Күн бұрын

Dr. Chris Barry is a transplant surgeon and researcher at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
In this talk, Chris discusses the power of modern transplant surgery to touch people's lives. He also talks about the obstacles that prevent our society from realizing its true potential to help others through organ donation. His talk resounds with a call to action.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

My brother was 19 and healthy when he was run over by a drunk. That night, at the hospital...in shock...they came in and asked us if we would donate his kidneys and liver , heart lungs, cornea's .....my parents were crying, and asked me.... 17 years old if we should. I said yes he would want to help. They decided to help others using my brothers body. This was in 76. I'm 58 now...he was a teenager. life is short people. I have a donor card if something happens. You should to.Matt.

My mum had to chose between her kidneys or me when she was pregnant 20 years ago, she chose me and has now lived with a donated kidney for 14 years. There are no costs for the organ receiver in Denmark but due to laziness people still doesn't sign up. Tmrw I'm doing a speech in my class to convince my classmates to sign up as organ donors as I am still the only one registered in a class of 27 students! Chris I loved you video it has given me a lot of inspiration for my speech, thank you so much!

Best Quote was @ 03:35 "If your not an organ donor when you die, Your taking a lot of people with you" IMHO , once you die as neither you or your family have a need for the organs anymore, upon death all viable organs become property of the state. Worst is places that allow family members to choose who gets the organs and who doesn't.

Me too. Ma mum had a lung transplant which helped her live another 14 years. I always felt I owe my organs to the world. I researched the topic and - well - this research totally changed my mind. Living donation is one thing - to be an organ donor once declared "brain dead" is something else. This is an other misleading ad for organ donation. Before you become a donor, please research the topic! No one in the know talks openly about the procedures. e.g. People declared 'brain dead' are far from dead. The body is kept on life support until harvested. Muscle relaxants are used as a rule (otherwise operating wouldn't be possible). To my knowledge only in Switzerland it is law to use general anesthesia. After the organ harvest - a donor is worth 500.000 to one million Euros- the now very dead body has clenched jaws and hands, children's hair often turned grey or white. I did a thorough research since my mother was transplanted. I felt I owe the world my organs. I changed my mind after I found out what it really means!

"A simple signature" should not be that simple and it does not come close to describing the tenuous and heart breaking process by donor families. The process could easily be described as not being an informed consent. The reality is the donor cards and donor registries deprive the surviving donor family members the natural right to choose the outcomes of their loved one's lives and final moments. Its an incredibly complicated process in often stressful and emotional circumstances where patient-donor family members are often blind-sided when they are told their loved one will be an organ donor despite their reservations. Organ donation is great, but do it right and learn the process. Don't forget, organ donation is BIG-BUSINESS and despite organ donation companies being "non-profit," the non-profit status is very fruitful for institutions that peddle in organ donation.

i work with families of registered and non registered patients. I am very thoughtful and never for moment forget how difficult these conversations are for families. It is a complicated process with about 100 staff who truly care to make donation happen. Your yes or support of someone else's decision to want to save lives if something sudden happened that ended their life is humbling. Families are faced with so many decisions when their loved one is in an ICU. I always hope that when their loved one has registered their decision to donate, it would be one less decision to have to make. Being able to re-write the ending of someones story as a life saver, is something almost every family I have walked through the journey of donation says helps their grief.

People don't sign up to be donors because of laziness, not ignorance or apathy. The best way to resolve this is do an Opt-Out system rather than an Opt-In system (current US default is opt-in). Countries that do opt-out provide the freedom for people that don't want to donate to get off the list, but the numbers of people that do donate skyrockets when you make this simple switch. This is something that effects people of all races, religions, ideologies, etc.

No, No and NO. What gives anyone the right to make a law where you must opt out or the state gets your organs??? So you are concerned about lazy people not opting in, but are perfectly fine with lazy people that don't opt out get there bodies raided??!! People die everyday. We can't save everyone. If lazy people don't opt in, too bad.

Being an organ donor is one of the greatest legacies to my life that I could ever give. Aside from giving birth to my own child, there is nothing greater that I can do in my lifetime that could ever measure up to organ donation. My mother in-law was an organ donor and saved 4 lives and one person was given the gift of seeing her grandchild for the first time. Don't assume you are not "healthy" enough to donate. My mother in-law smoked like a chimney and they still transplanted her lungs!

I've just put myself on the organ donation register. I personally don't like to think about my death, however I am happy to know my organs will be of great help to save others in need of them after my passing. The scary truth is that none of us know what is around the corner and I know if I needed an organ I would not refuse. So it's a great deed to give something back.

This video is very persuasive for why each person should be an organ donor. He begins with the statistic that 6935 people are dying waiting on the donors list, 19 people every day for an entire year. Which is the equivalent to 13 747 jets filled with passengers and those planes crash, killing everyone. Beginning a video like this is definitely a good way to begin because makes people think harder about what organ donation can do overall in everyone’s lives. He also says later on “if you’re not an organ donor when you die, you’re taking a lot of people with you” this quote is likely to connect with the audience that he is speaking to on a deeper level. When Dr. Chris Barry spoke about that he believes organ donation should be given as a company is talking to their employees about health care. This would give the employee time to think about becoming a donor and do some research on the topic. I definitely agree that organ donation is not something most people like to talk about and that people struggle to understand how many people they have the chance of saving after they are dead. Organ donation is a great way to make death something very meaningful and save people’s lives in the process.

There are only about 8,100 deceased organ donors annually (and that number doesn't seem to change that much over the years), but there are almost 122,000 people waiting at this moment. Have a conversation with your family that is honest and explains what the family will see when you are declared brain dead. But, how do you have this conversation when the agencies that procure organs do not provide that information to those considering donation. You will be maintained on a ventilator with multiple IV lines receiving medications to maintain the health of your organs. You will appear as you were in life but have been declared "brain dead". What does brain death mean? What are the criteria? You will undergo multiple tests some invasive while your family waits for the time your organs will be harvested. This may take days and you may not be able to be with your loved one in those final moments as your loved one may need multiple scans or a cardiac cath or a bronchoscopy to evaluate your organs. There will be no moment while your corporeal life ends instead it will be completed in a operating room after your organs are removed and saline is run into your body. My sister saved three lives with her donations. I wish nothing but health for those she gave her organs to but her family didn't want this for her and once you sign up as a donor your family had no say to rescind it. I called this period of time a "grey" period between death and donation and one in which your family must dwell. So perhaps honest information from Donate for Life that can be shared with families may lessen the trauma when families must traverse though this "grey" uninformed. Are the lives she saved somehow more important than final moments that can never be shared ?(knowing that the outcome would not have changed). Deciding to be an organ donor should be done carefully and should be discussed with loved ones. It is the most altruistic act but please share what the family will experience prior to donation when they are dealing emotionally with your loss.

I took myself off of the donor list when I realized that people do not have a choice to opt out of organ donation. Its only fair that EVERYONE can have a say in whether or not they want to be organ donors while they are alive. It should not be a problem to allow people to opt out, the same as they allow them to opt in on their drivers license. If anyone chooses to opt out of organ donation, for whatever reason they may have, their families should not endure being asked and questioned during such an emotional time at the hospital. As I understand it, the dying person is tested for their potential to be organ donors, without the families permission. Is any other elective medical procedure allowed to take place with out the family knowing and approving it. I know organ donation is not charged to the family, but I wonder if the testing is, without them knowing. Give me a choice to opt out, the same as you give people the choice to opt in. I don't want my family to have to endure being encouraged to go against what I want. Family members do not usually have their family members advanced directives on hand to make a decision on behalf of a dying loved one.

Bob Wilson Hi Bob, Not sure what state you live in, but you should be able to opt out the same place you opted in. That's the way it works in Nebraska. As a heart recipient nearly 2 1/2 year's out it is difficult to express in words how grateful I am for this extra time I received with my family. :)
@bobwilson3595
@bobwilson3595 9 жыл бұрын
I am happy for you that you have the extra time with your family. For those that want to be donors, it is a wonderful option for them. Our state does not have a opt out, and most states do not, just as it is stated in this video that getting change is not likely to happen. Donating is a personal choice, that the individual should be allowed to make. If a person does not want to be a donor, I dont feel it is fair to leave that option to their family, when it would be very simple to add the option the same as they do for those who want to donate. There are stories of patients waking up during the organ donation process, so what IS the definition of brain dead. Its a definition that was created to harvest organs. www.bookwormroom.com/2013/07/09/time-to-take-that-organ-donor-sticker-off-your-drivers-license/ I understand why most states do not have this option: 1. There is a greater chance of family members making an emotional on the spot decision that appeases those who are encouraging a donation. 2. Each donor can bring up to $2 million dollars profit into the medical community Its a personal choice, that EVERY individual should have, not just those who want to be donors. Is my only alternative to have "I am not an organ donor tattoo's across my chest" Living wills and advanced directives are great, but they have been challenged or ignored.

I also wanna add, It must be hard for people living in a country where you know that if you don't have the money or "Insurance" to pay for a major operation you will die!! Here i don't have such worries. No matter if i need triple bypass or a new liver, Gov will pay for it. (But That's the way it should be in any modern Civilized Country Gov should pay for all Medical and Dental Cost's)

+Ben Jay I can't even comprehend that just south of my countries border, people have to fork over sums in the tens of thousands of dollars when they need a surgery, even over a hundred thousand sometimes, *people need to take out loans and mortgages for this.* It's absolutely horrible. But Americans have really brought it on themselves, just look at the way they sneer and hiss at words like "socialism" or "healthcare".

Tell you what Chris, you offer the surgery to every one even if you are not going to be paid by an insurance policy, or perhaps not get paid at all, you donate your service to any one who needs it , and I will be a donor and I will go door to door getting signatures, the real issue is that many more die that are not even apart of your statistiics because they never get seen because they don't have insurance, insurance rates have soared due to fraudulent claims, incorrect billing, and over charg

Donation is a very personal choice and many thought processes go into that choice. I understand the passion, but saying that if someone "doesn't" donate when they die is killing or as he said "Taking many more with you" puts guilt on people. My body was given to me, it's really all anyone really owns. If I chose not to donate I am not killing or taking anyone with me. Being a medical professional does not give you the right to play God and with that said, somethings that can happen or are possible shouldn't in the eyes of many. It's a two way street.

I would just ask yourself this...if you or someone you loved could be saved by an organ donor...would you say yes and receive the gift of life? If yes, then why not share? The chances of anyone here becoming an organ donor are slim...but I really want people to just answer the question. Yes, being an organ donor is an autonomous decision. I just wish someone said yes so that my cousin didn't have to die at the age of 49.

perhaps less people (NOTE: I don't mean ALL the people) would need organs if they lead a healthier life-style. You spent your life drinking, smoking and eating crap and by the time they are 50 they find out they need some new organ.

so this guy is saying if we do not donate we take people with us. what a crock of shit. Ive worked in a hospital for over 20 years and I see what ACTUALLY happens behind the scenes of talking a family into donating their loved ones organs. I will never donate and at times I am asked what would I do and I would tell them personally I wouldn't do it. The system is not fair for everyone. I don't care if you believe this or not but I have seen it first hand so I know what I am talking about

People have recovered just before the organ harvesting, AFTER the families gave consent. A hospital was fined a measly $6000 for a mistake that could have cost a life. Another family sued and won. I have to wonder if financial gain tops the right of a person to get proper medical care when they are a donor. I also changed my mind about becoming a donor..

Needs to get out are you telling me you've seen relatively healthy people deliberately being put into an induced fake coma ? we would love to hear your stories about what you seen. by the way I think the speaker was probably paid a lot of money and that he's a shill for this really corrupt industry that knows each of us is worth over half million dollars in parts

M C I don’t know what you don’t understand, but organ transplantation is a multi billion dollar industry and without organs there’s no industry. Organs come from deceased individuals, that what he says - the doctor. He should be honest with the public and let the people know, that organs are taken from people who are still very much alive, not sedated only paralyzed and in many instances aware of what is going on, cannot move or speak. Patients are on ventilator when organs are removed and you cannot place a dead man on the ventilator because it wouldn’t work. Organs start decomposing 5 minutes after death. Oh and I forgot “Brain Death” the very famous diagnosis developed in 1968 to justify organ harvesting. This is like a picture from very cheap horror movie. He says that it’s killing him because people are refusing to fall for his trap. It isn’t killing him, but his bank account. I thought at first that he’s an actor, but when I learned that he’s a doctor, I was speechless. He would do better working as a comedian. Oh we donate organs, hospital and provider will make tons of money and we won’t be charged for that. That doesn’t make sense, I think we should be billed for donation too.

In my dreams, at first The first few nights i saw you in my dream, but not long after, i was awaken and being with you and in a short span of time, i could feel your presence at all times. You donated your liver to me and gifted me with life, made my family overjoyed, keep me alive to see my grandchild, you gave me hope and future, and in that, you become part of me, flesh and bone, like a brother and even closer. Unable to pay my obligation to you, I wish there was a word in human's vocabulary to describe my utmost thanks and gratitude to you,, but ‘"THERE IS NONE””.
