Came here to say this. Aaron was dead wrong saying the DP was a waste of time
@mastrFlex2 жыл бұрын
I've pulled a turbo from that gen Subaru, and you MUST take off the downpipe, as there are studs on the turbo for the downpipe. Also the video mentioned listening for the blow off sound, which isn't a thing on a WRX. They use bypass valves instead. The ECUs are programed to expect air from the bypass. You can do some real harm slapping a blow off on a wrx.
@christianbutcher5422 жыл бұрын
@@mastrFlex yes sir. Can’t throw a blowoff valve in any turbo car without a tune and expect good things to come of it. But people just wanna hear the ps ps lol little do they know an external waste gate is really what makes a turbo sound mean af.
@nicholasgunson2945 Жыл бұрын
@@mastrFlexnot really true. Maybe newer Subarus. Venting fully to atmosphere (which is what gives the psshh noise) is never good for any turbo car. However it won’t ruin the motor fast. Car will just run more rich and turbo will be working harder. Full recirc or even worse, blocking the bov will cause more issues, as it builds up excessive pressure at higher psi. Best option is a dual port bov like what gfb sells. Can set to part recirc, part atmospheric. So it only releases what’s needed into the atmosphere then recircs the rest so boost doesn’t have to build all the way up again - less wear on the turbo.

5:38 Yes, the down-pipe DOES need to come off. It is impossible to pull the turbo without the down-pipe coming off after the intercooler is removed. @fever41742 жыл бұрын
@@mr.pissedoff1903 they’re a huge help too though. With a code scanner you can read any code that the car is saying is the problem it’s experiencing, coolant and oil temp, oil pressure, your LAMBDA, fuel trims, fuel pressure, boost, etc. For example he was looking at the temp gauge to see if head gaskets were the issue. Without a sensor for that, he wouldn’t know until it started to run poorly. At which point the engine is damaging itself big time. Also I want to say that this isn’t a mechanics degree channel by any means, but to say you don’t learn is just silly. He learned the symptoms of a blown turbo at the very least. I'm looking for a decent RSX type S 02-04 transmission (X2M5) for a swap. Dude they are so rare and I only got around 2k to play with since I'm 17. I wanna put one in my mr2 spyder already!

Tim trying to re-install that inter-cooler; I feel your pain, best trick for me was using the handle of a hammer when pressing the big tube on, then using handle on the smaller tubes in the bottom right.

this video actually helped me allot. here i was thinking maybe something was wrong with my turbo in my 15 wrx but the information in this video was enough to put my paranoia at ease

What's interesting at 7:10 in the video, he said taking things off is usually easier than putting it back together. In my mechanical experience of about 7 years now, consistently I have always had a difficult time taking things apart than putting them back together. It usually takes me 2-3 times longer to take apart than to put together.

I genuinely believe that subarus are (until you have to split the crank case) some of the easiest cars to do all your maintenance on. Oh, also having to pull the intake manifold off is a PITA on ~2005+ drive by wire models

Turbo subaru engine bay is quite cramped though. The newer ones have the oil filter on top which is nice, but the EJ is quite a pain in the ass
@brianaggson10742 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Any pre 2005 subaru is very chill to work on. Once you get into 2006 and above little things make them annoying like secondary air pumps and fly by wire. I've been building and working them since I was 18 and my fastesttime for pulling a motor is a little over 39 minutes now. Its still a love hate relationship unfortunately

Pulled the EJ25 out of my WRX by myself in about 3 hours to change the clutch. Changed the first blown turbo in about 1 1/2 hours. Downpipe off is the best way to go.

I love cars but I’ve always had trouble understanding them, these videos are not only super fun to watch but I’m also learning a LOT from them

As a person named Tim who owns a 2004 sti, I can say I both love and hate my car. Working on it has to be one of the most annoying things. But the satisfaction of getting everything to work is worth it ❤

This channel is how I'm learning about the ins and outs of automotive mechanics. I'm super excited 😄 Always wanted to learn but never had someone to teach me. Thanks Donut. 🍩

I could’ve diagnosed that without even test driving it. Replacing it on the other hand? I’d be there for about 6 hours, drunk, cursing with busted knuckles😂 I know from experience. Blew 2 turbos and replaced them both. Props for completely replacing a turbo in 2 hours

I work construction and a lot of this looks like plumbing, electrical work. The rest seems like experience and knowing what pieces cause what effects. It’s really cool and this is sparking a passion for me. Does anyone know any good apprenticeship programs?

I think it took my dad, a mate and I an hour just to get the intake on the turbo on my car, probably because I put the turbo on before the intake, I think I should've put the intake on then slid on the turbo. Also, there's a bolt under the down pipe on these for the up pipe, getting the downpipe out of the way was the correct thing to do, as can be seen because he got the car done in under 3 hours

I love the guy who was like... He's bugging about down pipes just take it off.... 3 seconds later... the turbo is off
