Late Harley-Davidson 107's Are the Mistake You Make Overlooking

Don't count out the Harley-Davidson 107, just because everyone wants a 114 doesn't mean it's a bad engine or underpowered. In fact Harley-Davidson 107 powered motorcycles can make plenty of useable power and cost less to get into than a 114. With the cost being less this gives you some room to make some real power with a basic cam swap and chest upgrade. Depending on your budget you might even be able to go further with head work and or bore upgrades. For sure do not dismiss the shorter stroke, that short stroke reminds us of the 4 inch stroke on 88 inch twin cams converted to 95 inchers.

Would you go for a 107 engine or spend the extra on 114 with the longer stroke crank?
@semperfipar1299
@semperfipar1299 Жыл бұрын
I would do the shorter stroke 107 because of the power delivery. I would upgrade the engine to a gear drive cam(new cams too) and the oil pump upgrade, must have maximum oil delivery and then.....Might as well put a supercharger on it...and never put Harley Davidson oil in it. LOL! It seems like all of the problems with the M8 happen above 107?

Yeah that's how it always goes for Harley. The smaller displacement engine quickly falls by the wayside. In a couple years the 117 will be the standard engine, there'll probably be a 121 for the CVO's and the 114 will be called the "small" engine. Whatever lol

If you think other motorcycle manufacturers stick with the same displacement indefinitely, you are kidding yourself.

And then the 121 will be the small engine just like how Harley Davidson came out with the 117 CVO and people still wasn't happy so they get the 131 crate engine and then made that into 140 engine it goes on and on and on 🤣🤣🤣 I'm happy with my cvo 124 drop in kit .

I think too many people focused on the displacement. It wasn’t quite big enough to draw people from the tried and true 103. What many failed to realize is how well these M8’s breath. With some simple mods and a tune, the 107 will really scream.
@xlrider1565

But, the weak links need to be addressed first. Yes, a four valve head design will obviously breathe. But little details confound me. Why they would design the oil return line to be routed as such ??? Not well thought out details. JMO. The EVO, still a benchmark of reliability, and simple, straightforward design.

Just finished my M8 107 Build with the guys at Moonshine Harley here in Franklin, TN . 22 Road King Standard... SUPERB Torque Curve and "always on" power. 121 Torque and 113 HP out of a 107! Wish I had a way to post the Dyno sheet here but man this thing is great. And to your point... I bought a 22 Road King, did ALL the engine build, plus suspension, Custom Dynamics light and STILL cost me less than a Stock RG Special out the door. AND I promise this bike will outrun any stock 114 :) For those interested... Build is a Star Racing 485 Cam ~ 64mm TB/Manifold ~ Fulsac Header ~ Khrome Werks Mufflers ~ Arlen Ness Big Sucker (for stock 107 cover) SE Cam plate/Oil Pump ~ Rekluse Clutch and Basket plus MHP smooth Compensator. All this plus a proper tune and the bike is fantastic.

I'm riding a stock '21 Softail Slim. It has plenty of power and I like the throttle and power delivery vs. the 114 Heritage I was also considering. I have owned many bikes, but this is easily one of my favorites. Does everything well, it's like the new UJM... lol. 114/107 It's really like splitting hairs, the difference is really not all that much especially stock (or with the same mods). I ride with guys that are riding twin cam 103 and none of them feel like they are lacking power. 107 is a fine engine.

I traded in my street bob 114 last week for a new 2022 Electra Glide 107. Wife decided she just wanted to ride 2 up and not on her own. I was approved for a loan from my bank and could have gotten either the Electra Glide standard or Road king standard 107 in the price range i was approved for. My father had Electra Glides for years so naturally i went with the bat wing fairing. I've noticed the 107 is a bit smoother than the 114. The 107 has plenty of power IMO even on a touring model. I ordered cobra 909 pipes and will be ordering a high flow air cleaner in the coming weeks. I will be doing a stage 2 kit over the winter as well. Although I'm not sure which kit I will do since I'm unsure if the warranty will be voided even with this FTC stuff going on with Harley-Davidson. Great video and I'm glad to see the 107 is still viable to some people.

Before the warranty was up I installed this cam, S&S cam plate and oil pump, Fuel Moto lifters and pushrods along with Tab Performance Zombie baffles slip ons. FP3 does a great job controlling managing everything. It’s a great set up and I love that cam. Just enough lope that you know it’s there at idle and turns on around 2100 RPM, and pulls hard past 5200. Thinking about trying the standard baffles, Zombies are to dang loud. Thinking my next add is a Darkhorse compensator and Hayden tensioner or maybe the manual adjustment Screaming Eagle. Those M8 heads flow great with the 4 valves. That cam shines in its overlap. Where I live in Ontario Canada, if a 114 hits the floor then it's gone in 3 days or less. Most are spoken for before they arrive at the dealership. @GixxerFoo Great video!! It comes at a perfect time. I need your advice I own a 2017 Road Glide Ultra with the 107, with a stage one done by the dealer My extended warranty expires this September. Been intrigued by putting in a torque cam. I know the pro street tuner is not as good as aftermarket but didn’t want to jeopardize my warranty initially. Now I have close to 40,000. Miles. I plan on keeping the motorcycle because I think on 2023 models there are going to be more demand than supply so that means no good deals. I owe nothing on my 2017 and have not had a once of problems. It runs like a top. Thing is I’m planning on buying another two years of warranty but if I do it, the aftermarket parts( which I feel is superior to screaming eagle parts) will void the warranty.. I value your opinion what would you suggest. Or what would you do if you were in this situation

Butt dyno! I forgot that term! I bought a new road glide with a 107 may 5th. On June 23rd I rented a 114 on my trip to Indiana. For 5 days I rode a good 4 hours per day except one day I rode for almost 6 hours. I am telling you that stock, both nearly no mileage, the butt dyno told me that the difference was nearly nothing. However it was a little my street glide rental might be a little heavier? Once I put stage 1 on my 107 (it did hit a wall at like 3200 rpm, although you could certainly go through it it was noticeable) I sincerely feel like it is all the motor for a guy who has never had the money to totally buy a ball busting Harley over a decked out 114 or more. So butt dyno s and speedometers don’t lie. Don’t think it is inadequate or something, it can really hang on the road.

If you’re building up a hot motor to spin for HP the 4.375 stroke is already a long stroke. Better ring seal less piston & rod to block side loading. And less piston speed than the 4.500 stroke. If you are making peak HP at 6,400 and shifting at 6,800/6,900 for the highest average HP from shift to recovery the 4.375 should be a better choice stay sealed & live longer. I’m picturing a 4.500x4.375 over square 139ci in my future.

You could take the 107 swap in a set of discarded (for upgrade) 114 cylinders and a set of custom pistons and get 112 Cu in, then put the Woods cam in. The pistons shouldn't cost that much and rings for 4 inch pistons are the most common on the planet. Small block Chevy, small block Ford, Dodge 360, etc. In reality though, Harley should just scrap the 107 and the 114 and start putting the 117 in everything. Then offer Screaming Eagles and CVOs in the 121 or 124 Cu In Engines. That 117 is awesome! If I was going to get a Milwaukee Eight, it would be the 117.

I've had used bikes and decided to buy new in 21 and went with the Electra glide standard. That's 6k that I saved more than paid for the screaming eagle stage 2 torque cam included new head pipe and 4.5 in street cannons. "Carmen Electra" glide pulls the Rocky mountain passes with style and grace, and my butt dyno sometimes pucker up, mmmhmm.

@@599Dan I've got a Twin Cam 103 Slim and it's a "daily driver" (not a 'garage queen'), so easy to live with. The crossbar on the 'Hollywood' bars allows a roll bag to be strapped on for trips away for a few days. If I thought seriously, I should track down a good used M8 107 Slim to replace my Twin Cam Slim. I bought the 103 Slim used at a good price, so probably won't lose too much value on it if I decided to part with it. One of the annoyances of the Slim is the OEM HD wheel spokes start to rust eventually. I've seen rusty spokes on the M8 Slim as well.

@@Jonathan-L I like the twin cam Slims, they look lower and more aggressive to me somehow, I think the back Fender might be slightly different? sounds like you have some history with your Slim I'm sure it would be hard to part with. Dealership has offered to buy my bike back several times. I'm told the slims are in high demand since they've been discontinued.

@@599Dan When I got my Softail Slim back in 2020 it was an opportunity I didn't want to miss out on. First up, the bike was 5 years old, only had 3000 miles on it, and had a stage 1 job (SE Heavy Breather, Bassani Firesweeps, V&H FP3 tuner, plus Mustang seat, LED headlight, Jack Knife pegs, swingarm saddlebag). The previous owner sold it to me for about $6000 less than what he paid, so it was a good deal, so I got a really good Softail with the extras for the price of a new 1200 Sportster. Luckily, I was able to head-hunt a really good independent HD mechanic, which also influenced the go-ahead with the purchase. Buying the bike was made easy, thanks to Gixxerfoo, Matt Laidlaw and Kevin Baxter. I'm halfway around the world from those guys, and never met them, but their KZbin clips really helped me make a sound decision. I've got no regrets with the Slim, and happy to get the last of the fully air cooled engines. I was put of the early Milwaukee 8 bikes with the sumping issues and compensator sprocket design, but if I was buying now I would probably go for a good used Sport Glide (love the 'convertible' style of being able to remove mini fairing & panniers). Just look at local used prices here in Western Australia, second hand Sport Glides are not much more expensive than a Slim or Street Bob or Low Rider 107. The Sport Glide is excellent value as a used bike due to the panniers, cruise control and rear suspension adjuster (no tools needed). A good stage 2 upgrade on a 107 would be awesome bang for buck, and what Gixxerfoo says about a 107 with stage 2 versus a stock 114 would leave money in your hip pocket (might help with the purchase of tires, which will get used more). So, do I feel left behind with my stage one 103 Twin Cam you may ask? Sort of, but again it's the last of the air cooled engines, it's got the cool factor, it makes a nice daily driver without giving it the garage queen TLC and it's a modern day classic 'messenger bike' ... I ride mine when I visit clients (luckily I don't need to transport big bulky items), so I get my recreation during my working hours. It's just one of the perks of the job to be able to ride your pride & joy during my daily work agenda. The Slim isn't perfect (OEM seat and aftermarket seats don't suit me, so a $30 air cushion from eBay helps a lot, even though it's not cool looking). The bike I really like the look of and that's the re-issued Electra Glide that pays homage to the 1969 model. And I love the Road King Special when it came out in Deadwood Green. Trying to decide on that elusive choice of "shall I get this particular bike now or wait for something better" can be a bit tough. I can't believe HD discontinued the Deluxe though. Crazy. Ride safe Dan! :)

Well honestly at that mileage you could pop a cam in there and go on down the road. New bearing though always and it's like 20 bucks that could save you a fortune. I would highly recommend upgrading the oil pump if you're bike is a touring model 2017 to 2019 to the redesigned oil pump though.

Love these videos. Harley cannot have an engine easily upgraded for a little bit of money. That goes against their ethos of selling a bike with a tool kit and a parts upgrade manual. It is a good model that has worked for them for a hundred years with the exception of the years just prior to AMF bailout. When you, the biker, can go to the aftermarket and build a better Harley than Harley that is telling. Thanks again for a really informative video.

S&S or Fuel Moto. Get the OEMs out the sooner the better. The rollers are soft and will begin to gall up on the cam lobes. With the Fuel Moto adjustable pushrods you can use the OEM tubes. S&S adjustable pushrods need their new tubes.

Wud up Foo! Good points, especially with the money savings but to play devils advocate, 10 hp you probably wouldn’t notice but 10 lbs-ft, you will absolutely feel. Second, here is my problem with Wood cams. Bob isn’t doing anything that S&S hasn’t tried , in short, his grinds are violent. Yes, they make power but he isn’t some genius that outwitted all the rest, he just knows people are willing to give up a smoother linear cam that’ll outrun it for a noisier , smack you in the face hard fall off cam. Personally, I think his cams are overrated and yes I’ve run them. YMMV Again, great video Foo.

100% on the cams. I wouldn't waste my money on mods unless going stage 2 or above with a proper tune as the cam will compensate for the needed backpressure this engine likes. Most guys with a stage 1 are lying to themselves with the numbers as they don't have the bikes tuned right.
