Two of my and music's most inspirational artists, celebrating the man, Django Reinhardt, who inspired us all. Julian Bream was a one of a kind. He began his guitar studies on a diet of Django's music as a child. This is a magnificent treat to hear them together, joined by Django's musical soul. We miss them all. Thank you for your art and inspiration. I'm certain, they're still doing it in heaven.

I am reading Julian's autobiography at the moment , Life on the road. I came here because Julian was mentioning how cross he was because he was supposed to play 7 mins of tunes ( Bach Prelude and Asturias) but Stephane ignored that and threw Julian into the den of lions so to speak with this and another tune with a larger band. Julian also mentioned he was very unhappy with the end because Stephane just went off on one! I think it was astonishing but Julian was not a happy bunny!!! I am sure all is forgiven though because 19 years later when Julian was on " This is your life" Stephane recorded a wonderful tribute to Julian which was played on the show. Julian was thrilled to bits. Later that year Stephane died so I don't know if they ever met up again.....

OMG!!!!!! Wow my favorite living guitarist and the late Stephan Grapelli. I love the way Bream does some of the open voicings using open strings with harmonics and putting the high note on the lower string. I started in Flamenco and then played both Classical and Flamenco till I went to study Jazz with the late great great Jimmy Wyble. He was to guitarists what Gandalf is to wizards. So I really appreciate the use of Classical guitar and Jazz guitar blending. Remember Bream played Jazz before he played Classical guitar. I did it the other way around. .
@richardbenitez78035 жыл бұрын
I remember Julian bream and John Williams were guys that turned me off to classical guitar, the style. They were always so stuffy, elite. I hated it. Classical guitar and flamenco were instruments and tunes of the common man. I did not like Bream and Williams bringing classical to a snob appeal. Plus, they’re playing was too sedate, refined. In SF i often had season tickets to Intimate venues with classical guitar series with young guitarists and established. For me, they completely broke down this Williams and Bream outline.

A quote Taken from Julian Breams Book "A life on the road" "The Albert Hall was packed, and the TV lights were phenomenal, but I got trough Nuages pretty well. Until the end, that is, where we had agreed that he plays a cadenza for twenty seconds or so, and then I had to come in for the last beat. So there I was, poised, watching, and he just went on and on and on. I thought, well, Jesus it was like a concierto he was playing.- the Bach Fiddle Chaconne, or something. There were double stops, treble stops chromatic and diminishes arpeggios all over the instrument. He was frozing about in all sorts of outlandish keys. At one point I didn´t think he was ever going to make it back to G Major. By this point the cadenza had been running I swear, for every second of three minutes. This was the biggest self-applied ego massage I´ve ever witnessed in public, and when the rapsodic neurosis finally came to a grinding halt I was emberassed out of my mind.. I just hit a loud chord of G Major and collapsed in a heap"

Bream one of the few modern classical arts performers that can and will improv. It's sad, I had heard Jack Bruce of Cream say the reason for it a few yrs. ago, it's the piss poor way that the universities are teaching music. all people should improvise, they all used to do it whenever they played! I still can't do it well at all after 2 yrs. in school and 20 some yrs of playing, and it pisses me off! lol

I didn't know that they even knew each other, let alone that they had played together... What a find. Grappelli is the ne plus ultra of jazz fiddle players. Although I've been familiar with Bream for several decades, it's only my fairly recent discoveries of him jamming with Ali Akbar Khan in the early '60's, playing John Dowland lute songs (on the lute), and this performance, that makes me think that he may be the most "soulful" classical guitarist of all time. Addendum: Watch Grappelli's face during Bream's solo, and Bream's during Grapelli's cadenza: There is serious mutual admiration going on here.

Nice. There's a video somewhere of the Julian Bream Consort, c.1962, backstage and Bream plays a Django number on the gypsy-jazz model guitar (don't know its name off hand) with some style. I think Bream was actually an electric guitarist entertaining British troops during WW2 before he focused on being a classical player. He's retired now and from the "my life in music" dvd it appears he lives alone on an estate with his dog called Django. One other thought: to these ears, Grappelli always sounded best with acoustic guitar rather than with a regular jazz band with bass/drums or even electric jazz guitar (e.g. Martin Taylor). If he didn't stay in London when WW2 broke out, the original quintet w/Django might have continued or perhaps its run was over.
