Serbo-Croatian is a political term from the 19th century and today it is considered offensive by some. Yugoslav or West South Slavic is more accurate correct term. Bosniaks call it Bosnian. Croats call it Croatian. Serbs call it Serbian. All have the right to self determination and all 3 are rooted in West South Slavic with many loan words from Latin, Turkish and German.

True Croats are not from the Balkans. Sava is the natural border, so anyone born north of the river Sava is not from the Balkan peninsula. Northern Croats despise the Balkan mentality, there is not much else they despise more.

Before the fightings in the 1990s it was called hrvatsko-srpski in Croatia and srpsko-hrvatski in all other ex-YU republics. Basicaly you could use all the words from either one except in Croatia Latin letters were primary and in Serbia Cirilic letters. Also Croatian write foreign names in foreign manner i.e. John Wayne and in Serbian is written Džon Vejn. There are differences in sentence structure,order of words and in expressions which are more german oriented in Croatia and more Russian or Turkic based in other republics. Slovenia is a separate case but they had to learn Serbo-Croatian as well as Macedonians and Kosovars in their schools and mostly military service which was mandatory.

Simply coin of history put Montenegro and Serbia closer than what we r both with Croatia. Difference it's in church aswell Croatians are Catholics and Montenegrians and Serbians are Serbian orthodox. That is a consequence of different empires ruled regions but over the time it painted national indentity that much that religion can't be separated from national identity today one of main reasons of collapse of Yugoslavia. All of them have their own charm I loved them all and hate them in same time and same quantity. 😂
