Do you think the Milwaukee 8 has the potential to be the next Evo with the right upgrades?
@MarkPalmer1000 Жыл бұрын
The aftermarket and independent shops have quickly jumped all over what can be done with the M8, and H-D themselves have been going crazy with upgrades. It might not end up the next EVO, but it's already assured itself a long lasting future. There was disappointment with the TC for many. H-D came up with something that has panned out to be better with the M8 while still staying true to the air cooled 45 degree design. Some people hate change, but it was necessary to compete.

Put 32000 on the LR - 27000 so far on the 21 St Gl Special and haven't had a single problem with any of them . And I've ridden through some major desert heat long distance . "Much smoother too" Why would you want smooth? If smooth is what you want, get a Goldwing. I have owned two Goldwings, and sold them both because they were just plain boring. Back in 2003, I got my first Harley, a 1989 FXRS Low Rider, in beautiful condition. I still have it. I absolutely love it. The sound and the feel is where the enjoyment of riding a Harley comes from. I rode Japanese cruisers for a long time before I was able to afford a Harley, albeit a used one. Night and day. 1. It's not an oil pump issue, it's an oil drainage flow issue. Gravity feeds the oil pump oil. A restriction from an oil sump hole tapped too deep at the factory with a 1/2" NPT tapered plumbing tap, past the No Go line, causing a defect in the engine case's ability to drain the oil back to the oil pump. This causes the oil sump plug to be screwed in too deep, cutting off the oil drainage flow to the oil pump. Solutions are shortening/grinding down your oil sump plug 0.250" of an inch, or buying a Feuling shorty sump plug. My 2018 M8 107 Sport Glide has no issues ever with sumping and the stock oil pump, because my sump hole was tapped properly, not past the NO GO line, and the sump plug doesn't thread in too deep to the bottom of the engine case. It should fit barely flush or protrude somewhat. Teflon Plumbers tape can help, too, 5 or 6 wraps seating the sump plug more shallow. Box stock, I ride the torque, not the rpm's and HP. So far, very, very reliable, tons and tons of torque for a 695# softail. Ride's kind of rough and primitive, compared to my BMW R1250 GS, though.

I bought a 2018 Road King Special. The motor started ticking at about 2,800 miles. I brought it in and they said it needed the Push Rods adjusted. At 3,200 miles the engine's top end was blown. @augustinasvilkas Жыл бұрын
Just to make it clear the trask vented transmission cover and the fueling vented dipstick do the same thing. They vent the crank case pressure to alleviate the oily air coming into the intake trough the breather hoses. The after market vented trans cover does not actually add venting to the transmission. There are 3 separate areas under the cover and one of them goes to the crankcase. I have the trask cover on my bike. These mods may help with sumping as it reduced the crank case pressure. And i can say it definitely helps with the oily intake air. edit: If i remember correctly on my 2023 stock trans cover there was already a little breather tube that i had to switch over to the trask one,this may be a trans breather. If you dont have this on the 17-19 bike then that might be beneficial to the trans/primary oil issue

107 has been known to be great and reliable specially if you fix oil pump issue. I think they screwed up with the 114 as the cylinder sleeve was completely half the thickness and was breaking in chunks inside the crank area. There is a groove on the bottom of the cylinder sleeve and the jug. Haven’t heard anything good about the 114. I’ll probably buy an M8 within the next eight years but I’ll keep driving my late 90s Evo’s and my late 103‘s… there’s a pattern here, always wait five years before you buy the new engine…

The problem with overlap from an emissions POV, is that raw fuel exits the engine while both valves are open. This means more hydrocarbons that the catalytic converter has to deal with. Left over exhaust gas in the cylinder is EGR. So if you are operating at 100 percent VE and 3 percent of that volume is EGR then your VE is actually 97 percent.

The venting of the primary case, as standard from MY20 onwards, definitely stops the oil carry over from transmission to primary. The vented transmission however has nothing to do with solving this oil carry over, the transmission has been vented to ambient for ages already. This vent it is even the unlucky driving force behind the oil carryover to primary, so from MY20 solved by applying the same ambient pressure at the primary vent. That is the pressure equalizing, stopping oil carry over flowing through the hollow main shaft and passing the clutch push rod into the primary. What people mean with the vented transmisison cover is actually extra crank case venting (most of the time used to create open crank case ventilation to ambient, becasue they think it works against oil in the air filter with closed crank case ventilation) which indeed can run from an opening under the transmission cover connected to the crank case sump, from the factory originally separated from the transmission cavity (and ambient) by the cover rubber seal. On the CVO-121 engine, H-D even now themselves use this crankcase venting through the transmisson cover running with a rubber hose routing to the inlet manifold (still closed crank case ventilation, but possibly with less oil content when taken from this transmission cover location). The MY19 oil pump already has a modification with an O-ring on the pump cover, preventing pump suction air leakage, enabling better pump suction vacuum. The MY20 and later pump is even better in emptying the sump by optimizing the two parallel suction ports (from sump and from cam chain cavity) against the oil sumping risk.

Put the battery on a battery tender the night before you go riding. Should give you more ooomph at start up. Lithium FEO4 batteries don't do well in the cold, in the event you are running a Lithium battery. Stick to AGM's if you have cold weather startups.

Hey brother, I got a question. I just bought my first harley a year ago a 23 roadglide special. Now I just picked up a 96 electraglide with evo motor. It has a carb on it. I wanna get a mikuni, but I don't know much about these motors, and I am no mechanic. My question is, what would I need for mods to get some good power remembering I got stock cases?? I don't want to spend thousands of dollars, but I will get what u recommend. I saw your video about the 83cu big bore kit. I got a 2-1 pipe and want the mikuni. What else would u recommend?? Any advise u got would be much appreciated. I'm thinking going 10:5:1 with the forged pistons and andrews ev 23 or 27 cam so what other components have u seen to get about 100hp and 100 tq
@GixxerFoo8 ай бұрын
With an Evo Electra, I would put you a good free flowing exhaust (if it doesn't already have one). Put you an Andrews EV27 cam in there with a new set of lifters (they love to eat lifters around 40K). Get that carb jetted and dialed in, it will be whole new bike. They tend to make about 75 horse and 80-85 torque like that. Doesn't sound like much but they are so fun to ride you'll swear it's putting out more than what it really is.

I really love my Evo Electra Glide Classic, but if I was going to go to a Milwaukee 8, I would go with a low mile 2017-2019 with a 107 and do a Fuel Moto 124 kit with a Wood 22XE cam and ported heads and a new tune. There would be nothing you couldn't do on that bike.

Those are solid, they have the new style oil pump and they have the oil carryover from the transmission to the primary issue solved. I am still a strong supporter of the vented dip stick and trans cover on all M8 engines though.

Other that more than .005" crank run out, such that you have to run a chain drive cam, instead of gear driven, no. Practice some mechanical sympathy, and it should last you a long, long time. Hammer on it, and shit's gonna break, sooner, rather than later. Your breakout is a cruiser..... ride it like a cruiser. Ride the torque, not the HP on the motor.

Really on the fence about the Milwaukee 8. I hate all the electronics , traction control cornering control it’s way too much. I have a 2012 King 103 twin cam. I think the fit is better on that than the new ones full exhaust tuner and I have 79 hp and 115 foot pounds of torque just as good as Milwaukee 8. Oh, also fax tuner, which is best on the market completely replaces the brain in the bike

I have 40,000 km's on my 22 Heritage. 100% stock. Runs perfect. It never losses oil between my 8k oil changes. I'm also getting better than published fuel economy if I'm on the back roads. 4.4 liters /100km's, 53 mpg. Better than my 1200 Sportster. Tonnes of low end. So easy to brake that back wheel loose with a bit of throttle in first gear. Gets up to 160k so effortlessly.

That’s because you didn’t do these silly “upgrades “ that most guys do just for bragging rights. Keeping your bike stock or Stage 1 is the way to go. I did Pipes only & ride the balls off of it with no issues at all. All these guys have issues cause they can’t stop doing dumb shit to their bikes. These bikes have plenty of torque & power for street riding, stay safe out there!
@feloniousmonk3049 Жыл бұрын
The best thing you can do is leave your bike 100% stock. It will last a long, long time that way, probably 100k miles or more, if you don't abuse it, show some mechanical sympathy when the motor is cold, and service it by the book, every 8000 km with full synthetic 20w-50 in the crank and primary and gear box with gear oil as suggested in your owners manual. 3 hole oil is a joke, use proper oils in the gearbox and primary / clutch areas, not motor oil.

I own a 2020 FLTRX and i bought it brand new. I am 1st owner. the M8 has been junk from day one. From metal shavings in the crankcase, to transmittion problems to severely under powered, little to no torque, and i have 18k miles on it, and it needed to be completely overhauled around mile 1k. That is my 2nd harley davidson i have owned, and i will never buy another one.

To me, sumping feels like running from the beach to the lake, you get in deep enough and you're working a lot harder but moving a lot slower
@GixxerFoo9 ай бұрын
That's basically exactly what it is, that sump slowly takes on oil and leaves the crank treading through the liquid.

You missed the simple fix for the tranny fluid crossover, a oversize diameter clutch actuating rod. (several makers out there, I use the shouldered ant not tapered style) Under a 100 bucks in most cases. done many, and so far it's the most efficient fix.
