@DIARRHEA-PANIC Ummmm...what?? It's perfectly fine to have short hair on dogs. Yorkie's typically only have long hair if they're showdogs. My sister had a yorkie whose parents were showdogs, but he wasn't. The shorter hair is easier to take care of since yorkie's like to roll around in dirt and leaves.

@DIARRHEA-PANIC Dogs dont think like that. Some dogs also have one very short coat (for example a boxer, a minpin) where the fur is less than an inch long and provides no protection whatsoever. Some of those types of dogs still will react badly if you bathe or groom them. Dogs dont react badly cuz they are getting their fur trimmed. They are reacting because they are in a strange situation they dont understand with a strange human touching various parts of their body they might not be used to having handled and loud devices like clippers and dryers making lots of noise and odd sensations for them.

Coming from Yorkshire, I'm pleased to see one of our county terriers in your grooming parlour. Courage was pretty good (for a Yorkie!). They have an in-built programme which means they go through life convinced that everyone else is dead scared of them. My cousin had a Yorkie ("Whiskey") which saw a GSD on my cousin's caravan park & thought "I'm having a piece of that". Whiskey shot across the land & fastened his teeth onto the GSD's throat & wouldn't let go. The GSD just looked at his owner as much as to say "What is it? Please get it off me..." Incidentally, we in Yorkshire have the smallest terrier (Yorkie) and the largest (the Airedale) to represent us. Love the videos Vanessa, you are so patient and caring with all your clients.

He was a pretty good boy, though. Wasn’t the brightest dog in the world, but he had a lot of personality and was kind of a freak of nature. If yorkies were human, he’d have been Andre the Giant. It seems like a lot of Courage’s aggression is rooted in fear & anxiety, which makes total sense since he’s a rescued stray whose life prior to not just being adopted but being taken to the shelter appears unclear. He may have been largely uncooperative during his groom, but I think this is an important first step. He doesn’t have to view this as a positive or negative experience, but it will at least help him in hopefully understanding that he isn’t in any danger & is in safe hands. He was good for his bath, loved the blow dryer, especially in winter, and held still pretty well when I did his face. Home haircut, haha. But he screamed bloody murder when I clipped his nails. He never growled at me, or bit, just licked my hands. Luckily his nails wore down like Courage's since we walked and hiked miles together. He would bound through huge snowdrifts like a deer. He passed at 16 with respiratory arrest. I rescued a Cairn Terrier Chi cross now. Someone must have given Courage a haircut on his body at some point. Yorkie hair never stops growing, just like human hair, so he would've been much longer. They shed very little with no undercoat, but give them jackets in winter. 😊

@tegueggu Жыл бұрын
They typically feel the need to defend themselves because of their size. Knowing something could seriously hurt you or kill you will typically have you on edge. A lot of the time that leads to reactivity with dogs and sometimes even fear aggression. You also need to remember that most terriers are small and bred to be yappy, feisty killers. When a terrier like the yorkie “acts up”, people say they’re terrible rat dogs. Most of the time the dog is doing what its breed has been bred to do. That’s not to say that there aren’t nuisance dogs but training isn’t seen as important for little dogs.

Both had come from elderly ladies who treated them as babies. The last one died 1 month before his 18th birthday. My first one was 14 when she died and had been diagnosed with a heart mummer when I got her at 5 years. She turned out to be a fantastic dog, once she was allowed to behave like any normal sized dog. I have a soft spot for Yorkies, so I really enjoyed seeing Courage today. ❤ They're known to easily develop weak trachea issues, so I get a bit concerned about the impact to their trachea if they happen to pull a lot during grooming, like Courage does. But I'm not sure if you have a belly band/something else small enough to help to counteract all of that pulling! 😂 Thank you so much for working with him and for helping him get used to the grooming process!! 🤗 I think if he continues to work with patient groomers like you, he will keep improving. Thank you again. ❤

This isn't her first video. Or first year. She has been a long seasoned very VERY caring compassionate professional. Probably should check more of her videos out before the "I dont know if you have X Y or Z" - she has her own brand.

@@AmyC28713 Yes I know, I've been watching her videos for years. 🙂 I was careful to word my sentences in a way that did not insult her professionalism at all. I watch her for a reason - she is one of the best groomers on YT that I have ever seen, and she thoughtfully educates the public about different dog breeds. If you'll read my comments again, I think you'll find that I was recognizing and musing over the fact that there may be nothing she can do in order to protect the dog from pulling during the grooming process. I have personal experience working with Yorkies, and this is a known health issue with them. And in my opinion, all of us are allowed to point out potential issues in order to try to come up with solutions for any dogs who may need special consideration. I'm sorry, but you have completely misunderstood and misread my comments. And honestly, it would have been nice if you would have verified with me what I meant before choosing to judge me so harshly and incorrectly.

@@Jen7867I saw no harm in your comment, just voicing your concerns. Nothing wrong with that. But she was holding courage a lot throughout to stop her pulling so I think she’s aware of your concerns. Don’t worry for speaking up though, some people are just very defensive.

she does have a belly band, But I don't know if it would be small enough for a dog that small.

No, he is a biewer york. It's like some kind of different type of a breed.

@@johndou3940 the only physical difference between a biewer yorkie is and a normal Yorkie is that biewers are tri-color and not docked. He looks mixed, but almost definitely isn't a biewer.

Dogs have grooming fear because their humans don’t have them groomed enough as puppies. I have a biweekly appointment with my groomer. We never get too dirty or too long and my dogs are happy to see my groomer and get pampered. Humans need to do better.
