Well-meaning, loving and motivated parents often struggle with their teenagers - in part because our modern culture has created an extended culture far beyond logical or natural boundaries, while simultaneously worshipping our own youthfulness. Dr. Kenneth Wilgus challenges parents to think differently about how they raise their kids. You can find his book on our store here: store.focusonthefamily.com/fe...
He provides practical insights to help parents of teens and preteens better navigate the adolescent years with healthy interaction and boundaries, while giving their teens the opportunity to grow up.

Dr. Wilgus, my middle school girl started to ignore me. I am thankful to find your clip. Yes, early childhood and adolescent are totally two different world and definitely I cant parent them the same ways. Thank you so much fo your tips.

Paul taught that becoming adults means to put “selfish ways behind me”. That can only happen when a person has learned “how” to make decisions that cause one to be able to care for themselves., physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. After, we can take care of ourselves, we are, now, able to be concerned with what we may want to do for someone else. None of this is on a straight line continuum. It’s in steps forward and steps backward. Telling them that you believe that they will be successful, even learning from their mistakes. Telling them, “i am FOR you!” Be confident for them.

Teaching Proverbs for years before teen hood, just Proverbs would change the course of history.

I see many parents that let their kids run wild. Just the opposite. I don’t know.

That seems to be the way I see things too and if you give a curfew or boundaries you are the awful seeming parent.

This guy is off base. He is not correct in his assumption of childhood and adulthood. Moving on.

Wow, I can't disagree more, unfortunately. Romeo and Juliet? Really? Do you know how long ago that was? Do you know they did not have to do with the issues that today's kids do? We let our child make decisions at 12 and 13 and it got her sexually assaulted. Dealing with the aftermath The last 9 years had been horrific, Not to mention expensive. We now have a 21-year-old non-working, suicidal, depressed, extremely overweight, mentally tween individual.
