If you take the time to read more about this breed of dog and don’t make hasty conclusions solely from videos you watch on the Internet, you will quickly find out that this dog definitely cannot be called friendly, except perhaps to its owner and his family. I have been watching RBT breeders for a very long time and unfortunately very few people cope with this breed. They are overly suspicious and they literally hate strangers. Dog handlers in Russia who have experience working with RBT are categorically trying to convince people who are choosing a puppy for any purpose to abandon the idea of getting an RBT. By the way, I love this breed madly, but I cannot take responsibility for possible problems.@@jayltee

My neighbours had one and he was also very friendly even though I too thought he was huge, but I was a child back then. In Russia we too think of terriers as small to medium dogs, but the strongest association is with the curly tough fur, so a big mixed dog would still "classify" as a terrier if it feels like one.)

When I worked in a veterinary clinic, one such guy came in with sore ears. He had a wonderful character, but during the treatment of his ears the doctor ordered him to “lie down” and we, two assistants, sat on his back :) because this was the only way to persuade him to endure the procedure. And then there was a touching moment when the doctor allowed him to go to the door and he saw the owners standing outside. And this giant adult dog stomped his hind legs like a child because he couldn’t wait to get back to his owners!

BRTs are amazing dogs! I've owned one who I made sure was well-socialized as a puppy. I left him in a semi-show cut but always put his facial hair up in a topknot. He eventually became too big and strong...AMAZINGLY strong...and as I'm a bit older I worried about being pulled over while walking him and breaking a hip. I found him a new home with an experienced BRT owner and she's done amazing work with him. He's earned multiple obedience titles and just competed in the invitationals Fast CAT competition in Orlando, as he was the fastest BRT in the country in 2022! They are very serious when they say this is a breed for experienced dog owners and trainers only, and like all the Working breeds they need a job. Love you, Illya!

I am so glad this breed has finally been featured on this channel. I have a soon to be 10 year old Black Russian. Prior to having him, we had Newfoundlands. My (now) late husband wanted a "lower maintenance" dog than a Newfoundland. Low maintenance isn't something to expect. Socialisation is a life-long training session. They are VERY distrusting of strangers (as am I), and being so fluffy and adorable people, especially children, will disregard my demands to stay way from him and touch him. He always growls at them. Because I have put in the work with life long socialisation and training, he has never bitten anyone besides someone who attempted to invade our home, whereas he did his job protecting his property and family by tearing out the backs of that guy's knees before the guy fired his gun at any of us. The "fau" that runs down his face came in handy that day because the home invader could not see my dog with his flashlight. The fau covering his face keeps the light from reflecting from their eyes and becoming easy targets at night. Like every dog with a specific haircut, it has a purpose. I will never be without a Russian Terrier. Yeah, he is ALOT of grooming, and his professional grooming are $250. This breed, more than any I have had, is truly all purpose. He is a guardian, a goofball, a cuddler, a tremendous farm dog that herds everything from cattle to chickens, to even myself when it's dinner time. Great dogs, and they definitely require a truly exceptional owner/handler/family.

I think he senses your distrust of some people. Not a criticism - I say that as a BRT owner as well. I let my dog approach anyone he wants, and apologize for him being so friendly if I need to. If I hold him back he seems to think maybe he needs to be on guard. Just a thought, and really not a criticism. Oh, and yes - they disappear in the dark. Definitely handy for a guard dog. Glad you guys are ok.

For Canada and Canadian climate this breed should be good, but again, it’s a family dog. Google translate works very well for me, but I know both languages and can correct translation, just in case.

I had a BRT for 14 years back home in Ukraine. What a great dog he was! The chillest, nicest friend that loved people and had a sense of humor, but could stand his ground. It took me taking him to a junior protection training class to actually see if he was able to bite. Turned out he had the instincts all right, but he just hated biting. Not a mean bone in him. Also, luckily our Ram was the one puppy in his litter that did not have the modern "show" coat, his hair was rougher and shorter all over, so grooming was so much easier. It's been 5 years now miss him to this day.

Oh wow! Seeing this makes me both sad and happy. We used to have black russian terrier. I said used to bc unfortunately someone poisoned him and his kidneys failed. We had to make the best decision we could for him. I will never forget how gentle, intelligent and amazing he was. We have few miniature ponies in the neighbourhood and he loved looking at them. He was also amazing at sensing your emotions. Once I was out late and when I came back he gently (as much this beast could) patted me. I remember sitting on ground with him laying on my legs and looking at the moon. He made this night so much better. It truly is my core memory

I would love a Bouve one day, but they have a lot of health problems sadly, so I was told look into one of these since they can be very similar in look and in temperament. he looks pretty good, yeah not exactly a show cut but he isnt a show dog anymore, he can look how ever the owner wants, and this is easier to take care of

need to go to a dog show to understand what is acceptable. What you think is mean it really not. It's a standard for different types of dogs. You don't know anything about show dog standards. The dogs you see at show are not mixed dogs they purebred

@daniellewoolley8607 ... Oh stop with the elitist "show standards" talk. It's just human stupidity, cutting dog's hair to obstruct their vision to the point that they trip, as Vanessa said. It's human vanity, nothing more. Same with cutting dog's ears or tails just for a certain "look" that humans want for their own VANITY. I cannot take you seriously with your demand that "show standards" regarding esthetic features that literally injure dogs or negatively impact their ability to function are in any way legitimate.

I miss my Black Russian terrier, they are not for a first time dog owner, but are such great dogs. Thanks for putting this video up. yes there are several ways to groom them there’s a whole book on the various styles since they’re a newer breed not so many groomers come across them. We used to tie the hair in front with a hair band.

He is from slow growing line in a breed, they will be massive at 5 years old and he is only 2 years . Massive males grow slower as they need time wot fill up . He is our son , my male (father of Monty) became massive at 4.5 year old and he has excellent medical test - excellent hips. At his age he is very active and powerful (he is almost 8 now) he can run and jump better than young ones just because he was growing slow step by step and absorbed nutrients accordingly ❤️

I love these dogs, they're gentle giants and very intelligent. Always a pleasure to play with them, but it requires quite the strength 😅, I call them black sheeps. And if you need to know if they can see, they can, actually they should have hair around their eyes- they are very sensitive to sunlight, it doesnt hurt them in any way. It's the best haircut for them, trust me I had 3❤
