i want to try clear something up, yes, i feel bad for uenoyama for getting involved with this but i can definitely say that mafuyu does love uenoyama. you honestly can't expect mafuyu to immediately be okay after what happened just because he's fallen for someone else. he saw the love of his life (at that time) dead. it's a sight he can't wipe away from his memory. no one wants to see the person they love like that. he must've been incredibly scarred and probably will be for the rest of his life. yuki was both mafuyu's childhood friend and boyfriend. yuki went through everything with mafuyu, he helped and supported him so much through all the problems mafuyu went through, without complaint or leaving him. mafuyu wants to move on but it's his lingering feeling of loss. he's still mourning yuki's death.

Yes, Mafuyu loves Uenoyama but it's also clear that he's still not over Yuki. Rushing into a new relationship when you're not over your ex yet makes for an extremely unhealthy relationship. It's not Mafuyu's fault that he can't get over Yuki but by getting into this new relationship, he will just keep hurting Uenoyama. I read the manga until the latest chapter and I can honestly say that at this point, I want Ue and Mafu to break up for Uenoyama's sake. Ue is literally BEST BOY, god his heart is HUGE, in the latest chapter he's working on something that's extremely painful for him as Mafuyu's current lover, that's why he should never be made to feel like he's SECOND BEST. Uenoyama deserves the WORLD but what he's getting right now isn't even close to that. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

It honestly break my heart very time i think about yuki and his relationship with Mafuyu. But what hurts me more is the fact that no matter how much Ue tries to help Mafuyu’s and no matter how much he loves him, Ue will never be Mafuyu’s all those first. He’ll never be able to Mafuyu’s first ever, even though Mafuyu is Ue’s first love. And in the manga we see Ue starting to realise and accept that but man it hurts... it hurts so bad. I think that’s the next arc, really assessing whether Mafuyuu loves Ue or he’s just convenient, and Ue is a lot like Yuki in some areas, but he’s not him and it’s pretty clear in the recent chapters that if Mafuyuu doesn’t get over this projecting of Yuki onto Ue, it’s done for. I’m hoping they have an actually conversation about it because it’s crucial for the storyline to develop in a healthy way

{with spoilers} I can see that Mafuyu really loves Ue but after that perfomance (their live concert on the anime), it's the first time where he *really* mourned Yuki because he can't bring himself to express all the sadness and longing, especially guilt before. So I can understand why most of his songs are about Yuki. In his own ways, Mafuyu is also trying his best to express his love to his new love, Ue. I think it started going downhill when he hesitated about debuting because he never thought about the future at all. He is taking his time in trying to figure things out but time doesn't wait to anyone. I guess that is what Shizu is trying to say, *if you're not sure or if you're still hesitating, stop* because there are two people in a relationship and in their band, they need to see everything in the same views and that means, they also need Mafuyu's decision. ps: i want to hear what do you think about it so far too

Here’s my opinion. Everyone is saying like poor Ue. And honestly me too, poor Ue but you can’t even say that. Yes it’s sad Ue won’t be to Mafuyu what Yuki was to him but that’s the whole point. That’s the plot of the movie and the anime portrays it well too. Mafuyu and Yuki had what the other was lacking, they were the perfect couple. Compare that to Ue and Mafuyu, and it can’t even compare but the other aspect is Ue helped Mafuyu grow so much. Because they’re not perfect, they both (mostly Mafuyu tho) grew in some dramatic way. Mafuyu is able to speak for himself and these emotions, he’s able to convey. Mafuyu wasn’t able to do that before because Yuki was a representation of his emotions. He was his other half so it was perfect, Yuki’s presence filled the gap of the silence he had to deal with since childhood. Also Yuki‘s been dead since first episode and that’s just mean if Ue takes these concerns of Yuki taking Mafuyu away from him. But what Mafuyu is doing throughout this whole thing though is remembering and honoring Yuki’s memory and the emotions Yuki brought forth from him. Ue helped him do that through song, so Yuki rather than an opponent or someone who’s taking Mafuyu’s loving emotions, Yuki is the ground work for Ue and Mafuyu’s relationship. Dedicating this song to Yuki is like lifting a burden from his heart. Carrying around that guitar felt like it was the only thing he had left of Yuki minus seeing Yuki in everyone and in Ue. Mafuyu is saying that his existence and singing what he feels is proof of Yuki making a big impact in his life. Unlike Fuyunohanashi, Mafuyu directly reaches out to Yuki because Fuyunohanashi was raw feelings but this is what he feels about Yuki after Ue impacted his life. Ue brought these lyrics, this song, this opportunity to Mafuyu to help them grow. Mafuyu isn’t sad to talk about Yuki, to be conflicted between the two because Ue is someone he learns love with all over again. They’re communicating and bonding and honoring Yuki’s memory together which is why I think this song is so beautiful. So no, not “poor Ue” I’m glad Ue is able to bring these emotions out of Mafuyu who’s singing wholeheartedly about his feelings for Yuki and letting that live on because Yuki couldn’t.

The things is Mafuyu NEVER treats Rtisuka as a Yuki-replacement. He misses Yuki, but he loves Ritsuka. Yeah, Yuki got some of Mafuyu’s first, but Ritsuka is getting his LASTS. Mafuyu genuinely loves Ritsuka and, at least to me, they have a bright future. Yuki died, and that hurts, but Mafuyu is getting on with his life and that future is Ritsuka. Would’ve never guessed Mafuyu’s seiyuu is in his early 30s. I love how he portrayed Mafuyu’s singing in the beginning episodes like how he’s supposed to be this amateur singer and purposely did not “sing very well in technical terms” but had that RAW talent in moving people’s hearts. And how as time goes in the manga Mafuyu improved so fast and pretty much got better in singing and playing guitar in such a short period of time. I really, really am frustrated that Ue is somehow treated as Yuki's replacement. I know that Mafuyu is still moving on and all, but it really frustrates me to death that Ue... Ugh, I can't even form words... Ue loves Mafuyu so, so much. So, so much. I am really, really hoping that Ue and Mafuyu will share that same love one day. I do hope that someday, Mafuyu can fully heal from Yuki, and be willing to give Ue all of his love. They both deserve it. They both need to be happy. From someone who has their ex passed away, I can see that Mafuyu is totally in love with Uenoyama, and his grief and trauma from Yuki's death - though still have impacts on the new relationship - does not change that fact. The process of grieving is not a linear process, it's more complicated than just one day realizing that you need to move on and then move on. Mafuyu loves Uenoyama for sure and definitely doesn't use Uenoyama as a replacement (he insisting on proper communication when Uenoyama seemed upset in one chapter means that Mafuyu values his love with Uenoyama), but he couldn't stop missing Yuki just because Yuki's dead, especially when Yuki's existence means more than just his ex. It is much healthier to acknowledge your feelings toward the goner and dealing with it, that's one of the lessons from Given.

(MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD) so after reading the manga and listening to this song it makes me so freaking sad. We learn to understand that Although Mafuyu is now with Ue he still has this "hole in his heart" and in the manga It's almost like Yuki is telling mafuyu that he will always be with him inside of the hole In his heart and will continue to watch over him and listen to him sing,so he tells him to continue on singing. And honestly I can't express how I feel exactly about this song but all I can say is that I absolutely understand how Mafuyu is feeling and I hope he will continue to grow but with Ue now and he will learn to be happy again even if he still holds onto these feelings for Yuki

Something I can’t understand is why ppl think mafuyu has to stop loving yuki in order to be with uenoyama. they want mafuyu to completely take him out of his life and forget him, just to give ue attention which is so selfish. Yeah but it's hard for Mafuyu. Think about that Yuki was his best friend, lover and savior. And he didn't had the change to say goodbye. Its okay that Mafuyu can't forget it. But it doesn't mean he don't love Uenoyama. He really love him, he just need to express his emotion in music to finally move on. And yes, you could ask "why did he running into a relationship if he isn't move on?" Because he can't get over it in an other way. This relationship with Ue help him a lot. Ue is not a rebound, Mafuyu loves Ue so much, so much. As someone mentioned in the comments, I too think Ue helped Mafuyu express the emotions he couldn't when Yuki was there. Yuki was his other half, a person who showed Mafuyu's emotions rather than himself. Ue wanted and helped Mafuyu to remove that burden in his heart and yes, it's hard for Ue. Yuki is actually the reason they're together. And when they're together, they're helping each other grow And as Mafuyu grows, he moves on and finally let's go of the pain. I think Mafuyu loves Ue, but grief is more often than not, not a linear process. Grief does not shrink, you grow and keep learning to live and cope with it. It's a long process and can take years to fully contain. I don't think one's inability to contain their grief (yet) means they are incapable of love. Sometimes the process comes hand-in-hand. Also, Mafuyu most definitely have a delayed grief response (which happens. I didn't start crying about my mom's death until 1.5 years after.) which makes things a bit more complicated. But him not being able to finish grieving doesn't mean he doesn't love Ue or using him as Yuki's replacement. Yuki makes Mafuyu who he is now, and the Mafuyu who Uenoyama love is shaped partly by Yuki. That is a fact that Uenoyama have to understand and accept. Yes, it's hard to love someone who is grieving, but it seems to me that Mafuyu is working to sort his grief anyway.

I just wanted to say that yeah, Ue and Mafuyu's relationship is and will be complicated ash, mostly because of what Mafuyu has been through and because of how Ue doesn't know much of it. But they found each other when they needed each other the most (if that makes sense). Uenoyama felt stuck and like he wasn't really doing anything correctly, nor doing anything for anyone. And Mafuyu had recently lost his first love. And that's, from my point of view, what makes their love unique and just superior. They tried their best to meet each other halfway and tried their best to be there for each other, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Their love is just... pure, and that's why they're my fave couple lolz.

I kind of really feel bad for ue becuase uenoyama isn't really uenoyama for mafuyu, to him he's more like a replacement for yuki. He can't get over yuki and it's like uenoyama is his escape from it. It kind of sucks for uenoyama becuase while mafuyu will be uenoyama first love and only love, the same does not go for mafuyu. It also feels like mafuyu will never get over yuki. The reality is, that if he were to see yuki again, he'd probably leave uenoyama and forget about him. I kind of don't like mafuyu character becuase of this. I truly love the current flow of the story now but sometimes I still think that mafuyu&uenoyama's relationship was kinda rushed. I do believe that mafuyu really does love ue but I guess he is still not over with his love and mourning for yuki. It might have been better if they had got together in the later chapters. Ya know..."don't make decisions when you are sad". Mafuyu should have come in terms with his mourning and love for yuki first before having a relationship with Ue. For me the way it was rushed, I was not really hooked into their romance. The author should have taken it slowly with the confession scene. I guess mafuyu&uenoyama's relationship would have be more romantic if they got together maybe after ue finishing yuki's song? Or the arc after that.

okay lets talk about something . you guys are all saying that you all feel bad for ue, and although I do too, I can completely understand mafuyu's side. it's not like mafuyu can control his first love. yuki was literally his childhood friend and first love and helped him through so much regarding his abusive father . imagine your s/o that has helped you through so much and has shown you so much love with a rope around his neck, with no life in his eyes. mafuyu has gone through so much pain, more than I can imagine, and he wasn't even able to express the pain and emotion that he felt until he met ue and the band and was able to sing fuyu no hanashi. he wasn't able to CRY and that must have hurt so bad. yeah, i feel bad for ue because mafuyu makes more songs about yuki than him , but mafuyu cant just get over yuki just like that . the songs are meant to express that unexpressed grief that mafuyu couldn't get out . with time , mafuyu will get through it with ue's help hopefully :)
