I've noticed elderly folks tend to be really good at training up a dog, though can be often borderline negligent in the care. Being retired allows for extended time for bonding and training, but the humans aren't always aware of how much their energy, memory, and physical ability has declined. I'm just glad Doodle's owner made the hard, but right decision to send her to a home that can give her the care she needs.

"she doesn't bark". Mark my words, she'll find her voice once she feels comfortable in her forever home. The rescue we got one of our dogs from said she didn't make a peep, and was a very quiet dog. She made a little "woof" after about 4 to 5 months , and then shortly after came the hypersonic Sonic boom happy barks!

My Pebbles came to me with some pretty big issues from previous home/s. I've never seen a dog so INCREDIBLY timid & afraid... like even soft music on the radio sent her cowering & shaking. Worse still, if I walked by with an object in my hand, she immediately cowered, as if she was waiting to be hit. 😭 She wouldn't make a sound until after about two months, we heard a tiny, little bark. She was stuck in the bathroom. 😊 Besides that, she barked once when a dog approached me - she was my 6 lb guardian 😂 She still only barks when she's stuck in a room, but over the 3 yrs we've had her, she has learned to relax & trust. She still has a little noise sensitivity but it's easily managed now. The fear of being hit seems entirely gone - I think she realizes that she will never, ever have to worry about that again. Dogs are proof that God loves us more than we deserve.

We adopted our chihuahua from my sister-in-law's relative. That person thought she was getting a teacup chihuahua because she chose the smallest puppy. Instead, she ended up becoming one of the tallest chihuahuas I've ever seen in my life. The previous owner kept her in a cage most of the time and didn't feed her much because she was trying to keep the dog small. But, when she realized it wasn't going to be a teacup chihuahua, she decided to give it away for free. My mom went over to that woman's house, met the chihuahua, and brought her home that same day. The chihuahua was super shy and went many weeks without barking. Then, when she realized we weren't going to treat her like garbage like her last home, she started showing off her real personality. Which includes being a very vocal chihuahua who woke my family up at 3 am one morning because a raccoon broke into the chicken coop and she heard the noise with her super powerful hearing.

And then there's my beautiful Lakeland Terrier. Terriers are known to be big barkers and rambunctious, but she was so quiet and chill! She was just over a year old when she barked for the first time! We were out in the backyard and she startled all of us and scared the bejesus out of herself! She very seldom used that voice - not even when someone came to the door. She adored visiiirs and we always joked that she'd give any burglar a guided tour - "This is where they keep the silver, the big TV is in here..." 😂😂 She was lively (but not crazy) and enjoyed games and puzzles and one of her favorite outdoor games was soccer. She had commandeered one of my daughter's playground balls with a huge picture of Mickey Mouse and she loved to play. She'd run and kick it along in front of her, like any good soccer player. But if she felt you might be able to get it, she'd just step over it and tuck it under her tummy so she was standing over it. She knew we would never attempt to kick the ball or otherwise get it, so she'd tuck it and then stand there, so proud of herself! But she never barked even during the excitement of the game. She would bark when boarded and would sometimes come home with hoarseness. But at home, she only barked when she was calling or greeting her squirrel friend. Every day, at 4pm on the dot, they met by the mulberry tree and whoever got there first called to the other. They'd spend about a half hour playing and then they'd part ways. I grieved along with my baby when suddenly the squirrel stopped coming. She continued to look for the squirrel every time she went out for years. 😢 I still miss her - she lived to 18 and she lived with us all of her life. She's been gone 19 years and I think of her (and all my dog babies) every day. Anyway, it's entirely possible that this dog could be the same. Simply a non-barker.

I also thought that due to lack of adequate nutrition before being rescued that she likely doesn’t have a lot of energy yet, though she did look very happy when playing outside. I have a bonded pair of double rescue cats who were rescued as kittens, adopted at some stage, their owner passed unexpectedly, and they were returned to the rescue for a number of months. We’ve had them for a just over a year and I’d say we are only now seeing them fully relax and reveal all aspects of their personalities. One is more mischievous now, the other more chilled out, and both are totally adored love bugs. ❤️

A good reason to be careful about the breeder. You really should be able to meet the dam and any remaining puppies because hopefully the breeder has them in a comfortable spacious area, whether inside the home or some insulated outer building. And if the sire isn’t there at least have some information about him. I wouldn’t trust someone if I couldn’t see that the parents are as claimed and that they are well cared for (or I can’t get a reliable recommendation from a trusted source if the breeder is distant.)

Ooof! That is a lot of emotional assault coming at you all at once. Making that decision is the hardest I’ve ever had to do but it is quality over quantity. Hope for a quick mend for your husband and maybe a fluffy covered heart, if you feel ready. We weren’t sure if we wanted to wait, get another after, or leave off entirely, as our 18 yr old toy mix is beginning to decline significantly, and we have never had the freedom of not working around a pack members needs before. Husband found a very happy guy dumped near his work about a week after we started talking about it. Brought him to the shelter to look for owners because he was in good shape but no one claimed him. We didn’t want to leave him there and have him lose his super sweet personality so JD joined our pack. He’s actually helped our grumpy old man enjoy more of his life, we are more active and he’s loving life, so I guess the universe knew better.

I wish everyone screaming about bad owners would take a step back. From Doodle's behavior thru the video, she probably wasn't actively harmed, but she was absolutely not cared for well enough to maintain a minimum standard of health. Her calmness and overall tolerance for contact tells me the owner was simply too old/frail/senile to keep up with her. The owner may very well have been on a budget or simply unable to buy enough food for both of them. But yeah, the breeder was absolutely at fault.

I agree. Sometimes owners have the best of intentions. It’s a good sign that the owner realized they couldn’t take care of her properly and surrendered her. So many people think it’s bad to give up a pet, but in many cases it’s the best thing for the pet, and often the owner is heartbroken but does it for their pet’s best interests.

I see a lot of hate and negativity towards the elderly lady. She should not be blamed. You don't know her story. The elderly population is increasingly becoming more financially unstable as they live longer. I know she's in Canada, but I can assume, just like in the US, elderly support wasn't planned for people living as long as they are. She likely wanted a small dog for a multitude of reasons. Small dogs are generally a lot less expensive than larger dogs, are better suited for small apartments, and typically don't demand a very active lifestyle. Small dogs food needs are less, their grooming is less expensive, and their vet bills are usually less. The lady was probably embarrassed and ashamed so didn't reach out for help sooner. She obviously loved this dog, she doesn't show signs of physical abuse, doesn't have any ailments or mange, and is very well mannered. This beautiful pup is now on her way to recovery and to another loving home more well suited for her. Thank you Vanessa for being unbiased when it comes to animals in this situation. About ten years ago, I was in a very bad financial situation, waiting for my government to realize i wasn't trying to scam back the money I had paid into social security, barely able to keep myself fed. My cat, who had been with me before i became disabled, was doing okay thanks to a local emergency food program for pets, but I could only be on it for a limited time (emergency, ya know). I tried rehoming her and there were no takers. It costs money to relinquish to a no kill shelter around here--money i didn't have. I was in agony, sharing my food with her and thinking how I couldn't just give her to animal control. Thankfully, i finally got a just verdict in my lawsuit against the government. I don't like to think about the alternative. PS my vet was letting me pay as I could for Mimi's care.

I have a feeling that once she's secure in her forever home, Doodles will really come out of her shell. Seeing this baby finally get clean for the first time in perhaps ever really squeezed at my heart and hit close to home. One of our poodles is from an unethical breeder who used him as the poodle half to create doodles. He came home having lived in a kennel for all his seven years and scared stiff. He didn't know how to walk on a leash, up and down stairs, he wasn't house trained, etc. He was covered up to his knees and beyond in a layer of his own poo; it was aweful! My dad gave him a bath and he was just so still and silent because he didn't know what to do with himself. It made me want to cry seeing Doodles somewhat similar, being scared to the point of peeing, but such a good, sweet girl! I so loved seeing her run free in the yard, so carefree. Our boy has come so far in five years, and he was well grown. Doodles is still a puppy, really. I'm so glad she has a second chance so young! Sending Doodles my love and hope for a brighter, better future!

She so happy running around your yard. Brought me to tears😢. We just got a new addition to our family through the cat distribution center. But I have no respect for the previous owner. They told my daughter that they didn't want the cat anymore because they'd had animals for 50 years. And now they just didn't want them any more. This is a 9 month old kitten. Why did you get it? Luckily, we have enough room to take care of another baby. So little Lucy is now a part of our family. Her name was kittens. I don't understand people that don't look at animals like family members. It's not something I can comprehend.

I hear you there. I got my most recent cat through the cat distribution center. He was thrown from a moving car near my house. When I found him he has a broken tail with an abscess in the break fleas and ticks everywhere. Ear infection with not only ear mites but bacterial and yeast as well. And from the being through from the car it broke his jaw bad and destroyed his paw pads and nails. I took him into the vet and said I would adopt him now if that means getting him help. Lots of money later I have a very healthy almost 1 year old. He was approximately 5 months when they dumped him. But a lot of my family say it was a sign as I had to put my 6 year old Amstaff down the next day do to heart failure. But I love my Mr. Kitty. He is just like a dog in a cats body.

This dog was constantly howling, crying, and I just thought he was really miserable being stuck in that apartment all day. I just never understand why some people get pets when they don't do their research and they have no idea how to take care of them. If you're not going to put in the effort to take care of a pet, then please don't get one. They deserve way better.

Just rescued a medium big guy (55 lbs) who we found near my husband’s work. We think it was a dump because he is in near perfect body condition. We are active and make sure he gets one really long walk in the morning when it’s cooler and then multiple sniffs and play/train sessions through the day. He is picking up skills faster than I can teach them but had none of them when we met a month ago so all I can think is someone knew someone with unexpected puppies (he is unique looking) and they didn’t want them going to the shelter but couldn’t really give him what he needs.

I tend to agree about the name; she definitely needs something that showcases her beautiful spirit more, rather than being a riff on her mixed heritage. There's only one dog I can remember getting that we actually kept her name, other than puppeaes who had no names of course, because it just fit her so well. Everyone else got new names. Our very first poodle, toy size, was called "snowball" by his neglectful/abusive apartment-living owners. It took one evening for him to be renamed "Tuffy". A cutesy name, yes, but fit his personality perfectly. Our first standard poodle we got from a lady at 7 months old who'd bought him from a breeder and didn't want him anymore was called "Lestat" by her. Ugh... yep, that had to go! Now, and for the last nearly 9 years, he has been "Maximus". There are others, but those were the two worst original names. Fortunately, neither really knew them so it was easy to train their new names.

True if it was deliberate. But I have worked as a dog trainer with a lot of pet owners who don't have a great understanding of how to judge their dog's weight, how to assess their body condition or how to properly increase food for a puppy's growth needs without some education. I think many people look at the dog to assess weight, but with a big matted coat it would appear to weigh more than she really did. So it's also possible it was a bad situation for pup and owner alike and just be thankful she is in foster and off to a better place.

My grandmother did this back in the 90s as well. She got it in her head that she wanted a sheltie like she had when she was a little girl and bought a puppy from a breeder. The sheltie grew up to be on of those big boned shelties (beautiful) and was way too much for my grandmother. Even though she loved the dog (and he loved her), she could not give him the exercise he needed. When my grandmother died, my mother went back and flew Chauncey from Pittsburgh to San Diego and he lived a really good life (new fence for a multi-level huge back yard and daily walks) with my parents and siblings for the significant number of years he had left.

Absolutely! There's just something so incredibly intelligent and also empathetic about poodles, and I imagine that translates to mixes as well. I have a silver poodle girl who came to our home at barely three years old. She was just coming off puppy food because the owner before last had bred her to make sheepadoodles or something. Anyway, the puppy food had started to upset her stomach, so little did I know she had a terrible diarrhea in the middle of the night. She came to paw me awake like she does when she needs to potty, so I took her right upstairs to the main floor and outside. I was so half-asleep that it was only on my way back down with her that I found her accident. It was as though she had come to say "I'm sorry, I had an accident, forgive me?" She makes these funny throat sounds, as if trying to form words, looks at me with her deep brown eyes, and my heart just melts. She's just turned five and yeah, she is my BABY! I hope Doodles finds her way to someone who loves her and she loves back, like my Layla girl found me. Doodles deserves the best the world can give her.

Animal Aid in Windsor, Ont, and have adopted and loved my doggie child, furbaby, what ever you want to call her. My ex and I adopted her when she was 5. Alotho, I seen her around Windsor, without knowing that was her, I seen her abused. I cannot tell you seeing a animal in need and abused, just rips out your soul and you wonder how ppl can be this cruel. All of my kids, all four of my 4-legged children, to my human daughter, the last 2 of my dogga children grew up with my 2-legged daughter. I cannot stress enough as a mother of babies, you have a heart of gold. You are an amazing human being. Do you know Linda Blair's World Heart Foundation of re-rehabilitating fur babies? She lives somewhere in Cali. Too bad both of you's couldn't group up. I think both of you's have so much to give together. She is another amazing human being. It's horrible that some breeders are just about thw money and not about a love of the breed and wanting good homes. But she is so sweet and beautiful. I hope her next family gives her all the love and care she deserves.

Maybe she was getting more care than we think? Being old does not mean you don’t care about your pet. I’m sure she was loved as her behavior shows this. But people can have financial problems from a set income. Also older people have falls and accidents and surgeries and it gets to where caring for a loved animal is impossible. The fact she was shaved with sizzors tells us her owner tried to care for her.

She was taken into a shelter, then a foster home. Her nails were trimmed there at the very least. While I’m sure the old lady tried her best, it is clear she did not groom Doodle

Fostering is the hardest but most rewarding feeling at the same time. I started to foster after my first baby passed after 19 years. I couldn't handle the eventual death of a pet. Now I foster and as hard as it is to say goodbye, it's paired with the joy of seeing them so happy in a home thats perfect for them. I get a few updates from the forever homes to make sure they are indeed happy and then I just pretend they are immortal, forever living their best life. ❤

“Pretend they are immortal”. Yes, please! My husband and I were going back and forth as our 18 year old toy mix is in decline. Do we get one now, after, foster or just leave it empty for now? He found a very happy guy wandering around his work about a week after our last conversation. One year old, potty trained, and super trainable. We brought him to the shelter first because we aren’t thieves (he’s in good condition) and he needed to be neutered. A week later, he was ours. He will likely be our last but he has actually helped our senior out a little more pep in his step and I have so much fun training him so I think maybe it was just meant to be.

So glad you're helping her! When I rescued my dog, she was just as malnourished as this dog and suffering with worms. The first time I bathed her, she had an AWFUL smell in her coat that wouldn't go away until I figured out how to give her a deep grooming. I came to find out that before I got her, she was living in the backyard of an illegal drug house 😟 And before that, she was on the streets in a bad part of town. All that in her first 4 months of life It's a miracle she survived. Regardless of the health trials she had to overcome, i'm so grateful that she showed up on my front lawn looking for food and chose to stay for a family. It took months for her to show her personality and affection, but she gave me her trust. Although I wasn't ready to have her before, I would do anything for her now. She's my sweet baby. ❤️

I think also (not making excuses, just pointing this out) most people seem to have never seen a standard poodle and don't realize that they come in something besides toy and miniature.

I wonder if that might be part of why she was underfed; an older person going off broad guidelines on 'how much to feed a small dog.' Because she's so polite, I feel like her former owner was probably kind to her, but didn't understand how to take care of this specific dog.

@@Eloraurora This was my thinking, and I'm not entirely unconvinced that her previous owner didn't have some sort of condition that would affect her judgement or overall cognitive abilities. Not to mention that she was already not going to be able to lift or walk Doodles. And the thought of rehoming her probably never crossed her mind because many elderly forget things like their medicines or appointments. A responsible caregiver could have either advised against Doodles's purchase altogether, helped with rehoming her, or had helped with her care.

Ok, so the dog wasn't what the elderly owner expected but..there's no excuse to neglect the dog till you rehome Doodles..no food, not groomed. Seriously shame on you. Begs the question how would you treat the " right" sized dog.
@hennaoctopus

Agreed, the dog would still need to be brushed and have nails trimmed no matter the size. don't think that lady should have any dog, even if the breeder takes a lot of the blame

With the merle pattern and the tan feet I would agree with everyone who said she is an Aussie-doodle....that merle pattern comes from the aussie...she could be an Aussie-doodle crossed with a labradoodle...She has a very poodle body....but her face is aussie looking in the jaw area. She's a sweet and rather calm dog for being so young.

I think the elderly past owner actually tried her best with Doodle, as she's so well behaved and is crate trained. It was just really unfortunate/bad backyard breeding the previous owner got sold a dog in bad faith and wasn't able to look after a big energetic dog.

Might not have realized, given that they were thinking they were feeding for a small dog with a fluffy coat, just how under weight Doodles was getting. Maybe did their best with limited finances, maybe lots of reasons...but the important thing is that they let her go to find a home where she can thrive.

The fact that the original owner didn't trim the dog's nails, to the point that the nails *grew into the paw pads*, I don't think she was "trying her best" at all. That's pure neglect and evil.

@@cosmicrae if she couldn't bother taking the dog to the groomer even once, she shouldn't have gotten a dog at all. It's called being responsible and well informed, something she should know about in her advanced age. Having a pet is a luxury and privilege, not a right.

15:11 Your discussion about doodles reminded me of my family's late golden doodle, Jarvis. He was the absolute best dog, but only because my parents worked their butts off and paid good money to socialize him and train him. Jarv was SO smart and so loving and he wanted to be everyone's best friend forever. But it's exactly like you said: he was SUPER high energy. That meant he was a bit anxious, too, poor fella. But that just meant he fit in REALLY well with my whole family, lol. I miss that sweet boy. I hope there lots of dogs he can play with in heaven.
