A fascinating interview but, as a retired atmospheric scientist I cannot concur with Chu’s optimism regarding technological fixes for climate change. At +1.2 Celsius, climate impacts already pose an existential threat to ecosystems on land and in the sea, hence also to our food and water supplies. Furthermore, the cumulative environmental and socioeconomic impacts of every additional tenth of a degree will be markedly non-linear. We simply do not have the leeway to wait several decades for billion tonne scale, renewable energy powered CDR, and as our global food and water supplies falter it would be naive to assume the continued stability of the socioeconomic systems capable of delivering coordinated mitigating interventions.

The worst possible future revolves around even the possibility of basically all algae dying as the ocean ph goes enough below ph 8. And how some theories sugguest things could happen based on that. The big issue with ocean PH is that things are happening really fast. In another time, weathering of rocks could actually counteract the ph issue. Worst case scenario, as in absolute worst case, the ocean goes back to emitting hydrogen sulfide after the algae dies and the surface goes anoxic and.... yeah, bad days if the ocean turns toxic and emits gasses that are especially bad for, say, mammals.

I appreciate the podcast, especially for featuring a Nobel laureate interview. It's rare for influencers to do so. This interview can be eye-opening for Indonesians, showcasing what a Nobel laureate is. President Obama's choice of Mr. Steven Chu as Secretary of Energy reflects the U.S.'s trust in science to solve problems. Lastly, I would like to introduce myself to Pak Gita and all members, I'm Ivan, currently living in New York City and studying Carbon Management. If you find yourself in NYC, let's grab coffee and chat.

Golden Rice. Is that a solution to vitamin A deficiency? Who holds that patent and when will they turn the screws? Why not yams, sweet potatoes, certain squashes? Why couldn't these be grown? Couldn't they be a more cost effective way to distribute the nutrition needed? They would also receive other needed nutrition at the same time. We had many millions put into the development of this privately owned genetically engineered product (as far as I know it hasn't been given for free in perpetuity)? During that development time, millions were malnourished. Too bad those millions couldn't have been spent on the seeds, tubers or starts of other crops that ALREADY have the beta carotene in abundance? Where us this discussion? Was that project an appropriate use of funds or scarce resources? Is it really an effective solution? Is it just another way to enslave the people to the multinational corporations?

Listening to Steven Chu, you would never know that he was Minister of Energy under an administration that literally doubled natural gas and petroleum extraction in the US, because they chose to not crack down on pollution from fracking. They also chose to allow mountain top removal for coal to continue. They chose to not use the power that congress gave them to investigate the environmental problems with fracking. When Chu was serving, Obama came out with his "all of the above" energy policy during his first term that encouraged more fracking. Chu should have used the independence that Obama gave him to recommend that the Clean Power Plan and the stream protection rule be implemented immediately, rather than waiting till the end of the second term, when Trump could easily cancel them. Chu should have told Obama, carbon capture and storage is hogwash, so don't fund it. Then his moralizing about what is he going to tell his grandchildren is total BS. When did Chu tell Obama that he can't take the politically expedient path when dealing with climate change. After the Deepwater Horizon incident, Chu should have been pushing Obama to ban all future deep water drilling permits and to not authorize a single new pipeline in the US and not authorize new hydrocarbon extraction on federal lands. Chu could have recommended many policies that didn't require approval from congress. Chu could have pushed for heavy fines for BP, but instead he talks about how he had a good working relationship with the company in solving the crisis. Maybe if the American oil/gas majors had been pushed during the Obama years, they would now be investing in solar, wind and charging stations like the European majors. This interviewer should have pushed Chu on all these issues, yet instead we got Chu moralizing about what the youth should tell their grandparents. Really disgusting to watch this interview, once you know what actually happened under Chu's watch.

All I see in your comment is Chu this and Chu that. If it's not Chu it's Obama. But if you looked beyond what appears to be your not-so-closeted hate of those guys, you would know that the US economy is not run by the government. It is merely managed. And alot of that management is merely paper pushing even at the level of POTUS. So to go against such an embedded part of the economy like the oil comps ( Koch etc ) who have as Chu says, put themselves in every product possible to keep their consumers dependent on the product, is inherently dangerous. Not ( just ) because of votes but because complaints against their business models are stifled by the legally bound leases previous governments have given to them. You need majority support in all the branches to attack the source of all our problems. But it wasn't Obama who invented the MTG's and Clarence Thomas's of the world. The 2025 Heritage Foundation is neither Chu or Obama's benefactor. But the one who says Drill baby Drill is key to their soiling of the layperson's future.

Ah... that's right... they know nothing of regenerative systems and can't conceive of lower consumption because that feels like failure to them when it would be correcting mistakes we made long ago. Why do so many scientists accept the concept of "energy demand" without question? Who, exactly, is "demanding" the energy? What is it being used for now? Do we "need" all of that exterior lighting? (Think about Las Vegas and large cities around the world.). Does every family "need" to have three or four cars to drive one person in each car? Do we "need" all of the stuff that the corporations are advertising? Is the corporate energy sector so powerful that they can claim an energy "demand" that will require us to poison the planet so that the corporate and energy captains can become even more ridiculously wealthy? Why do we "need" for those people to have 90 percent of our global wealth? Scientists who do NOT ask these questions are not working for the benefit of us or the Earth's ecosphere. We should get rid of the "energy bosses" (and the scientists who do their bidding) and establish a democracy that can actually serve the people and all of the life forms that all of us are absolutely dependent upon.

Because in Democratic Nations the arguments have to convince - and be supported by - the majority of "the people." In an authoritarian World "One World Government" - it might be possible to make sane and intelligent Command Economy decisions - it is likely though that we get whipsawed around by what the leading bully authoritarian in charge has had for dinner and whether he woke up on the wrong side of the bed... In a Democratic system - we have to prevail by the winning arguments of the times. Well - just look at American republican shit these days, Brexit Britain, Palestine, Russia/Ukraine and ask yourself - How likely is a consensus going to arise? Our best scientists can argue til they are blue in the face - and they have done so - endlessly for decades now - and the stupid and corrupt will simply ignore them and just carry on burying their heads in the sand - feathering their own nests - appointing self destructive idiots to be leaders - and vote for the biggest populists and the most simple minded hot button issues and not give a fig about what is intelligent, useful or helpful. Yes the corporate sector is powerful and has no responsibility to preserving and helping "The Commons." But it really is the stupid people who keep voting against their best interests and falling for all the dis-information being pushed staedily by the anti-science grifters and the Machiavellian populist misinformation merchants. It would be fantastic if people were as intelligent as we wish thhem to be - and pretend to be while constantly demonstrating otherwise - and if they would get educated about reality. I am not hopeful. I've seen 69 years worth of political and populist addiction to superstitions, magical thinking, toxic ideologies, and self harming choices at election time. It is hard to remain optimistic - even to hold a modest degree of meliorism. (Pessimism is really unhelpful - even as it is perfectly understandable when judging human behaviour over the past few decades.) There are green shoots of hopefulness now and again - but the DIMS amonst us quickly somp all over them and piss all over the folks trying to nurture them...

Meaning there are also other problems at the SAME level as Climate Change. I would say that water is one of them for example... Because Water is so wasted and polluted it would take drastic worldwide changes to start caring for it. And the infra structures to do it are also no joke... They are big, smelly and power hungry. Btw I was able to spare THOUSANDS of liters just by changing ONE daily habit. If you're pissing on a flush toilet... You're not sparing water. And look... People will start to complain if you demand that they start pissing on bidets or wall toilets, they call it Authoritarianism you know... Can't tell people what to do... So yeah, you said it correctly, "complex future". When you start to suggest people change their habits... Which most of this stuff is actually about... You're entering Dangerous Territory. Fluctuations... a nice way to describe "depopulation events." Which is what we as humans, will face in time. Insurance companies have stated that once we see 100,000 people die from a climate event, high risk and medium risk insurance will not be available. Medium risk from climate events, describes most of the places humans live now. That is in the near future. It is nice to be optimistic but it is important to be realistic. Understand that what is demanded of us, is far beyond our abilities. That is not to say don't try! Try hard and never stop. Our future, for the next couple hundred years, will be a battle at every turn. One might concern themselves with where they live. It might be a matter of survival. Everyone needs to take their situation very seriously, especially those in high risk areas. Good luck everyone 🍀

I don't know how old you are, but I'm 67. I was in my late teens when the started selling "unleaded gasoline". They sold it because the government told car manufacturers they had to manufacture car engines that would not require the LEAD that was ADDED to gasoline to prevent engines from making an annoying "ping" noise. They did that because scientist discovered there were MASSIVE lead contaminations GLOBALLY - on land and ocean floors. They discovered children had massive levels of lead in their bodies because of of this. You may not know it - but household paints for walls and wood trim had "LEAD" in the paint. Children were found to have lead poisoning. POINT IS - it was NOT the end of humanity - they just made the collective decision to STOP adding LEAD to paint and gasoline. I could tell you about the discovery in "ASBESTOS" that was used for insolation was found to cause cancer? My brother worked in a glass factory that used asbestos. He died of "Mesothelioma Lung Cancer" which is directly attributed to exposure to Asbestos. What about CIGARETES and Lung Cancer? RJR Tobacco executives "testified" to congress that smoking cigarettes COULD NOT CAUSE Lung Cancer. I could go on and on about that one and how it's still legal because industry makes too much money to let it go. How about cars that now have required seatbelts and windshields made with "Safety Glass"? There are many, many more. These are all things I LIVED THROUGH. So did the world come to an end? ? ? ? No. We acknowledged what was causing a deadly problem - and "WE" fixed or changed it. But "WE" seem to be living in an environment now where people refuse to acknowledge that certain things are causing a problem or that there even is a problem So we are caught in the chaos. Agriculture has a huge potential to capture carbone if we convert intensive chemical agriculture to "conservation agriculture". The potential is almost one tonne of carbone per ha per year for the first 5 to 10 years. At the Paris agreement in 2015 with the programm called "4 of 1000" it was decided to convert intensive griculture to "conservation agriculture". The full potential is close to 100 giga tonnes!

I was working in Nuclear Fusion research center for 2.5 years. the reason why it's not popular, as Dr. Steven said, it's mostly because people is scared with the word of "Nuclear". From research point of view, Nuclear research is extremely expensive. currently in South east asia, only one country that has one kind of nuclear fusion device (Tokamak), which is Thailand. By this point of view, it will be interesting if Pak Gita started to interview scientist from Thailand. Since the culture is quite close with Indonesia and the politic is not so far different than Indonesia. I also keep wondering, why Thailand research become more and more advance than their neigbouring country.

wow, it's really great working in Nuclear Fusion research. But, based on the last data that I checked, only the US and France which are significantly generating power from nuclear, while other countries that were previously nuclear electricity dominant like Germany and Japan show a considerable decline. Germany has experience with nuclear with no significant accidents, they have the technology, talent, and capital but they prefer to shut down their nuclear plants. I think for Indonesia's case, it's better to keep developing renewable and using coal with CCUS instead of trying risky things like nuclear power plants.

It is hard to predict increase of temperature. As it gets warmer the oceans absorb more energy and rainfall increases absorbing more energy. What will happen is the ice melt will increasing more rapidly as the temperature rises more at the poles than the equator. So you will get more ice melting with less rapid rise of temperature. Keep in mind sea level rise will be much higher at the equator, more accessible for heating and generating more cloud cover and rainfall. So globally a hot, humid muggy mess, with more tropical storms, with cities on low lying coastlines closer to the equator suffering the most from flooding. Not so much the planet burning alive, more about the more active movement of water, more rain and more storms, water from the poles to the equator. Low lying regions closer to the equator will suffer the most. The band of tropics will expand further north and south.

The modern world is an utter anomaly. After discovering oil, GDP, longevity, quality of life, nutrition and many other stats soared to unprecedented levels. In less than 100 years an astronaut hit a golf ball on the moon. You cannot run a modern economy and all of the wonders it provides without inexpensive reliable energy as its foundation. Monetary systems have to be remodeled as part of the overall strategy. World debt has to be wiped clean to free up resources and a wartime industrial footing needs to be taken to reduce carbon emissions. The clean age has to be ushered in immediately on a global scale. Wars have to be outlawed by the United Nations (An institution that needs to be empowered with actual authority over individual nation states). Not meeting aggressive emissions agreements need to be a crime against humanity and punishable by a tribunal with serious consequences. Every individual in the developed world needs to be held to personal account for reducing their carbon footprint through laws.

Losing Antarctica's sea ice means lots more heat to the ocean, specially when sun starts to shine more in the area. Recent study estimates that at 2C sea level will rise 12-20 meters over few centuries. (And that could mean 20-40 metres of sea level rise in northern hemisphere due to additional gravitational changes.) This year is likely to end up over 1,5C limit (baseline 1850-1900). (Not permanently nor climatically, yet.) And next year is likely even worse. It is approximated that we reach 2C in next 15-17 years... (Hansen, WMO) For daily temperature this has happened already in this year (baseline 1850-1900).

1,2C was the warming by 2022. This year is far worse. as I noted earlier.

Yes and the copium he provided failed for me. Mentioned how he was wrong about Salmon dying and thought that was decades away yet it happened now, along with the Alaskan snow crab mass extinction he might not even know about. He says its okay because we will create Carbon Capture. We haven’t even invented it fully yet, and by 2050 we should be taking HALF the carbon out but we don’t know how yet. Yeah. We are toast. Many of these folks in the know don’t want to come to terms with that reality yet, our new current reality.

The other problem is the result of Dumping "Energy" directly into the Environment, especially from Transport ( Cars, Trucks, aircraft, cooling systems involving Electronic Systems and now EV.s and industrial boilers, and other types of Heating systems ) in the case of cars more than 70 % of the energy in every liter / Gallon is being dumped directly into the environment... Doing the math ref. the amount of energy is frightening.... And humans are still trying to produce even more "Energy"....

How do you speak 1.5 hours on climate change and don't mention eating more plant-based even once? Instead just argue for carbon capture technologies that don't even exist, and that oil and gas companies are lobbying for to keep their party going. Everyone wants change but nobody is willing to change THEIR behaviors that contribute to the problem. Our zero accountability culture is the real problem that got us into this mess.

I love this well balanced analisis of things. Nuanced. Which is important. I do wonder how broadly one can be aware of the science: towards the end they both refer to the worsening weather events 'they witness themselves'. Is that truely correct? Even in the IPCC reports data show a different image. There surely is, however, a tremendous rise in media reports about such events... Just saying.

It's so nice to learn from Mr. Chu, about how he approaches solving a problem. That being to hypothesize & brainstorm first, without a book, and then read the book after. Lastly, test the idea / hypothesis against simple known truths of the past. What a great approach! I find this method keeps you creative, it doesn't bias the mind, and leads to discovery! He has wonderful optimism! What a lovely interview!

Going vegan and prevention of food to be wasted are cheapest and fastest solution for the disadvantaged communities to avoid the worst effect of climate disasters

disadvanteged communities are usually more or less vegan already, because meat is too expensive... the poor aren't the problem and they won't be allowed to be the solution

Sorry, this man is disconnected: our world is gearing-up for coal as never before - look at Germany right now. We never ‘phase out’ energy sources, we add-on with the new ones. Every country in the world is abandoning clean for cheap: it’s survival. How do you ‘disarm’ from coal and oil if it’s value is so high in man-hours of work? China isn’t slowing down. Russia launches floating nuke-plants into Arctic. Clueless figure lost wandering institutional hallways untethered from us in the real world.

At Pyramid International Laboratory in Nepal, it has been proven that cold air is sinking downhill cooling the glaciers. A thing scientists didn't know about. Many such discoveries will prove that nature is smarter than humans think.

I'm 16 minutes into this video and the topic has not yet been introduced. I'm not interested in the life of this scientist, I'm interested in the science he has to present. I'm out of time. Goodbye.

You can scroll ahead. Honestly suggest it. I went to an hour in, 1:12 or so and he begins 3° and climate talks, maybe theres more before that but i skipped. I found it interesting, still think its too late with feedback loops, etc. but the carbon capture and technology we haven’t even invented yet was ….. interesting to me.
