I've tried to communicate this to my therapist so many times. For so many years I've thought about myself as depressed and damaged from childhood trauma. I've practiced these ideas and thought patterns so much it's become a part of how I perceive my own identity. And changing these patterns is even harder than usual because I feel like I don't know who I am anymore if I'm not struggling
@resir9807 Жыл бұрын
I think damaged people still make a beautiful world. Maybe you can start to see that the people around you are all damaged in some type of way, and all we can do is try to find strength and happiness despite our suffering.
@AyselGwynith Жыл бұрын
I'd like to believe this is a stage in recovery. When we're hurt it is easy to get consumed by our problems and we often don't pay attention to other parts of our lives anymore. It is important to become aware of how our past has shaped our life and our persona to be able to move forward. I think it is only natural for a lot of us that it becomes part of our identy, because the matter of the fact is that our trauma and experiences shaped our life and who we are. I believe the next step is to let go of it and get excited to find out who we are now and what makes us happy. ❤

Weirdly enough, I stumbled into some of these techniques as a pre-teen. I didn't like who I was at that age. So, my solution was to work up some broad goals for myself (be confident, be personable, be a leader, etc), and slowly adapted my activities and thought processes to align with those goals. This fundamentally altered a lot of my personality. It took several therapists to figure out that this wasn't a crazy dissociation game I'd played on myself, but rather a surprisingly healthy way to grow up into a person I understood and liked.

Having read the book, there are some uncomfortable christian undertones to Maltz's methods. He basically requires you to accept a higher power, but the basics still work. Visualizing who you want to be and working towards it will always be better than autopilot
@michaelrmurphy2734 Жыл бұрын
Had no idea any of that existed. For all I know, "maltz" could have been something made up. "Christian" ideas? So more of "the power of positive thinking" crap, right? That Norman Vincent Peale used to play Americans for suckers! And we know who one of his more ardent "believers" is, right? Donnie and his father Fred. Empower themselves with "positive thinking" while having their tenants live in poverty with overpriced rent.

Excellent life advice followed by a satirical roast against USA, my favorite kind of satire. Just what I needed at a critical career-changing point in my life. (I fancy myself a starving Voiceover artist and am working on the steps of setting up my work space properly) The satire also reminds me of a joke I heard many years ago about 8 transactions taking place between 4 men all at different points in time. Here's how it works: Man A owes Man B 20 dollars but only has 10 dollars, Man B agrees to take the 10 and an IOU. Man B owes Man C 20 dollars but only has that same 10, Man C agrees to take the 10 and an IOU. Man C owes Man D 20 dollars but only has that same 10, Man D agrees to take the 10 and an IOU. Man D owes Man A 20 dollars but only has that same 10, Man A agrees to take the 10 and an IOU. Now Man A has 10 more dollars to pay back Man B and they are square Now Man B has 10 more dollars to pay back Man C and they are square Now Man C has 10 more dollars to pay back Man D and they are square Now Man D has 10 more dollars to pay back Man A and they are square So 10 dollars has been enough for 80 dollars. And the money is right back where it started!

I'm not well informed on the medical industrial complex, but I think it is substantially larger than the military industrial complex. ----- I had this psychology professor at school that said that after a pdoc has been in practice for six months the whole world starts to look like a cess pool. I think that psychoanalysis can be pretty punishing for both doctor and patient, but life isn't easy for anyone.
