To be fair to Tegan, going to a cricket match in the 1920's, then going to a fancy dress party and dancing the Charleston was probably more of a hoot than the carnage of this story. Her departure is abrupt, but makes sense and is played well by Fielding and Davison. You might have noticed that Leela was left out of the flashbacks to former companions. A clip of Leela had been selected for the montage, but was left out by accident.

It's easy to forget, watching via streaming services over months rather than years or decades, just how long people hung around. Tegan's sudden departure masks the fact that Janet Fielding is (if only in terms of years) one of the longer-running companions. She made her debut in 'Logopolis' part one on 28th February 1981 and 'Resurrection of the Daleks' part 2 went out on 15th February 1984. That's an impressive stretch by modern standards. And for those of us who had more or less grown up with her, it marked a turning point. Things, for various reasons, were never going to be the same again...

I also say the scene of the Doctor threatening to kill Davros was scary, I like millions of Dr Who fans knew there was no way on earth or mars the Doctor would ever go through with killing Davros like the 4th Doctor could not go through with killing the Daleks in Genesis of the Daleks when he was outside the incubation chamber where the Dalek creatures were been born to be placed in the travel machines Davros named the Daleks. The 4th Doctor was afraid of committing murder and genocide despite the fact he knew what the Daleks would evolve, into in the future .

There are so many things going on in this story, I saw it a few times before it all made sense in my head. It had a huge guest cast, and nearly all of them died! At the time, how Davros survived was a mystery to us as well when he reappeared. We felt sure that that was the end of him - killed by a virus, then blown to smithers. Frankly, I don't see the point of killing him off here, only to resurrect him later on.

Yeah, that's one of the most annoying motifs in Doctor Who: an enemy gets destroyed apparently beyond any hope of escape only to reappear, usually without any explanation. There was a strike going on at the time and the crew stopped exactly at a certain time. So the ladder was kept there. No one would touch it. So they just used it in the story. It used to happen in live tv all the time. One of my favorites happened once in an episode of Rosanner. Dan was supposed to be upset and slammed a cabinet shut. It fell off the hinges and wasnt supposed to happen. John Goodman without missing a beat just said well now there is something else I have to fix. It was about time for Tegan to go. This was her 19th story with only Jamie, up to this point, having more stories than Tegan - and only Ian, Barbara, Jamie, Sarah Jane and Jo having more episodes than her as a companion. Did you notice that, due to a production error, Leela was missed out of the sequence of past companions? This story is another 8/10 from me (my 4th consecutive one) it's a very consistent season so far. :)

In a sense leaving out Leela may have been a 'good' error as that could imply the Doctor deliberately blocked out his memories of her as a last line of defence since she is currently on Gallifrey at this time and could probably sense that something was wrong with the Dalek clone Doctor if she encountered the clone & the cloned companions, especially if 'the Doctor' had no memory of her and she could alert the Time Lord of this, note Leela never met the Daleks during her time with the Doctor but the Doctor probably told her about them at some point between adventures... Incidentally, this scene reminded me of a brief but similar scene in Day of the Daleks, I wonder if this was in part a call back to that..?

I think in terms of broadcast dates of first and last regular episodes, Tegan is the longest. February 1981-February 1984. 3 years. Jamie only did 2-and-a-half years between December 1966 and June 1969, about the same as Jo Grant (January 1971 to June 1973). Sarah-Jane is inbetween, December 1973 to October 1976, 2 years 10 months.

Just so you know, no spoilers here but it'll be helpful for the future, they start changing the length of episodes. Doctor Who had moved from a Saturday slot and was now twice weekly on Thursdays and Fridays with 25 min episodes. This 45 min episode structure was done for Resurrection of the Daleks as the normal timeslot clashed with Olympics events. It's then taken up next season regularly before returning back to 25 mins for the following seasons.

This might sound terrible but I wish we had more Dalek stories like this in the modern era because it shows how dangerous and deadly the Daleks can be and as an audience I feel threatened watching this which is how you meant to feel there was alot of body count which shows real life situations that you may or may not get out of alive. As you probaly would know by now it is no surprise that Davros always gets out somehow as we saw him betrayed and exterminated by the Daleks back in "Genesis" only to survive in "Destiny". I was very sad to see Tegan as she was the last connection to Tom but to be fair she was in it for 3 years and was the third longest serving companion after Jamie and Sarah Jane Smith so she had quite a good run. Terry Molloy kills it as Davros he was superb and chilling and that speech is just terrifying.

I agree. I'm in the minority of considering _Evolution of the Daleks_ and _Victory of the Daleks_ two of the best modern era Dalek stories, as both more closely capture the essence of a Dalek DW story. Most of the original series Dalek stories provided a motivation for the Daleks' actions - digging up Davros in _Destiny of the Daleks,_ for example. The modern era has often relied simply on, "Daleks invade Earth again because...Daleks."

Poor Tegan goes through hell in this one.

Tegan was in 19 stories ! Fourth of the epic 3 season woman companions who ran for most of the time from Jo. Because the stories were shorter in this period, she is behind Jo + Sarah in episode count (NB her googled episode count of 64 is a wrong comparison, because you need to convert 5 Doctors and this story into 25-min episodes, which adds 5, = 69, ahead of Romana.) But in number of stories, to here Tegan is actually top ! The woman companion, + second to Jamie the companion, in the longest serving number of stories. Jamie 20, Tegan 19, Sarah 18, Barbara + Ian 16, Romana in both faces 16, Jo 15. That's how important she is.

It’s just crossed my mind that this would have been the first Dalek story I ever saw, not counting the Dalek in 5 Doctors. That being said, I already knew what Daleks were, so it’s possible I saw the edited re-run of Genesis in 1982, although if I did I don’t remember. I used to have a recurring childhood dream that I had an adventure in those old brick warehouses. Then I’d enter an ornate wooden cabinet at the bottom of the stairs in one of the buildings which turned out to be TARDIS. I’d almost forgotten about that! Hell, your reactions are triggering some memories! Interestingly, in this episode Davros knows about the Doctors TARDIS, and knows of the TIme Lords well enough to know that the Doctor is “like all time lords”. How does he know? The first time we meet Davros he doesn’t even know about life on other planets. Then the Daleks leave him for dead in the ruins of the Kaled city for who knows how long. Then he’s revived, but shortly after gets frozen in suspended animation for 90 years. Then he’s revived here, and knows about the TARDIS, which he’s never seen, and the Time Lord, who he’s never encountered or even heard of before. Never mind - I still love this story.

Hi Marie-Clare in this Dalek serial the way the Daleks are killed off, with the Movellan virus which causes foam to come out I imagine it was foam rom Fire Extinguishers , and also the amount of people killed off in this serial is similar to what happened in the Cyberstory Earthshock when several humans soldiers and civilians were killed off and slain by the Cybermen and even their black androids . In both stories there is a high bodycount, of people been killed off here and there. The war between the Daleks Davros,s Daleks and the black Supreme Dalek Daleks was a lift from the Evil of the Daleks with the 2nd Doctor when he engineered the civil war between humanised Daleks and normal Daleks. I also notice with the flashback scene it was similar to the mind analysis machine the Daleks strapped the 3rd Doctor to and in that story we saw images of the first and second Doctors here we see images of the previous Doctors and their companions as well. I could not blame Tegan for running away at the end of this story given how upset and disgusted at the violence and the deaths she had seen . The male villain Lytton survived and went back into his police Sergeants uniform and rejoined his police buddies.

Well, your hunch that someone would leave at the end was correct, you just got the wrong person! I think it probably was time for Tegan to go - she was one of the longest serving classic series companions, and Janet Fielding certainly felt there wasn’t much space for further character development. Her leaving scene is well done, though does feel a bit tacked on. As the story was originally written for the previous season, it was a late addition and the scripts were not revised to build up to the departure, which is a shame. As for the story, I would probably give it 7.5. It looks good, has a very gritty feel and some nice direction and performances, but the plot is overcomplicated and the Doctor-Davros confrontation, while electrifying, fizzles out disappointingly. Still, for the fourth season in a row the fans got treated to another big flashback sequence, though a pity they forgot about Leela…

I personally don't have an issue with the Doctor being willing to kill Davros. As he says himself, if the Daleks are able to use his knowledge to become a threat to the universe again, then millions of innocents will die because of it. And imprisoning Davros to a more humane fate has proven to fail already, and would be problematic at best when Davros is in the heart of Dalek territory now. If I have an issue with the scene, it's the way Davros' "you deny what is real" almost sounds like the author's honest opinion of the Doctor as a hopeless pascifist utopianist in denial at how the universe really works. And that's just not what the Doctor was in his first four incarnations.

This story has some great moments but it's let down by some poor acting in episode 1 and the violence is so casual that it loses all impact after a while. It just looks like a load of underpaid extras standing around waiting to be shot, doing a dance routine and collapsing on the floor. What we needed was shots back to the Daleks in which they're holding up scorecards for each performance. "And the winner is Colonel Archer for the Karate Chop Collapse with 7, 8, 6, 9"

During the companion’s flashback sequence, did anyone realise that the only companion they didn’t show was Leela? The production team messed up big time there! For me, personally, as a 20 year old in 1984, this was the worst Dalek story I’d seen, since I saw my first one, Day of the Daleks, back in 1972. Death and Destiny were bad, especially as they came before and after the magnificent Genesis, but even those two stories weren’t as poor as this story IMO. The worst culprit was the writer and script editor, Eric Saward, who could usually turn out a half decent script (Visitation, Earthshock), but this one was all over the place! The script had too many ideas, with none of them executed as well as they could be! Why did the Daleks need Davros? If they could design and implement a germ warfare virus, capable of wiping out everything on Spiridon (Planet of the Daleks), then surely their scientists could have come up with an antidote to the Movellan virus themselves? Why did the Daleks need Lytton and his troopers, when we learn in Nu Who’s ‘Dalek’ episode, that one single Dalek could wipe out the 1 million inhabitants of Salt Lake City? The most ludicrous part of the script is having the Daleks wanting the Doctor and his companions duplicates return to Gallifrey to kill the High Council! Why now? Don’t they have enough on their plate, dealing with a virus that can kill them, as well as dealing with opposition Daleks? It’s as if Saward came up with the duplicate story just so JNT could show a companion flashback! The script also had too many characters/guest stars in it, who had nothing meaningful to do, only for all of them to be killed off (except Lytton!) I also never understood why all this death and destruction was the catalyst for Tegan to leave the Doctor! She lost her Aunt to the Master in her first story, saw everyone good die, including her friend Adric, in Earthshock (another high body count story), and saw the same happen in Warriors of the Deep! Oh, and she was twice possessed by the Mara - and it’s only now that she wants to leave? Just think it was a poor way to write her out! Now, had The Awakening followed Resurrection, then Tegan finding her grandfather might have given her a better reason to leave and settle down, but this sudden, abrupt leaving just didn’t make sense at all! Even the Doctor didn’t seem that upset!

The mind copy process was really killing the Doctor? Painful, maybe, but it's not like the process erases his memories or anything. They would have killed him either way, but it seems too melodramatic. It's still a GREAT story when all is said and done, just a bit overreaching IMHO.

I don't think this is a great story. It's a bit all over the place. With a stronger narrative, the high body count may have been earned, but it wasn't here. Davros is being shoehorned into each dalek story and nothing is really added to either them or him. I was never overly fond of Tegan, but her leaving was emotional. Her reason was good as a rebuke of the Doctor, with a touch of meta narrative about the show. It's probably only a five from me.

Tegan's gone! Finally! the most complainy companion that ever there was. She says at the end "It's stopped being fun Doctor." When was it ever fun for you Tegan? Both times you were a companion all you ever did was complain. The only time you smiled was when you were possessed by the Mara. You had a sour face in every single adventure. Compare you to Sarah-Jane who simply loved being with the Doctor, Sarah was always smiling. Tegan just complained the whole time. No offence to actress Janet Fielding who created Tegan wonderfully but Tegan never had fun travelling with the Doctor. Maybe it's time to have a companion who enjoys it. We shall see.

Personally, I really like it, but apparently Eric Saward derided his own scripts as some of the worst ever written for the series.
