You have done very well Becky. Your knowledge of camping and hiking in all kinds of weather along with how to survive when the going gets tough am sure has inspired many to get off their couch and get moving outside to enjoy the great outdoors. Guess we should be happy that there is an internet. Without it, any contact with others may not have ever happened. So thinking computer technology has been some what good for the interaction with others. This is another super outstanding and informative video. Carry on young lady. Reach for all the heights you can.

Something interesting you could do on a hike is to check oiut your local library, university ones are best, for old maps, 100 years or more. Can't get these on google often. They can give added intrest on old ruins, walls, paths etc you might come to.

Thanks for this interesting and comprehensive video. Perhaps I may add a couple of tips? The boil in the bag type meals are, in my experience, much nicer to eat than the dehydrated ones. They also save on fuel and water. You just need to bring the sachet to the boil, and simmer for a few minutes. As the food has not been in contact with the water, you use it to make your hot drink. Eat out of the sachet - no washing up. I was once hiking in the Cairngorms when my gas stove stopped working. A tiny grain of sand had blocked the jet. Although not quite as good as when warmed, the sachet meals are still palatable cold. I cleared the stove blockage when I got home, with an air hose. Since then, I have always taken one of the tiny titanium stoves as a back-up. To really get the maximum benefit of the great outdoors, I recommend hiking the wild country in the North of Scotland. You may well have to carry a week's food, as there just are no shops. Practice your skills in a tamer environment first, but try the Country to the North of Ullapool - you will never forget the fabulously beautiful wild scenery, and starry skies.

Great informative video Becks. It's also worth remembering there are Bothies. People should check out the Mountain Bothy Association (MBA) website for info & rules & consider becoming a member. It's possible to plan a multi-day hike staying at different bothies, especially in Scotland, though it's probably wise to carry a tent in case the bothy is full or unexpectedly closed.
@Onlinesully
@Onlinesully 3 жыл бұрын
Oh right. Are they like hostels along the trails ?
@michaelatkinson8291
@michaelatkinson8291 3 жыл бұрын
@@Onlinesully Hi. Bothies are really just basic emergency shelters really, often an old shepherds hut maintained & renovated by the MBA. Some have wooden sleeping platforms but others are more basic & you sleep on the floor. They are free to use & the only locks are on the outside of the door for when you leave & the place is empty. They are sometimes shown on maps but not always. Some have (very) basic toilets but usually it's a case of taking the shovel provided & burying it at least 200 yards away. Some of the more well known & popular ones include Corrour bothy in the Lairig Ghru beneath the Devils Point in the Cairngorms.

Michael Atkinson Hi Thanks for telling me all this. They sound really marvellous places. I'm guessing you've used them yourself too ? Do you trek a lot ?
@michaelatkinson8291
@michaelatkinson8291 3 жыл бұрын
@@Onlinesully Hi. Yeah I've done a few 3 or 4 day walks in Scotland & stayed in several bothies.They take a bit getting used to especially if you're alone. Read the guestbook in one, Culra Lodge in the Highlands & this guy said he was alone & suddenly there was a loud bang on the door at 1am. I would have freaked, but he tentatively opened the door & there was a white horse from the estate & it had kicked the door ! Some have their resident mice so you have to be careful where you store your food. Walk mainly in the Summer months in Weardale & the Lake District usually as I can drive over from my home in Co Durham for the day. Scotland is brilliant too - especially the Cairngorms.

I stopped buying expensive boots years ago. In the Scottish Highlands in the Autumn, Winter and Spring I wear wellingtons. In the summer I wear sandals without the back straps as I do all year round in the Sahara. My Merrells last about 50 000 kms there until they are exhausted. After around 10 000 kms they become comfortable.

Great video and it always helps when a pretty young lady, who is somewhat on the beginning of her own journey, explains it to others that might be interested.They can relate more. One important skill I think every hiker should begin with is some basic survival skills. I know you've got that covered yourself, but a lot of beginning and even experienced hikers don't. That's the reason why, out of all outdoor people, (day)hikers need Search and Rescue the most and are also the most likely to die on the trail. They fill up a backpack with all this expensive, light weight, high tech gear but forget to carry a loud whistle around their neck 24/7. So they walk into the woods with their toilet paper to do a #2 and now can't find their way back to base camp where their back pack with all their beautiful gear is and no way to signal for help.
@Onlinesully
@Onlinesully 3 жыл бұрын
gosh. didn't realise so many accidents were due to people taking a number 2 without a whistle. that's quite scary stuff.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 3 жыл бұрын
@@Onlinesully It is actually very scary that people spend $600 on a tent but not $2 on a loud whistle. It is very scary that some people spend so much time preparing for a hike and not any time learning some basic survival skills. That's why hikers need search and rescue the most and this will only change if they get the bill presented for that search and rescue.

It's more than high protein. It has high carbs, calories, protein, and a good amount of fats. It usually has good amounts of vitamins and minerals as well. Here's a link that shows the ten best mass gaining powders. It's as close to being a full meal in powder form. It would be perfectly fine for a day hike.
