. 11/8 = €1.37/month for food. Well, except that $1500 airline ticket to get back to Serbia will blow a hole in that year's budget.

Dear EuropeOn2Wheels, I'm a Russian American, I retired after 25 yrs in the US, have a nice $3000 pension. Nothing to do anymore here. Need to relocate, to get away of being robbed by health insurance, uncaring doctors, stupid prices for medicine. Want to see real people, not American type smiles around me. Have a place in Moscow, where I lived until my 40, but climate there... And other complications... Looked at South America, visited Mexico (no way to live there), and Ecuador (pleasant, inexpensive). But in Ecuador - earthquakes, recent influx of desperate Venezuelans, never know what's next. And, suddenly, I found videos about Croatia. Do you think, I can find a safe life there being a 68 years of age (tall, still strong), single? I won't need to work, volunteering, maybe (I was an ESL teacher in the US). I'll need a nice big apartment, upscale with a guard service (after I rent for awhile). What's also very appealing - it seems I'll be able NOT TO DRIVE. I enjoy driving, but am becoming older. In Ecuador public transportation is great, cheap. What about Croatia? How much is the bus from Dubrovnik , for example, to Beograd? I'd like to travel in Croatia and to other countries (Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal...) With such plans - will it be a good idea to make Serbia (Dubrovnik or, maybe, less touristy place but with beaches, too?) as a permanent, inexpensive to maintain home (In the US my house, all paid off, costs me $600-650/m with all utilities and property tax, and every repair is a financial hit) Please, share your view, be a friend. I so need an advice, having no one to understand me, here in the US or in Russia. I thought of Portugal, but crime is serious, and even speaking Spanish I doubt I'll feel good with Portuguese around me. I worked with Yugoslavians in Moscow in the 80s, am not afraid of serbo-croatian, and English is Universal. Please, email me. egr5458@gmail.com You'll make one lost old woman so happy!

To find a job... It is an American word, People of other countries say how to live better.... It is funny but true. In America people work for money, if they have money they can have life , if they don't, They think there is no at life... Well in other countries people think how to have better life, not just to make money, they may have many more ways to have a good life for exam, some have many micro food production sources, as well as money sources, they already know how to be healthy and have education without pays so much money like USA people do. People have houses in other countries but in USA banks own their homes. Student in USA must pay education loans sometimes for lifelong. like they do with housing and health care. Because in the USA people are depended not independent, but they think they are free. They called themselves free people, But I think there is no freedom in USA. everything cost money, nothing is for free.

American expressions are: Do you have a job?. How much money do you earn? Do you have health insurance? How did you get your student loan? How is your Bank? How much is you car loan, How much is you house loan. Etc.... all those are American words(expressions, made in the USA). But in other countries We do not value people for those word,. We noticed the persona, If the person is educated or not; if the person is healthy or not. Where they live and how they live. What they do for life. What is their profession and How do they get something interesting for life...etc. .. So We can noticed who has more freedom. Obviously in other places not in the USA.

If you have money, it's better to live in Serbia than in the US, if you have money on the account,or just do not have to work,but if you have to work to earn a living in Serbia, than you have big fucking problems,you say that Egypt is a couple of hours by plane from Belgrade, that it is Crete for an hour and a half,that Holland is on a few hours of flight by plane,but believe me that 90% of Serbs have never traveled by plane and at least 70% work for a salary between 200 and 400 euros,so everything is relative.

Your observation about "baštas" iz spot on. You mentioned in another video that you're from Maryland (my buddy is from Bowie in PG County) so your impression is not surprising. I grew up in Santa Monica CA and the first place with outdoor dining opened in '81 (Cafe Casino, a French chain) while all restaurants and in particular bars had covered windows or even painted black. A general american neurosis but an absurdity for a beachtown. In my youth I frequently visited Serbia and marvelled at the Mediterranean mix of languidity and passion coupled with Slavic soulfulness (which you aptly described vis-a-vi Russia) while here we have pale imitations fueled by the Hollywood elite's seasonal mimicry of trends gathered in Cannes and in turn permeating society I am amazed at your perceptivness which I laud.

I totally get what you men by the lifestyle! It is the exact same in Canada as you describe the US being and I absolutely do not identify with the lifestyle here at all I am completely miserable. I have only experienced different in the small cultural communities in the larger cities here, where they keep their social customs alive even in a foreign country through sheer will and or number of people. My friend just moved to Germany not long ago, got married and completely loves it there for these exact reasons you describe. Conversely another good friend from Mexico moved to Canada a year ago, lives in the most populated province in the most populated city and became quite depressed with how relatively cold and distant the people are here, the relative lack of social interaction and not being able to make friends the same as she would in her own country even in a strange new place there. It is unbelievably evident when you open your eyes how the true "west" is just a cattle farm for people, and most are just dumb sheep
@eslandagooderamos49306 жыл бұрын
Hiroki, you're so right. My American father lived in eastern Europe. He loved his country from a distance, enjoyed really warm people of former Soviet Union, not the regime, though... I lived there with a dream to go to my father's country, at least to visit. Ended up "visiting" for 28 years (a mess in Russia, much better pay kept me here). I was so busy, working two jobs, supporting family members back in Russia, my son here). Now, retired, with no more responsibilities and ok pension - I can't stand it here. And facing old age (I'm 68), I'm scared. Health care here is a big mafia, medical care and medicine are ridiculous (for everything you need a prescription, visit to a doctor $300+ without insurance, antibiotics prices start from $100 - in Russia basic Amoxicillin is $3-5, depending on the producer - Russia, Netherlands, Switzerland, etc., for 20 pills, US - $130. It's offensive to me, I feel like I'm being robbed all the time here. I need to exit. Please, you seem like a good friend, you communicate with people, it's a forgotten thing in the US - everybody is friendly, and nobody are friends, really, just casual aquantances, colleagues, neighbors. Communication is only if job requires, and the rest is all small talk. All positive, all empty. People in center's of big cities, if walking - all preoccupied, rushing. In smaller cities and towns you see only people in cars, only homeless and boms are walking. I looked at South America, fell in love with Ecuador. It's cheap, but Latin America is not politically stable, look at Venezuelans! And Mexico - tourist Haven, but also the one for drug cartels... Should I look at some nice coastal town in Serbia, or Croatia? I, probably will live there like a queen with my pension, just average in the US. Which nice coastal city is safe for an old lady, who is fluent in English/Russian, and also speaks Spanish? I need a not so expensive base to live my dream of several times a year vacations to other countries and continents. Please, share with me your thoughts about it? Imagine me being your mother, stuck in the culture she doesn't even share. Being quite alone in my plans - family's gone, Russian good college friends want me there (while I feel like I'd like to help them out of there!). Be my adviser, I want to hear different pieces of advice from likewise thinking people. egr5458@gmail.com All the best for you and yours.

@@eslandagooderamos4930 All coastal towns on Adriatic coast in Montenegro and Croatia are very safe and open for everyone (i am from Serbia, but i have house in Petrovac na moru in Montenegro), if you are fluent in Russian for example Montenegrins (or Serbians, 50-50) will treat you with high respect i can assure you, also in Montengro now almost all restourants and stores have menus and signs in Russian and English and almost all younger population that work there speak English. @@eslandagooderamos4930 people in usa have wrong image how things work here in the balkans and europe in general, it is very civilized society, most of the people are highly educated and very friendly and social. I am glad that you like Balcan soo much, I like the USA, what I notice or it seems to me like that is that people from Canada are way too different from those from the USA. Their calmer, more sophisticated, and they appreciate educated people. I am not saying that people from the US do not but in Canada that is more in the spotlight. What do you say about that?
@sjc34266 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivana, I have lived in Canada and also the USA for many years. There are a lot of similarities... but also many differences between the two countries. The USA has a much larger diverse population and geography. If you travel through America, you will find a melting pot of various cultures and attitudes. Canada on the other hand, has more British and French culture. Maybe that’s why you find Canadians somewhat more sophisticated. Canadians in my opinion tend to be more reserved and formal in their manner, as compared to Americans. There are a lot of sophisticated Americans, but most don’t act or come across that way, probably because America is a more informal and casual society.(smile)

You got it.... That is very true. In USA Food is commercial , I mean food is produced only to make the producer richer, but not to make people healthier. In Easter countries of Europe food is for people's health. In USA everything cost so much, but in other countries Education is free, Medicine is free and Housing is almost free, I mean the primary necessities of humans do not cost an arm and a leg. Most people in the USA are sick, because the controllers think people are slaves (money makers or robots). In USA hospitals, Universities, banks,etc control peoples lives. I mean they rule the destiny of its citizens. Most USA people are in debts but in other countries people are not. Everything that I said is covered, I mean hidden. A person living in USA can not notice it. Only when some one from USA living in other countries can notices it.

Looking at NBA, NFL, NHL, WWE and other guys from TV, I was thinking North Americans(both Black and White) are mostly giants just as men around me(Eastern Europeans), at >190 and >100 kg. Am I wrong about that? In last 10-20 years I noticed increase of obesity among people in Serbia. I believe it's because of our opening to the Western way of life. Now we have cheap, low quality, greasy and oversweetened food everyday and everywhere around us and we are accepting it instead of our traditional diet where high-calorie dishes was reserved for celebrations only.

+Jason.....I spent most of my last 25 work years living/working outside the US so I was in for very few surprises. Also from Texas (farm outside San Antonio) we share the same views as to the current situation in the US except I believe obesity in women is way over 50%. But 3 countries in 1 year looks more like you are trying to be a permanent tourist than trying to find a home. That's 4 months per country and you can hardly learn the language basics in 4 months. Or understand the history, culture or even make any good friends. I would submit if you want to find a foreign country to call home you do a few things before showing up on their soil. First, research the country, culture and history. Then research some more. Decide if it's a place you even want to be. Then sit down and write what you expect from the country and also what you expect to bring to the country. If that list is badly imbalanced you need to look for another country. After those are all positive then spend at least a month learning the basics of their language full time. Even poorly speaking a country's language goes a long way in making people want to help you succeed. Expat life isn't for everybody but if it fits it fits pretty nicely.
