I had a (brown) Gen 1 Zune back in high school and the first couple of years of college, and, despite the hardware issues, the subscription model was actually a game changer. At the time, being able to download unlimited music and put it on a mobile device felt like a cheat code, and I legitimately don’t think I’ve ever been more into music than I was during that period. In a pre music streaming world, it was legitimately incredible to be able to explore new bands with no restrictions. It was such a great feature that, even though I switched back to the Apple ecosystem in like 2008 when I moved over to iPhone, I still ended up buying a separate Gen 2 Zune to listen to music on. For all of its faults, if Microsoft had found a way to better capitalize on and evolve that particular business model, who knows? Maybe we would all have Zune subscriptions instead of Spotify today.

I loved the Zune HD specifically, but I hated how hard it was to find accessories for it and the 'apps' to doenload werent that good and mostlly random games. They eventually made the interface integrating better too, but it was too late. The Zune HD finally died and I had a warranty on it. To my surprise, they say they dont make it anymore or dont have any. So i was credit the value of the Zune HD. Sad times man.

Back then when the Zune and the iPod were out, I went with the iriver. The iriver was such a cool device, it had a little haptic scroll pad, rechargeable battery, I can't remember how many songs it held though.

I thought about buying a Zune because it had way more storage than an iPod. You didn't even mention that fact. In the end I bought neither.

Interesting that Apple never tried the social angle until Ping many years later...

The zune could have been a hit but much like Windows phone Microsoft just doesn’t know how to market their products that are not Windows. Not to mention the iPod had already been out and had five generations by the time the zune came out. Also rip to former CNET editor James Kim @ 2:43 who passed away back in 2006.

No, Microsoft's products will most likely fail. They never know what people want and make terrible products. It's not about marketing or timing. It's basically that their products sucks.

I had a friend who had the Zune and since we were in the same band we would add songs to our iPods to go home and learn to play at shows. I asked him why he had a ZUNE instead of the iPod because he always had to bring his laptop just to add music to the Zune (might as well just use the laptop). He said "I didn't buy it...I won it at a giveaway, there is no way I would buy this hunk of junk! The words Hunk of Junk inspired an original song by the same name about a guy who buys all the latest electronics and discards them in a pile once they fall out of fashion!

What? You also needed to use a computer to add songs to iPods…
@dan83812 ай бұрын
You did not need a computer to add songs to a zune especially in the later models.
@redslate23 күн бұрын
If we're talking like-for-like generation, you needed a computer to transfer files to iPod just the same. And, the Zune software was far more useful, supported more file types, including mp4, and didn't have insane built-in copyright protections. The Zune could actually share songs wirelessly, albeit limited to 3 replays.

Microsoft marketing always falls flat, especially with product names. Zune. Surface. Cortana. Bing. Kin. The list goes on …

There is a warehouse somewhere loaded with never sold Zunes.

I bought one. I actually love the screen and I wanted to be different bc everybody else had a iPod. Well, there is a reason the iPod is amazing. The zune was a freaking brick to put anywhere. The software wasn't that amazing either. Apple iTunes was a much better experience. I used it for 3-4 months and bought a tiny iPod mini clone instead.

Did you know that red vs blue made a promotional video for the zune that was pretty funny, it promotes and makes fun of the zune at the same time.

The ads actually remind me a lot of the very successful ‘jump in’ Xbox 360 campaign and maybe. That’s kinda what they were going for?

Competition ! I liked that a big company MS would provide Apple some competition. I got a Zune HD which I enjoyed for it's HD Radio ... why buy expensive songs when I could listen for free on HD radio (which had very few ads). I toyed with the Zune store and even got a dock for the computer. I tried the subscription service and got some free songs. I liked it, but it didn't have the pizazz of an iPod nor the expense !

Well the Nokia 5300 and phones like it dropped you really didn’t need a second media player unless it was a iPod… which was more fun and fashionable to have. If you had a blackberry you grabbed a cheap mp3 player or a iPod

My GF at the time had a Zune and we both liked it but it was F'd up, as mentioned, by MS. I do have to disagree that the Ipod was a comparatively "easy" experience. Same GF got me a nano with the screen, super cool looking, went to put MY burned CD's on it...Apple said "Nope" and though I was gonna buy them AGAIN. Told her sorry and asked for receipt, went to Best Buy, got me a Sansa Clip and NEVER looked at Apple again.
