@DIARRHEA-PANIC Ummmm...what?? It's perfectly fine to have short hair on dogs. Yorkie's typically only have long hair if they're showdogs. My sister had a yorkie whose parents were showdogs, but he wasn't. The shorter hair is easier to take care of since yorkie's like to roll around in dirt and leaves.

@DIARRHEA-PANIC Dogs dont think like that. Some dogs also have one very short coat (for example a boxer, a minpin) where the fur is less than an inch long and provides no protection whatsoever. Some of those types of dogs still will react badly if you bathe or groom them. Dogs dont react badly cuz they are getting their fur trimmed. They are reacting because they are in a strange situation they dont understand with a strange human touching various parts of their body they might not be used to having handled and loud devices like clippers and dryers making lots of noise and odd sensations for them.

Yeah, we had one kinda like that too. He didn’t really mind the bath and actually enjoyed the blow dryer, but he absolutely hated his claws being clipped. Only time he ever bit anyone in earnest was when I was holding him while the groomer did his paws and he was mouthing my hand in anxiety, then crunched down pretty deep on the heel of my thumb. He was a pretty good boy, though. Wasn’t the brightest dog in the world, but he had a lot of personality and was kind of a freak of nature. If yorkies were human, he’d have been Andre the Giant. Weird for a pedigree pure blood yorkie. The rest of his litter and parents were all around 7-8 pounds, but he topped the scales around 15 without an ounce of fat on him. XD

It seems like a lot of Courage’s aggression is rooted in fear & anxiety, which makes total sense since he’s a rescued stray whose life prior to not just being adopted but being taken to the shelter appears unclear. He may have been largely uncooperative during his groom, but I think this is an important first step. He doesn’t have to view this as a positive or negative experience, but it will at least help him in hopefully understanding that he isn’t in any danger & is in safe hands. Personally, I think that, despite his aggression, he did great for his first groom with Vanessa! I truly wish Courage the best moving forward 💖

I've had 2 yorkers over the years. Neither of them had little dog yaps. Strangers at the door thought I had a bigger dogs. Both had been rescued when they were 5. Both had come from elderly ladies who treated them as babies. The last one died 1 month before his 18th birthday. My first one was 14 when she died and had been diagnosed with a heart mummer when I got her at 5 years. She turned out to be a fantastic dog, once she was allowed to behave like any normal sized dog. Generally the boy became a decent dog, but still with some behaviour problems.

"Inherited" her from my mom's gentleman friend. He and his son were just to busy to keep up with her grooming and when she came to me her coat was a horror. Once she was groomed professionally (the groomer was able to safe enough of her coat to give her a short "puppy" cut) it grew out into a glorious flowing coat. Daily brushing and combing is all it took to keep it neat. She loved her baths and would prance around like a little fashion model showing off how pretty we told she was. Never liked Yorkie's until I had her.

They typically feel the need to defend themselves because of their size. Knowing something could seriously hurt you or kill you will typically have you on edge. A lot of the time that leads to reactivity with dogs and sometimes even fear aggression. You also need to remember that most terriers are small and bred to be yappy, feisty killers. When a terrier like the yorkie “acts up”, people say they’re terrible rat dogs. Most of the time the dog is doing what its breed has been bred to do. That’s not to say that there aren’t nuisance dogs but training isn’t seen as important for little dogs.

Coming from Yorkshire, I'm pleased to see one of our county terriers in your grooming parlour. Courage was pretty good (for a Yorkie!). They have an in-built programme which means they go through life convinced that everyone else is dead scared of them. My cousin had a Yorkie ("Whiskey") which saw a GSD on my cousin's caravan park & thought "I'm having a piece of that". Whiskey shot across the land & fastened his teeth onto the GSD's throat & wouldn't let go. The GSD just looked at his owner as much as to say "What is it? Please get it off me..." Incidentally, we in Yorkshire have the smallest terrier (Yorkie) and the largest (the Airedale) to represent us. Love the videos Vanessa, you are so patient and caring with all your clients.

"Yor-riers" rule! Mine was a rescue as well, quite rare. He was found on the street but no one came to the shelter. He was good for his bath, loved the blow dryer, especially in winter, and held still pretty well when I did his face. Home haircut, haha. But he screamed bloody murder when I clipped his nails. He never growled at me, or bit, just licked my hands. Luckily his nails wore down like Courage's since we walked and hiked miles together. He would bound through huge snowdrifts like a deer. He passed at 16 with respiratory arrest. I rescued a Cairn Terrier Chi cross now. Someone must have given Courage a haircut on his body at some point. Yorkie hair never stops growing, just like human hair, so he would've been much longer. They shed very little with no undercoat, but give them jackets in winter. 😊

Courage does the quickest tapdancing I've ever seen! 😂 He's an amazing boi to have lived through what he has. Someone in Jamaica cared enough about him to shelter him and do their best, and I'm glad he has a forever home now. ❤ I hope no one misunderstands his fearfulness for aggressiveness. 🫂 For Vanessa for putting out this video for his future groomers.

My yorkie chihuahua mix (rescue dog) is just like Courage for his bath. He hates nail trims but absolutely melts with the clippers. I "groom" him myself ...We are getting better every time.

Courage probably perfected his scary growl on the streets of Jamaica...especially since he is little. Bless him.

Omg Courage just looks like my silky terrier that I adopt from shelter 8 years ago!! He is fine with 90% of grooming but he HATES his face blow dried!! During covid we learned how to groom his hair. We groom him ourselves now :D

Courage is so cute even if his tippy happy feet were more for anxiety I imagine when he gets excited those feet start tippy tapping too. he did so well but truly that growl of his is a little scary even for a yorkie 😂 hopefully in the future he finds grooming less scary

Why anyone would want that beautiful silky hair cut on a Yorkie I just don't get. He's a beautiful tiny package of courage indeed & I'm happy Vanessa took him for a compassionate grooming after seeing his reaction to an obvious painful attempt to clip his feet & nails that caused him fear & trauma & all THAT after having been a street dog in Jamaica for God's sake to a shelter dog & finally to a Canadian home! What resilience this little spitfire has! Bless his tiny lion heart! Let his bum be covered in that beautiful silky hair again! 👑

My step grandfathers brother an his wife had a Yorkshire Terrier named Toby, he was always scared and timid, when they both passed away from a year of each other, toby was brought to my step grandfathers house to stay at. He chosen me as his new person. He would sit, lay on, follow and even tried protecting me when someone would playfully punch me, he would bark at them to stop. He was so sweet when he came out of his shell, but he had a problem with these things that sounded like reverse sneezes. One day it happened again and a worse thing happened, he couldn't walk, eat, drink or even lay down. But hes in a better place now but i dearly miss him. He chosen me as his new owner and i couldn't protect him from something that took him away.
